301. Reserve<br />
a. Combat forces should be held out as a reserve only when adequate<br />
forces have been allocated to the maneuvering force <strong>and</strong><br />
the base of fire. The reserve, if designated, may be employed<br />
initially to reinforce the base of fire or to provide security. As<br />
the attack progresses, the reserve is used to exploit the success<br />
of the maneuvering force.<br />
b. When sufficient forces are not available to constitute a reserve,<br />
the squadron comm<strong>and</strong>er must use other measures to influence<br />
the action, such as providing depth to his formation, maneuvering<br />
his supporting fires, <strong>and</strong> making full use of the unit's<br />
mobility.<br />
302. General<br />
Section II. PREPARATION FOR ATTACK<br />
In order to accomplish offensive missions quickly <strong>and</strong> effectively,<br />
the armored cavalry squadron attacks with aggressiveness,<br />
speed, <strong>and</strong> violence. The conduct of such attacks requires thorough<br />
<strong>and</strong> deliberate planning. In planning for a squadron attack,<br />
the comm<strong>and</strong>er must consider how he can best use the terrain<br />
over which the squadron will operate, <strong>and</strong> the troops <strong>and</strong> fire support<br />
available. His plan must be practical <strong>and</strong> capable of rapid<br />
<strong>and</strong> forceful execution.<br />
303. Plan of Attack<br />
Upon receipt of-the plan of attack, or operation order, from<br />
higher headquarters, the squadron comm<strong>and</strong>er begins to formulate<br />
his plan of attack. The plan of attack includes the plan of<br />
maneuver <strong>and</strong> fire support plan.<br />
304. Control Measures<br />
a. In order to maintain control of his squadron during the attack,<br />
the squadron comm<strong>and</strong>er uses only such control measures<br />
listed below as may be required:<br />
(1) Assembly areas.<br />
(2) Attack positions.<br />
(3) Objectives.<br />
(4) Lines of departure.<br />
(5) Time of attack.<br />
(6) Axes of routes of advance.<br />
(7) Boundary lines.<br />
