Laticiferous systems (lactifers) are found in the poppy family, in the rubber trees (Para rubber tree and Castilla elastica), and in the Cichorieae with Dandelion, lettuce, hawkweed and salsify; also present in milkweeds & spurges Lactifers Latex = milky sap of many plants that coagulates on exposure to air. A complex emulsion in which proteins, alkaloids, starchs, sugars, oils, tannins, resins and gums are found. In most plants, latex is white, but some have yellow, orange, or scarlet latex.
Lactifers – pipelines for defense and wound healing Opium for illegal use is often converted into heroin, which is less bulky to smuggle & has a potency of twice that of morphine. Heroin can be taken by intravenous injection, intranasally, smoked and inhaled. Semen papaveri or poppy seeds contain a lot of oil but little morphine.
