b. When a tank unit is attached to the squadron, it is preferable<br />

to employ it as a unit under control of the squadron comm<strong>and</strong>er;<br />

however, when required, tanks may be attached to armored cavalry<br />

troops.<br />

c. If both tanks <strong>and</strong> infantry are attached at the same time,<br />

consideration should be given to employing them as a tank-infantry<br />

team.<br />

256. Engineer Support<br />

Engineers may be attached to the squadron to perform demolition<br />

functions, to assist in the crossing or clearing of obstacles,<br />

<strong>and</strong> to perform road maintenance, in order to facilitate movement<br />

of the squadron. Attached engineers are held under squadron control<br />

or placed in support of one or more of the troops, as required<br />

by the situation. Engineer reconnaissance teams may be attached<br />

to the squadron for the purpose of gathering technical information<br />

of roads, bridges, <strong>and</strong> obstacles. These teams may be further<br />

attached to the armored cavalry troops.<br />

257. Army Aviation Support<br />

a. Army aviation support is provided by the division aviation<br />

company (<strong>FM</strong> 1-5 <strong>and</strong> <strong>FM</strong> 1-100). Aviation staff assistance <strong>and</strong><br />

advice are offered to the squadron comm<strong>and</strong>er by the combat support<br />

section leader or a designated aviator. Reconnaissance helicopters<br />

<strong>and</strong> light observation aircraft are used by the squadron<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er, the staff, <strong>and</strong> troop comm<strong>and</strong>ers for observation,<br />

reconnaissance, <strong>and</strong> control. Transport helicopters are available<br />

to the squadron comm<strong>and</strong>er from the division aviation company<br />

on a specific-mission basis. These helicopters are used to transport<br />

scouts (including 1/i-ton trucks) <strong>and</strong> riflemen on combat or<br />

reconnaissance missions <strong>and</strong> for air movement of supplies.<br />

b. The aerial surveillance platoon of the division aviation company,<br />

consisting of a platoon headquarters, visual <strong>and</strong> photo section,<br />

aerial radar section, drone section, <strong>and</strong> two tracking <strong>and</strong><br />

plotting radar teams, may be employed in a general support role<br />

for the division, or it may be placed in support of a specific unit.<br />

It is normally employed under operational control of the armored<br />

cavalry squadron during combat operations. This platoon assists<br />

the squadron comm<strong>and</strong>er in the accomplishment of his assigned<br />

mission by performing:<br />

(1) Day <strong>and</strong> night photography.<br />

(2) Visual reconnaissance.<br />

(3) Aerial electronic surveillance.<br />
