Harpas Four<br />

Here is a riddle for you: Wh<strong>at</strong> do you call sixty-four<br />

strings, eight tapping feet, and four bows? The<br />

answer is: “Harpas Four!” So you may be asking,<br />

wh<strong>at</strong> is Harpas Four? It’s four nyckelharpa players having fun<br />

making music toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> New England Folk Festival!<br />

For <strong>the</strong> second year in a row, M<strong>at</strong>t Fichtenbaum, Bruce<br />

Sagen, Lydia Ievins, and myself joined ranks <strong>at</strong> NEFFA to<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>e a musical experience one doesn’t often come across.<br />

Most people I meet have never even heard of a nyckelharpa,<br />

much less seen one played. So to hear <strong>the</strong> unique interplay<br />

of four nyckelharpas collabor<strong>at</strong>ing is really quite a tre<strong>at</strong>! Last<br />

year <strong>the</strong> turnout to this event was so good th<strong>at</strong> our audience<br />

exceeded <strong>the</strong> room capacity and <strong>the</strong> staff had to turn many<br />

away. This year was no exception, as once again curious individuals<br />

crowded around us, eager to ask questions, listen<br />

and learn about our instruments.<br />

I was asked by an audience member, “how often do you<br />

play toge<strong>the</strong>r”? Well, “once a year <strong>at</strong> this festival,” was my<br />

reply. Our performance was pretty much like an informal<br />

get-toge<strong>the</strong>r, where we shared our enjoyment and love for<br />

Swedish music. We had no particular tunes planned, in fact,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was no plan <strong>at</strong> all except to have a good time. Each of<br />

us took turns picking tunes th<strong>at</strong> are generally well known<br />

nyckelharpa tunes. From <strong>the</strong>re we just let <strong>the</strong> music emerge.<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> I find to be so special about this event is th<strong>at</strong>,<br />

although we only play toge<strong>the</strong>r once a year, our sounds are<br />

able to join toge<strong>the</strong>r as if <strong>the</strong>y had always been th<strong>at</strong> way. As<br />

you know, no two nyckelharpas are exactly alike, and I think<br />

<strong>the</strong> same is true of nyckelharpists. Each of us has an individual<br />

style, and while we may all be <strong>playing</strong> <strong>the</strong> same tune,<br />

we each interpret it slightly differently. It is those combined<br />

interpret<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong> run like rain drops, joining toge<strong>the</strong>r and<br />

splitting apart as <strong>the</strong>y please. Our melodies and harmonies<br />

flowed in and out of one ano<strong>the</strong>r, as if we had planned it all<br />

along. This magical, improvis<strong>at</strong>ional aspect of <strong>the</strong> way nyckelharpa<br />

music is cre<strong>at</strong>ed is one of <strong>the</strong> things th<strong>at</strong> has always<br />

drawn me to <strong>the</strong> instrument.<br />

If you have only played nyckelharpa on your own, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

you have a giant hole in your nyckelharpa experience th<strong>at</strong><br />

desper<strong>at</strong>ely needs to be filled! So stop being a closet nyckelharpist,<br />

and reach out and find o<strong>the</strong>r nyckelharpa players<br />

th<strong>at</strong> you can team up with (check <strong>the</strong> ANA roster). I know<br />

its not always easy, but even if it is only once a year <strong>at</strong> a festival<br />

or ANA ga<strong>the</strong>ring, it will add a whole new dimension to<br />

your <strong>playing</strong>. I promise you, it is truly worthwhile. Why not<br />

make your own Harpas Four? Or maybe more! ■<br />
