9.17.4 At the western end of the south side of Clay Street, No.3a is the sole<br />

remainder of a group of 19 th century workshops. Across the entrance to<br />

Ennion Close, is the Library, formerly an infant school. It is of a similar,<br />

but plainer (and altered), construction to the other former school further<br />

east along the street. The former Church of England School and<br />

School House are unashamedly Gothic in their detailing and form an<br />

attractive incident in the street scene. Both former schools have low<br />

flint boundary walls.<br />

9.17.5 Clay Street is the link between the main village and the mills sub-area,<br />

and as a result the street has a very different character at its western<br />

end. It is entirely residential and is of a much lower density with grass<br />

verges creating a much more rural fee. Views of the, now redundant,<br />

Lion Mills complex also begin to dominate the skyline.<br />

plastered; limited use of flint.<br />

Roof Materials Slate, clay pantiles and plain tiles, some concrete tiles<br />

Windows/Doors Mixture of sliding sashes, timber casements and PVCu.<br />

Scale 1.5 – 2 storey<br />

Features Fanlights, Classical door surrounds, red brick detailing<br />

and chimneystacks.<br />

9.18 Mill Corner<br />

9.18.1 Mill Corner, as its name suggests is a small, now predominantly<br />

residential, area centred around the mill complex on the western,<br />
