Annual Report
Center for Puppetry Arts

2
Dear Friends and Supporters,
The 2004-05 season proved to be very busy! We presented 769 performances of ten family
productions and 52 performances of seven New Directions Series (adult) productions.
Education instructors taught over 650 workshops, and museum staff conducted over 250
tours.
Avanti, Da Vinci! The Secret Adventures of Leonardo da Vinci by Associate Artistic Director Jon
Ludwig and Resident Puppet Designer Jason Hines, had its world premiere here at the Center
in August. Critics and audiences alike loved the farcical look at the Renaissance man. Wendell
Brock, theater critic for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, cited it as one of the best works he’d
seen in his three years of reviewing Atlanta theater. In September, the production traveled
to the Slovak Republic for Festival Bábkarska Bystrica, or the International Festival of Slovak
Puppet Theatres.
Jane Fonda was the honored guest at the 2004 String Fling Gala. She auctioned off three
of her cookbooks for $5,000. The annual fundraiser raised almost $125,000 to support
education programs.
In November 2004, the Center was awarded the prestigious George Goodwin Community
Grant for 2005-2006 by Manning Selvage & Lee/Atlanta (MS&L), a leading public relations
firm. We are thrilled to have them on board to expand our public relations efforts.
In December, we released three Center productions on DVD – American Tall Tales, Beauty
& the Beast and Dinosaurs. Creative Digital Group donated two years of video production
services to capture the productions on film so they could be enjoyed for years to come. In
March 2005, we learned that American Tall Tales had won a Telly Award – an annual prestigious
competition.
- continued on next page

Also in March, the Center launched its online Museum Store, where patrons from all over
the world can purchase the DVDs, puppets and related items. Thanks to Macquarium and
TechBridge for their pro bono assistance.
In April 2005, we announced the establishment of our third endowment, the Barbara and
Bill Wylly Executive Director Endowment, created in honor of the Wylly’s long and very
influential association with the Center.
We are also pleased to announce that this season we completed the requirements for the
Ford Foundation Challenge Grant. We were one of 28 arts organizations across the country
to benefit from their New Directions/New Donors for the Arts Initiative, awarded in 2000.
The final report from this grant is included.
We gratefully acknowledge the individuals, corporations, foundations and government
organizations who supported us this season. This support allows us to maintain an active
Atlanta treasure – one that the whole community can learn from and enjoy.
I hope you enjoy reading the following report, which covers July 1, 2004 – June 30, 2005.
Sincerely,
Vincent Anthony
Barbara and Bill Wylly Executive Director
About the Center for
Puppetry Arts
The Center for Puppetry Arts is the nation’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to
the art form of puppetry and focuses on three areas: performance, education and museum.
Each year the Center for Puppetry Arts brings quality family programming to Atlanta as part
of the Family Series, a collection of adapted classic stories and new works performed in a
variety of puppetry styles by the Center company. National traveling puppetry troupes set
up shop at the Center during SummerFest for families, while teen and adult-oriented shows
by Atlanta artists and visiting companies comprise the New Directions Series.
In addition to presenting riveting productions, the Center also holds two museum spaces and
offers a variety of classes and workshops for adults and children alike. Puppets: The Power of
Wonder is an inviting, interactive museum, which provides hands-on educational fun with over
350 puppets from around the world. Additional puppets and objects are on display in special
exhibits throughout the building.
Create-A-Puppet workshops, offered in conjunction with Family Series performances,
encourage children to build a puppet of their own that is related to the show. Adults can learn
more about different aspects of puppetry in the Adult Education Series. And the Distance
Learning program reaches students across the U.S. with a virtual field trip experience.
All activities presented at the Center are educational – programming meets curriculum
standards in Language Arts, Fine Arts and Character Education, among others.

Performance
See a show. Make a puppet. Tour the museum. All activities at the Center work
together for a comprehensive learning experience. Most family productions during
the 2004-05 season were based on beloved, classic works of literature, and the New
Directions Series continued to present original works for adult audiences.
Puppet Theater Camp
Puppet Theater Camp continues to inspire a new generation of would-be puppeteers! In August 2004, seven
students ages 13-15 participated in Session III of the Center’s Puppet Theater Camp summer program for teens.
Five of the seven students attended Puppet Theater Camp as an extension of their course of study in the City of
Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs ArtsCool Program. The students met every day for two weeks to produce an
original work which they performed for family and friends on the last day of the session onstage in the Center’s
Hippie Hip Hooray.
Distance Learning
The Center’s unique Distance Learning Program, which provides a dynamic, interactive virtual field trip experience,
continued to present arts-infused programming to students across the United States. During the 2004-05 season,
the studio presented 511 programs on traditional classroom disciplines, including units on butterflies, spiders,
dinosaurs, the rainforest, Native Americans, Africa and more. Students participated in a learning activity about
the topic and created a working puppet.
Since 1998, the Distance Learning Program has reached primarily rural and underserved audiences that are
unable to visit the Center for hands-on educational programs. For most programs, the Center provided a
comprehensive study guide and list of puppet materials – all of which are easy-to-find, typically recycled materials
that are of little, if any, cost.
Receives New Equipment
In February, the Distance Learning Program received a donation of new equipment from TANDBERG, an
international leader in videoconferencing technology. This donation allowed the Center to establish its own
direct connect studio that uses two different technologies – IP (Internet) or ISDN (phone lines). The state-ofthe-art
equipment allows the studio to connect to more states and school systems, at a reduced cost for both
the Center and the schools.
Museum
The Center’s museum and special exhibits present puppets from various time periods and countries around
the world. Exhibitions of puppets are considered essential to enhance understanding and appreciation of
performances. The Center also encourages visitors to find a treasure in our collection that correlates with the
current family show.
PUPPETS: The Power of Wonder
The Center’s permanent exhibit, PUPPETS: The Power of Wonder, is a hands-on museum displaying more than 350
puppets from various time periods and countries around the world. Self-guided and docent-led tours reinforce
the breadth and scope of puppetry through the ages. Curated by Dr. Michael Malkin, Professor of Theatre,
California Polytechnic State University.
Special Exhibits
In addition to the permanent exhibit, the Center has several special exhibits throughout the building.
PUPPETRY IN FOCUS: Treasures from our Global Collection
Puppetry fulfills a vital role in communities around the world. This exhibit, drawing from recent acquisitions
and never-before-seen pieces in the Center’s permanent collection, illuminated those roles. The more than
50 puppets on display included puppets from countries as diverse as Mali, Egypt, India, Japan, Russia, Indonesia,
Mexico, the Czech Republic and others. Co-curated by Susan Kinney and Bradford Clark.
1996 REVISITED: Puppets of Olympic Proportions
Atlanta was proud to host the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996. Izzy, the Centennial Olympic mascot, returned
for a visit along with Peter Minshall’s statuesque Belle and Gent, who danced at the Opening Ceremonies.
Olympics pin and memorabilia were also on display.
POSTERS INTERNATIONAL: A Puppet Perspective
Uniting diverse images from around the globe, this exhibit includes a wide array of cartoonish, romantic, subtle
and daring posters. Each of these placards, which advertise productions and festivals from UNIMA (Union
Internationale de la Marionnette) Centers, reflects the unique culture of the countries they represent – from the
Czech Republic to Italy to Argentina.
KINGS OF BROADWAY
Featured in this exhibit were two of the mask prototypes from the Broadway smash-hit, The Lion King, for the lion
brothers themselves, Mufasa and Scar. Donated by Julie Taymor.
DECODING DA VINCI
This special exhibit showed a rare glimpse into the production process. It featured scenic models, molds,
preliminary sketches and photographs from Avanti, Da Vinci!

Off-site Exhibits
Along with the exhibits on-site at the Center, puppets from the museum collection are on display in several
locations throughout the city.
Atlantix, Underground Atlanta
Underground Atlanta, a historic retail and entertainment Center in downtown, is also home to an AtlanTix, a halfprice
ticket booth run by the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts. Visitors to Underground and the booth can
view several of the Center’s puppets, including Don Quixote, his sword and horse, and a Gent from the Opening
Ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics.
WSB-TV, Atlanta
On September 29, 1948, WSB-TV went on the air. Among the programs viewers watched that night was a
children’s television show, Woody Willow & Friends, with marionettes manipulated by Don and Ruth Gilpin. In
1983, the Gilpins donated puppets and memorabilia from the show to the Center’s permanent collection. Today,
some of those puppets, including a dapper Fox, are on display at the station.
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport,
Atlanta
Weary travelers entering or exiting the airport’s
International Terminal can view several cases of puppets
from the Center’s permanent collection, representing
several countries including Indonesia, China, Germany and
Egypt.
Library
The Center’s Research Library is full of resources on the
art of puppetry, including books and videos from around
the world – many of which are not carried at regular
libraries. Although some patrons just browse or watch a
video for fun, the majority of patrons use the library for
specific research.
For instance, one high school student did research for a
homework project on Chinese shadows, while another
studied Japanese Bunraku. Professors used the library to
work on lesson plans. Aspiring puppeteers used the library
to learn more about the craft.
Season Highlights
Center DVDs Debut in December
You love all the shows at the Center, but you’re not able to attend every single one. Then, when you do attend a
show, you wish you could watch it over and over! Thanks to Creative Digital Group and Freebairn & Co., three
of the Center’s productions were released on DVD in December 2004!
American Tall Tales, Beauty & the Beast and Dinosaurs are the first three titles in the Center’s PUPPETS AT PLAY series.
Each DVD is a complete package of engaging entertainment suitable for the entire family. Widestage, Special Gold
Editions bring together the delightful tunes, friendly puppets and imaginative fun that audiences find only at the
Center.
In addition to the performance, each digitally mastered DVD includes behind-the-scenes secrets for the show
(each a little over three minutes long) and a five-minute Center overview.
Atlanta-based advertising agency Freebairn & Co. designed all of the DVD packaging pro bono.
Another Atlanta-based company, Creative Digital Group, donated two years of video production services. Each
Center show was shot using a three-camera setup, capturing multiple angels of the live performances. In addition,
extensive color and video level correction was used in order to offset the dramatic changes in lighting used in
the theater.
Creative Digital Group began filming in 2002 with a three-camera shoot of Jon Ludwig’s musical whodunit,
The Body Detective. Subsequent filmings of American Tall Tales, Beauty & The Beast, Dinosaurs, The Plant Doctors,
The Reluctant Dragon, The Shoemaker & the Elves, Tales of Edgar Allan Poe, The Velveteen Rabbit and Weather Rocks!
completed the PUPPETS AT PLAY collection. Release dates for the remaining seven DVDs are to be determined.
Center inks distribution deal with Quality Books
In March 2005, the Center announced a partnership with Quality Books, Inc., to distribute its DVD series,
PUPPETS AT PLAY. Quality Books will market and distribute the titles to libraries nationwide.
Quality Books works with approximately 9,000 public, school, academic, corporate and special libraries across
the country to distribute a diverse mix of books and multimedia programs, specifically developed by small
publishers, that are not readily available from other sources.
“The Center’s PUPPETS AT PLAY DVD series fits our strict criteria for distribution,” said Wendy Steck, public
relations manager, Quality Books. “We look for products that are unique and entertaining and the Center’s
DVD series fits that description while also adding an educational element that adds to its appeal to the library
audience.”
American Tall Tales ropes in a Telly
Also in March, the American Tall Tales DVD was recognized with a 26th Annual Telly Award.
Founded in 1978, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional and cable
TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions. The Telly Awards annually
showcases the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations,
cable operators and corporate video departments in the world. The Telly Awards is a widely known and highly
respected national and international competition and receives over 10,000 entries annually from all 50 states
and many foreign countries.
Center Announces Endowment for Executive Director
In April 2005, the Center announced the establishment of its third endowment, the Barbara and Bill Wylly
Executive Director Endowment. The endowment will help fund the executive director position.
The Center’s board, led by chairman John Chandler, Kip Caffey, Mrs. U. Bertram Ellis, Jr., and Mrs. C. Preston
Stephens, created the endowment in honor of the Wyllys’ long and very influential association with the Center.
Mrs. Wylly served as chairman of the Center’s board of directors for 14 years, beginning in 1989. She was involved
in four capital campaigns that secured funding to purchase the Center’s building, an acre of property adjacent to
the Center and to make millions of dollars in improvements in the Center. Mr. Wylly was also active in the Center,
serving as a volunteer and offering support to the Center until his death in 1995.
Chandler made the surprise announcement at the Chairman’s Benefactors Reception on April 21, 2005 and
presented Mrs. Wylly with a black, wooden desk chair inscribed “Barbara and Bill Wylly Executive Director Chair
2005.” Former Atlanta Braves player Henry “Hank” Aaron and The Coca-Cola Company’s chairman of the board
and chief executive officer E. Neville Isdell were on hand for the reception and presentation.
Avanti, Da Vinci! Tours to Slovakia
In September 2004, Avanti, Da Vinci! The Secret Adventures of Leonardo da Vinci traveled to the Slovak Republic for
Festival Bábkarska Bystrica, or the International Festival of Slovak Puppet Theatres. Associate Artistic Director
Jon Ludwig and Resident Puppet Designer Jason von Hinezmeyer, who wrote and directed the melodramatic
farce, also gave a presentation about the Center and contemporary puppetry in America. This was a major honor
and a testament to the Center’s global renown among the puppetry community. The trip was supported in
part by CEC ArtsLink, the Fund for U. S. Artists at International Festivals and Exhibitions, and Trust for Mutual
Understanding.
Bobby Box Travels to Amsterdam for Research for Anne Frank: Within & Without
While visiting Europe three years ago, Associate Producer Bobby Box stopped at both the historic Frank home
and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which at the time was featuring an exhibition of ornate dollhouses. This
visit, along with a quotation by Anne Frank he read in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, gave Box the inspiration for
a work based on her life.
In June 2005, Bobby Box made a return trip to Amsterdam to conduct more research into Anne’s life for his
January 2006 show Anne Frank: Within & Without.
With the help of some Dutch puppeteers, Box was able to track down and visit the apartment where Anne
and her family lived before the war, the family’s community center, her playground, her school, and even her
sister’s school, giving him a greater sense of purpose and inspiration to depict Anne’s story with justice and
authenticity.
Box also made several visits to the Secret Annex where Anne and her family hid from the Nazis. He then
followed Anne’s path beyond the Secret Annex, visiting the theater from which she and so many others were sent
to various concentration camps.
After the trip, Box said he came back with numerous ideas to incorporate into the show, but he also wanted to
keep the original focus.
“The reason that I went was to experience the physical world of Anne Frank,” he said. “As the show is largely
about her ‘internal’ world, I needed to experience the ‘external’ world that shaped it.”
Jon Ludwig nominated for an Emmy®
Jon Ludwig, Associate Artistic Director at the Center for Puppetry Arts, along with Mitchell Kreigman and Dean
Gordon, received a nomination from The National Television Academy’s 32nd annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
The nomination, for Outstanding Directing in a Children’s Series, was for Disney Channel’s The Book of Pooh. The
directors were recognized for the episode “The Great Honey Pot/Paging Piglet,” which premiered on April 8,
2004.
Disney Channel premiered The Book of Pooh in January 2001. Inspired by the literary creations of author A. A.
Milne and the creative mind of Emmy Award® winner Mitchell Kriegman, The Book of Pooh is the first television
program to combine the 300 year-old art of Japanese Bunraku puppetry with newly developed, computer
generated “virtual sets.”
The Daytime Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievement in all fields of daytime television production.
Bobby Box Receives Grant from Jim Henson Foundation
The Jim Henson Foundation awarded a 2004 Seed Grant to Bobby Box, associate producer at the Center for
Puppetry Arts, for his upcoming project, Anne Frank: Within & Without. Created in cooperation with the Georgia
Commission on the Holocaust and the Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945 exhibit, under the auspices of the
Anne Frank Cener USA, Anne Frank: Within & Without will premiere at the Center in January 2006.
The Jim Henson Foundation was established in 1982 by Muppets creator Jim Henson to promote and develop
the art of puppetry in the United States. Each year the Foundation introduces thousands of adults and families
to the magic of puppet theater through grantmaking, artist advocacy and public awareness efforts, and other
outreach activities. The Foundation awards grants each year for the creation and development of innovative
works of puppet theater. Project grants of $5,000 are awarded for the development of new works, and seed
grants of $2,000 are made for pieces in the earliest stages of creation.
Center featured on The WB’s Blue Collar TV
On Wednesday, January 26, 2005, it got rowdy at the Center for Puppetry Arts when the Blue Collar TV crew
invaded! Marketing Director Debbie George and Education Director Alan Louis greeted Jeff Foxworthy, Bill
Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy in front of the museum (and under Pinocchio’s legs). The three stars showed up
with a boat-load of equipment and crew members to “get in touch with their inner child.” They then participated
in a Create-A-Puppet Workshop, and brought smiles to the faces of about 20 kids that got to play hooky.
Everyone made Creepy Crawly Spider Rod Puppets in a special workshop, taught by Louis. He claimed the three
guests “disrupted the class,” and even made them sit in time out! Don’t worry - the kids learned something too
- Louis taught them all about spiders before the festivities began.
Jason Hines, Resident Puppet Designer, and cohorts David Stephens and April Moon Carlson secretly worked in
the puppet-making shop to create doppelganger puppets for each of the Blue Collar comedians. Hines and Jon
Ludwig, Associate Artistic Director, surprised the guys with their mini-clones after the workshop, and encouraged
them to put on a puppet show of their own.
The whole affair was filmed as a spot for the season finale episode of the Blue Collar TV show on The WB, and
aired on May 19, 2005.
Online Ticket Sales
Online ticket sales continued to increase in the second year. During the 2004-05 season, 4,614 tickets were
purchased online, an increase of 38.5 percent over the previous year. This represented over $65,000 in net
revenues. The percentage of new patrons purchasing tickets online remained about the same as the previous
season – 77 percent of patrons buying online had never been to the Center before.
Center Awarded George Goodwin Community Grant
In November 2004, the Center was awarded the prestigious George Goodwin Community Grant for 2005-2006
by Manning Selvage & Lee/Atlanta (MS&L), a leading public relations firm. The Center will receive $100,000 of
public relations and marketing communications professional services during the two-year grant period.
“The Center for Puppetry Arts has captured the imagination of our city and much of the performing arts
world over the past quarter century,” said Rob Baskin, MS&L/Atlanta’s deputy managing director. “It provides
entertainment, education and enrichment for children and adults and is the premier institution of its kind in
America.”
The George Goodwin Grant program was developed in 1998 to continue the legacy of MS&L/Atlanta founder
George Goodwin, who has given Atlanta more than 50 years of community service. Its purpose is to provide
an Atlanta-based non-profit agency with marketing communications guidance, planning and programs for two
years.
“We are proud that the Center for Puppetry Arts will be our public service client for the next two years,” said
George Goodwin, MS&L/Atlanta’s founder and an active senior counselor with the firm. “The Center has carved
a significant place for itself among Atlanta’s premier attractions that make our city a great place to live, work
and visit.”
MS&L began work with the Center on January 1, 2005. The firm has assisted with procuring media coverage,
as well as working on a comprehensive communications audit.

New Directions/New Donors
for the Arts: Ford Foundation
Challenge Grant Initiative
In 2000, the Center for Puppetry Arts received a challenge grant of $1.25 million from the
Ford Foundation in order to stimulate new support from individual donors. The Center
was one of 28 arts organizations across the country to benefit from the $42.5 million New
Directions/New Donors for the Arts Initiative.
The Center is pleased to announce that thanks to the generosity of the donors listed below,
we were able to complete the requirements of the challenge grant during the 2004-05
season.
Center founder and Executive Director Vincent Anthony said, “The Ford initiative
strengthened our ongoing efforts in developing programs that further the Center’s mission
of being a premiere artistic and cultural asset in Atlanta, the nation and abroad. We
were thrilled to accept this challenge to build a broader partnership with individuals
and business leaders in the community. The Center for Puppetry Arts is excited we were
a part of developing a new model for arts organizations in the 21 st century.”
The New Directions/New Donors for the Arts Initiative built on the Ford Foundation’s
decades-long commitment to strengthening arts and cultural organizations in America. Based
on a national study of over 200 arts organizations, the Ford Foundation selected the Center
for Puppetry Arts and 27 other cultural institutions representing the variety and scope
of imaginative work taking place across the arts disciplines throughout the country. Each
institution was seen as shaping thinking about new practices in its field by forging innovative
artistic programs, developing stronger financial management structures and cultivating strong
connections to the public. Additionally, the Ford Foundation only selected financially healthy
institutions that were capable of meeting the responsibilities of the challenge grants.
The Ford Foundation, established in 1936, is a private, nonprofit institution that serves as
a resource for innovative people and institutions worldwide. Its goals are to strengthen
democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and
advance human achievement. A national and international philanthropy with assets of more
than $13 billion, the Foundation has provided more than $10 billion in grants and loans
worldwide. The Ford Foundation maintains headquarters in New York, offices in countries in
Africa and the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and an office in Russia.
Many thanks to all of the individuals and foundations who donated to the Center for the
Ford Foundation Initiative!
