GENERAL<br />

Section I. GENERAL<br />

Part five is a guide for the employment of the armored division<br />

cavalry squadron <strong>and</strong> the infantry division cavalry squadron. This<br />

portion of the manual covers organization, organization for combat,<br />

general employment, <strong>and</strong> offensive, defensive retrograde, reconnaissance,<br />

<strong>and</strong> security operations for the divisional cavalry squadrons.<br />

The armored cavalry squadron of the armored cavalry regiment<br />

is discussed in <strong>FM</strong> <strong>17</strong>-95.<br />

233. Types of <strong>Armored</strong> <strong>Cavalry</strong> <strong>Squadron</strong>s<br />

The armored division cavalry squadron consists of a headquarters<br />

<strong>and</strong> headquarters troop <strong>and</strong> four armored cavalry troops;<br />

the infantry division cavalry squadron consists of a headquarters<br />

<strong>and</strong> headquarters troop <strong>and</strong> three armored cavalry troops. The<br />

organizational structure of the armored cavalry troop in both squadrons<br />

is the same. There are some minor organizational differences<br />

in the headquarters <strong>and</strong> headquarters troop of each of the<br />

two squadrons.<br />

234. Missions <strong>and</strong> Capabilities<br />

a. The armored cavalry squadron performs three types of missions:<br />

reconnaissance, security, <strong>and</strong> economy of force. The squadron<br />

is organized, equipped, <strong>and</strong> trained to engage in offensive<br />

<strong>and</strong> defensive combat or in retrograde operations in the execution<br />

of these missions. The types of missions performed by the squadron<br />

are the same regardless of whether the squadron is organic to<br />

the armored division or to the infantry division.<br />

b. The armored cavalry squadron is capable of performing the<br />

following missions:<br />
