Glycosides for temporary detoxification
Aglycoside is a molecule in which (1) a sugar is
bound to (2) a non-carbohydrate moiety: some
other organic molecule. The sugar group is then
known as (1) the glycone and the non-sugar
group as (2) the aglycone or genin part of the
glycoside.
Plants store chemicals including toxins in the
form of inactive glycosides. These can be
activated by hydrolysis, which causes the sugar
part to break off, making the chemical ready to
act. Also in animals and humans, poisons are
often bound to sugar molecules as part of their
detoxification.
