COMMODORE'S MESSAGE
This report marks the end of an extremely successful
season for the club both on and off the water.
The activities and achievements of the club as a body
and of individuals have been covered adequately in the
Annual Report, the various Class Reports and the
Financial Statements, however, I would be remiss if I did
not make mention of the fantastic results achieved by
Andrew and Alison Chapman, winning the Flying Eleven
State Title and finishing third overall in the Nationals.
Congratulations Alison and Andrew. The last time that
Lane Cove won the Flying Elevens State Title was in
1985/6 when another sibling combination, Justin & Ilya
Connell, took out the honours. Let’s hope we don’t have
to wait as long for the next win.
Before the Annual General Meeting a number of
members said to me that they would give me all the
support I needed in this role and I am pleased to say they
have all kept their word, so much so that I feel a little
guilty.
Thank you to all the class secretaries, the starters and
finishers, the rescue boat crews and those who
performed the essential task of Officer of the Day. This
task has been traditionally shared amongst the
committee with assistance from one or two extra club
members. It would be nice to see the volunteer base
extended so that perhaps in the future it will only be
necessary to officiate (slog your guts out) once a season.
Let me know if you are willing to help out.
I would also like to thank each and every member of the
committee. In these times, where for some reason we all
have a lot less time, it is heartening to see a dedicated
team pitch in to keep the wheels turning and keep your
club moving forward. I didn’t want to mention names
(as you may have noticed) but, in particular, I must
acknowledge the contribution of Rolf Lunsmann to
administration, sailing and generally good ideas, John
Hayward on administration, maintenance and generally
following up many long and protracted issues, Warwick
Thomson, our on water captain who is just as active with
off water matters and Andrew Glassock for leaving the
club in good shape.
In his report last year Andrew suggested that to remain
viable the club needed to increase its membership base
by about 100. This season saw an overall increase of
37 (15%) from 242 to 279 and already we are seeing a
vastly improved financial result. If we can achieve
Andrew’s goal over the next two seasons then I agree we
will be in a far better position to fund the increasing costs
of maintaining and improving our assets as well as
spreading the burden. I too say “encourage your friends
to get a boat and get down to Lane Cove” and encourage
your spouses, children and/or parents to become
members and enjoy our facilities.
Jack Winning - commodore@lc12ftssc.org.au
ANNUAL REPORT 2003/04
The season just past must have been one of the most
successful and enjoyable for many years. Friendships
amongst both the younger and older age groups
flourished, as did the relationships of all age groups with
one another. Lane Cove continued to build on its
reputation as a true family club.
The club sailing achievements have been covered in the
Class Reports and the winners of Championships,
Pointscores and individual races are listed separately.
Very early in the season, to coincide with the first Friday
of daylight saving, we held a Cocktail Party. We reached
out with invitations, as best we could, not only to current
and recent sailors and parents but to many from past
eras with the result of over 200 in attendance, including
five life members. We were pleased to also have with us
the General Manager of Yachting Australia NSW, Andrew
Hamilton, and Denise Van their Administration Officer.
Andrew was sufficiently inspired by the atmosphere of the
evening and commitment of the members past and
present, to write a letter to “Afloat” magazine which we
proudly reproduced in the club’s newsletter. The
highlight of the evening was of course the recognition of
William (Bill) Edmondson as a Life Member.
Life Membership
The committee may recommend one person who has
rendered special and outstanding service to the Club to
be elected a Life Member by the Annual General
Meeting.
At the 2003 meeting Bill Edmondson, a member since
1955 and Auditor since 1967, was elected to this, the
highest honour the members of this club can bestow on
anyone. Apart from Bill’s major contribution in the
capacity of Auditor, over the years Bill has always been
there doing whatever has been needed to be done and
supporting whoever needed supporting whenever they
needed it. Congratulations Bill and thank you.
Bill Edmondson
Sadly, as we gain one we lose one. Peter Fay who was
born in 1921, passed away on 22 April 2004. Peter had
lived out of Sydney for some 30 years but took the time
on return visits to pop in and have a look at the club that
provided him, in his words, with “the happiest memories
of my sailing years”. Peter was an enthusiastic reader of
our newsletters and when he received the one which
reproduced Andrew Hamilton’s letter, praising the
philosophy of Lane Cove, he was moved to write to us on
19 February, particularly recalling the unforgettable time
he had on the weekend of our 100 th anniversary.
Vale Peter.
Membership
There was a heartening increase in membership this
season which was reflected in increased fee income but
more importantly increased fleet sizes in all classes.
There was a quantum leap in the 12 fleet and a
rejuvenation of the Cherubs, an increase in the Lasers,
Flying Elevens, Sabots and Manly Juniors.
We also welcomed a number of new or lapsed Associate
Members.
Statistics
Life members 10
Senior Members 81
Associate Members 67
Youth Members 121
Total Membership 279
Newsletter
During the season five newsletters plus this Annual
Report have been produced, four were mailed to
members and supporters and the fifth, because of time
sensitivity, was only e-mailed.
As we all become more “on-line”, the club has moved to
build its database of e-mail addresses and currently
sends out over 200 newsletters in this fashion. Next
season it is hoped we will reduce even more the number
sent by snail mail allowing us to improve our
communications, cut costs and give you a full colour
newsletter. Thanks to our newsletter editor, immediate
past commodore Andrew Glassock, for harassing class
secretaries, keeping in touch with what’s happening, and
using his computer skills to keep us informed.
The season’s newsletters are all available on our web
site.
Web Site
During the season our web site was re-vamped by
Jo Clarke. Jo is the only one of her family not sailing; son
and daughter Owen and Mevagh sail in Flying Elevens
whilst husband Alan sails a Laser – perhaps next season
Jo!
If you haven’t had a look recently or at all, have a browse
next time you are in front of your computer, like the rest
of us you’ll be impressed: www.lc12ftssc.org.au
Give us your feedback, if you think there is something we
should or could have up there or should do differently let
us know and we’ll try to do it.
Thanks Jo, much appreciated.
Social
The reporting period commenced with our 2002/3
Presentation Dinner. Again this season we had both
junior and senior presentations on the same evening and
the one event. An early start allowed those with younger
families and/or babysitting commitments to attend the
junior presentation and dinner and still get home at a
reasonable hour. A new innovation, a power-point slide
show prepared by Rolf Lunsmann, was an outstanding
success that encapsulated the season’s many activities
and managed to pull on the heart strings of all present.
The early Season Cocktail Party was a resounding
success and the presentation night slide show with added
historical shots was extremely popular. The club looked
great thanks to our resident interior decorators, Lyn
Francis and Clare Hayward and the night ran without a
hitch due to the planning of a dedicated committee of
Susan Chambers, Tracey Griffin, Clare Morcombe,
Annette Winning, Lyn Francis, Clare Hayward and a few
husbands. The most pleasing part and what made the
evening both a social and financial success was the
teenage sailors who pitched in with serving the food and
where appropriate, the drinks. Thank you Kate Hayward,
Felicity Killoran, Emily Press, James Francis, Patrick
Bodiemeade, Brad Phillips, Lachie Paramor, Heidi
Winning, Alex Chambers, Allison Kenney, Rachael
Massingham, Will Chapman, Andrew Chapman and
David Winning – a truly fine Lane Cove effort.
Culinary rivalry was at an all time high with each class
trying to outdo each other to provide affordable and
enjoyable Championship Dinners. Without doubt all five
were just that.
Canteen
The canteen really hummed this year. Lyn Francis, our
volunteer coordinator, had considerably more support
than for some time and thanks everyone for their time.
The buying was split by product amongst the Griffins, the
Chambers, the Winnings and the Haywards whilst our
Honorary Treasurer, Cathy Lunsmann, kept an overall
eye on the finances and controls and a much improved
profit has reflected both her vigilance and the support of
all. The canteen endeavours to provide good food and
drinks at a reasonable price at the same time providing
the club with another much needed source of income.
The results this season were the best for some years.
Club polo shirts were available this year and although
providing very little profit were popular with the members.
Learn to Sail
The club continued its Learn to Sail programme for 8 to
15 year olds with two courses and a total of 38 students
during the September/October school holidays.
Week one was led by Richard Griffin and week two by
Jack Winning, although Jack unashamedly confesses
allowing Karyn Gojnich to do most of the work. There
was fantastic voluntary help from both the senior and the
junior sailors in the club.
Thank you to all those who gave their time voluntarily to
give back to this fantastic sport a little of what they have
got out of it and give others the opportunity to experience
the pleasures.
Twilight Sailing
Friday evening sailing during daylight saving was enjoyed
by those who participated although the weather was
somewhat unfavourable prior to Christmas. Karen
Gojnich facilitated a juniors’ mini-series primarily to assist
Learn to Sail graduates improve their skills. Although the
weather was most unkind, a reasonable number
participated which helped make the transition to Saturday
sailing a little bit easier.
Socially it was a very civilised way to end the week and a
regular crew enjoyed a barbecue on most occasions.
Secondary Schools’ Sailing Championships (CHS)
The family nature of your club is highlighted each year
when the majority of families with secondary school aged
children make the pilgrimage to Belmont.
The parents mix and the children of all ages mix. It’s just
like one big extended family. This year when the call was
“fish and chips, who’s in for dinner”, 68 men, women and
children all with connections to your club gathered at The
Pines Camp for a very festive evening.
The championship is often, but not always, an opportunity
to sail something different and no-one much cares where
they finish so long as they get to socialise. This year our
only mention at the presentation was Andrew Chapman
sailing with Emma Kerr from Coffs Harbour who finished
second in their class. 152 boats competed in the regatta.
Pick-Up Boats
The club maintained its fleet of the Clyde and four
aluminium runabouts.
Crewed by Rob and
Judy Winning the
Clyde was there
each week to lay
marks and keep an
eye on the senior
fleets as was the
George Eden,
crewed on a more
ad hoc basis, but
with particular
support from Alan
Kenney and Bill
Pendlebury. The
crews in the club
boats were particularly grateful for the support of Richard
Griffin in his Webster Cat whose eye for detail didn’t let
anyone slip outside the net. A sincere thank you Richard
from all the sailors and officials for your support during
the year and making yourself and your boat available for
both patrol and pick-up work during the racing as well as
for the various Flying Eleven training days, interclubs and
even the Nationals in Brisbane.
www.lc12ftssc.org.au 5.

In the river attending to the juniors were the Steve
Kiprioti and the other two tinnies. These were crewed
by a number of willing parents including, but not only,
Bob Paton, Robert Frohlich, Rolf Lunsmann, Ben
Goodman, Chris Winston, David Lee, Phil Hartas, Joe
Bujna, Paul Clune, and Andrew Glassock - who was seen
on a number of days rowing a dinghy around following
the silver fleet.
New motors were purchased for the two smaller
runabouts which gave them a new lease of life and we
successfully trialled a set of Air-o-float stabilisers on one
of these. These inflatable cushions not only give the boat
stability when rescuing but give protection to the craft and
crew being rescued. We have purchased an additional
two sets for next season.
We will also be trialling propeller guards next season.
Race Officials
We are all forever indebted to John Aston and Sue
Cantor who are there week in, week out to start and finish
our races. John and Sue calmly and efficiently perform
their duties with an aura that sets the scene for an
enjoyable afternoon on the water. They were assisted on
a regular basis by Susan Chambers, Lyn Francis and
Eric Cantor.
Club Patron, Australian Female Sailor of the Year and
more….
Your club this year successfully nominated Adrienne
Cahalan for the honour of 2003 Australian Female Sailor
of the Year.
Adriennne started her sailing in Lasers at Lane Cove in
her teens and shortly moved into 12s and then 18s.
Adrienne has sailed in 13 Sydney to Hobart Races, a
Kenwood Cup, 10 World
Championships in
dinghies and yachts,
3 Admiral’s Cup
campaigns, 3 Fastnets,
and 8 Transatlantics.
She has also been
involved in 3 Whitbread-
Volvo campaigns and
several circumnavigation
projects, including 2
Jules Verne Round The
World attempts, the first
as navigator on board Royal & Sun Alliance's 1998
record attempt when they were dismasted in the
Southern Ocean. Adrienne currently holds five world
sailing speed records, we believe only Steve Fossett
holds more.
She has recently completed her Master of Science in
Applied Meteorology, specialising in the weather of the
Southern Ocean.
Since her award she has continued achieving. Adrienne
was 2003 Admiral’s Cup winner for Australia as navigator
on Aftershock, navigated Andrew Short Marine to fifth
across the line and first of the Volvo 60s in the Sydney to
Hobart race and most recently, as navigator on board
Cheyenne slashed almost 6 days off the Round the
World Sailing Record, the record now stands at 58 days
9 hours 32 mins 45 secs.
We are proud to have Adrienne as our club patron.
Sydney to Hobart Win and more to Michael Spies
Current Laser club champion, Michael Spies once again
proved his versatility by stepping into First National Real
Estate as skipper to win the Sydney to Hobart race. This
sits nicely with his 1999 line honours as co-skipper of
Nokia when he created a new race record time which still
stands.
Michael had barely finished the Hobart race when he was
racing in 11 Metre One Designs on Pittwater. He firstly
won the Australian Title and followed that with a win in
the World Championship.
All this and he rarely misses a race at Lane Cove.
Congratulations Michael.
As well as having sailed Sabots at Lane Cove, Michael
spent a number of years campaigning 12s and we
believe he will be making a comeback for the coming
season 30 years after he was the youngest person ever
to represent Australia in the Interdominion Championship.
Karen Gojnich to Athens
Karen along with Kristen Kosmala is crewing for Nicky
Bethwaite in the Women’s Ynglings at this year’s Olympic
Games in Athens.
www.lc12ftssc.org.au 6.

Karen started her sailing in Sabots and then Flying
Elevens at Lane Cove as Karen Davis. Her memories of
the club and the atmosphere that surrounded it inspired
her to keep her membership current through the years of
campaigning various classes and regattas including the
Seoul Olympics where she sailed with Nicky Bethwaite to
sixth position in the 470 class.
Karen now has two daughters, Amy and Zoe, sailing
Sabots at the club and has assisted with Learn to Sail
and junior training. She is currently campaigning in
Europe prior to the August Olympics where we are
hopeful she will bring back gold.
The club was proud to be able to make our facilities
available for a very successful fundraising party just prior
to their departure.
Rock Fall
Last year we reported that a major rock fall had occurred
behind the Western Shed. Whilst most of the damage
has been repaired and various reports commissioned by
Council, there has as yet been no action to improve the
safety of the area. We believe that Council will be taking
action early in the new financial year and are hopeful that
work will coincide with slipway upgrading.
Slipway
The club submitted an application for a grant to assist
with a major upgrade to the slipway adjacent to the
clubhouse under the State Government 2003 Sharing
Sydney Harbour Access Program.
Unfortunately our application was unsuccessful, however,
we have addressed the concerns of the assessment
team and have submitted a further application under the
2004 program.
If we are successful, work which involves a lot of
voluntary labour will commence this off season.
Maintenance
The clubhouse roof, which had reached the age of 30,
was badly in need of replacement. This was completed
early in the season using zincalume insulated to R2
rating. The ventilators were also replaced with industrial
quality Alsynite ventilators.
The roof on the western shed, being of similar age, is
also in need of replacement. We are in the process of
preparing an application for a grant under the NSW
Department of Sport and Recreation’s Capital Assistance
Program with a view to the work being done in the winter
of 2005.
The roof on the Woodford Bay shed is also badly in need
of repair and work will be carried out this winter to replace
a large section. We will also be attending to a lot of other
maintenance issues at that shed, often overlooked at our
regular working bees.
During the 2003 winter we held a successful weekend
working bee at which a large number of small but
important maintenance issues were addressed. These
included ongoing work on the slipway and general work
at the clubhouse, the major time consuming job being the
sanding back and varnishing of the south-facing windows
and door frames.
During the season a large portion of the western facing
brick wall of the clubhouse was re-grouted.
CLASS REPORTS
12FT SKIFFS
It has been a very busy season for the 12s. Where to
begin?
The highlight this season was the number of boat
registrations, 17 in all, a healthy increase on last year.
It was not unusual to have a fleet of 15 starters, and
indeed, given the competition available a number of
visitors boosted the fleet on some Saturdays to 18.
Our fleet of 17 boats at Lane Cove has a unique depth
and quality. It is the largest of any club in Australia and
New Zealand. This has been reflected in our results both
at a club and representative level. Our excellent club
handicap system has ensured that boats that are
15 years old can still win the Pointscore.
www.lc12ftssc.org.au 7.

Murray Press and Ben Gemmell in What Next should be
congratulated for winning the Club Championship without
losing a race. Second place went to Nick Press and
Michael “Wally” Bartley in Dimension Polyant and third
to Exaqua sailed by Bill Oxby and Ian Goodman. Murray
and Ben also won the Fastest Time Pointscore with Foxy
Lady Too sailed by Peter Polec and Brad Greenrod
second and Ming Fes sailed by myself and Glenn
Farquhar third.
The Handicap Pointscore came down to the last race
between Havoc sailed by James Francis and Scott
Hobson, Hood sailed by “Curly” Colless and Brad Phillips
and Ming Fes. The gauntlet was clearly thrown down in
the last 2 races with Havoc installing a new big rig and
Curly donning a brand new jib. In the end Glenn and
myself just reached home with enough points to win, with
Hood second and Havoc third.
Havoc - James Francis and Scott Hobson
The Australian titles were held in Brisbane at Easter.
23 boats contested the six heat regatta, 8 of which were
from Lane Cove. The breeze started at 3 rd rig on day 1,
went to 2 nd rig on day 2, big rig on day 3 and you would
be forgiven for staying at the bar on day 4 as there was
little breeze and 200 odd lasers on the water. All Lane
Cove boats performed well. The highlights were Jack
Winning and Brett Phillips in Vantage Real Estate who
came second on handicap while Grumble and Grunt
came third on handicap and succeeded in keeping their
boat together. For me the high point was seeing Havoc
leading the fleet in the final race, eventually finishing third
to the winner by 30 seconds. Nice work guys. James
and Scott also won the Junior title. Murray Press teamed
up with son Nick in What Next and finished fifth overall
to win the Veterans’ title.
Lane Cove had six boats go to New Zealand this year to
contest the Interdominions. They were Grumble and
Grunt, Dimension Polyant (Aust), Billy Olsen and
Jamie McCrudden in Space Junk, Exaqua, What Next
and Ming Fes. It was fantastic to have so many boats on
the team. Whilst I may be accused of heresy, sailing in
Auckland proved almost as difficult as Lane Cove's
courses. Whilst much is said about the Lane Cove
sailors having local knowledge on the river, escaping the
4 knot tide on Auckland Harbour was no different and as
much an art-form. It was not unusual to hear a skipper
ask a crew whether they could get closer to shore, only to
hit the bottom a moment later.
The Teams Trophy came down to the final day with New
Zealand just beating Australia. The regatta was won
overall by Signature Homes a New Zealand boat. Best
placed Australian boat was defending champion and
Queensland boat East Coast Piling and Drilling sailed
by Paul O'Malley Jones and Randall Fitzsimon. Best
placed Lane Cove boat was What Next being sixth
overall and third Australian boat.
The future for the 12 class at Lane Cove looks bright. If
you were cynical, you would say that it is because there
are limited alternatives. I believe that even if that were
true, the fact that Lane Cove remains one of the few
12 clubs, and indeed the strongest, is because racing at
Lane Cove is always fun and can never be described as
dull or boring. You need only join into the rig discussions
on the wharf every Saturday to appreciate how lucky we
are.
The challenge for the Lane Cove 12s in the future will be
accommodating more boats as keen sailors amongst our
junior ranks look for an exciting boat to sail. What a great
challenge to have. We do, however, need to ensure that
we continue to foster a participatory and fun spirit that
concentrates at the club level first.
The 12s this season have received a lot of support from
the club - for which I and the other 12 sailors are grateful.
Thank you Sue and John for starting us each week, the
committee for keeping the club running, Lyn Francis and
the canteen workers for ensuring we are fed, the Club
Captains and the OODs for making it work.
One final note – I know of some excellent boats for sale,
and skippers and crews available. If you are keen to get
in, change or upgrade, please let me know and I will do
what I can to help you.
LASERS
William Oxby – twelves@lc12ftssc.org.au
The Laser class enjoyed strong competition with a fleet of
35 boats. Our four new members made a positive
contribution to the class throughout the year and we look
forward to their return next season.
Michael Spies is to be congratulated for his strong
performance this season and for winning the Club
Championship, the Fastest Time Pointscore and for
nearly winning the Handicap Pointscore. Michael and
James Stewart in Harvey were separated by the
slimmest of margins before the last pointscore race of the
season, and James was the victor by one point.
Congratulations James, for your consistent effort
throughout the season.
www.lc12ftssc.org.au 8.

Eastern Creek Karts - Michael Spies
Warwick Thompson and James Stewart were amongst
the few club representatives at regattas this season.
Thankfully they acquitted themselves very well. As for
the rest of us… we need to get out more! Regattas are a
fantastic way of improving skills, and they do sound like
fun – especially if Warwick’s stories are true! The Notice
of Race for the 2005 Australian Championships at
Belmont is on the Laser Association website now, and
everyone is encouraged to attend (www.laser.asn.au).
Harvey - James Stewart
One of the emerging trends in our fleet over the past few
seasons has been the increasing popularity of the Radial
rig. The Radial uses a more flexible and slightly shorter
lower mast, and has a sail area of 5.76m 2 , which is about
18% smaller than the Standard rig (7.06m 2 ). The Radial
is suited to crew weights of 55-70 kg, whereas the
Standard is recommended for crews that are greater than
60 kg (source: International Laser Class Association). A
reasonable number of sailors in our fleet are discovering
the benefits of the Radial compared with the Standard rig
in respect of handling characteristics. Some sailors in the
fleet use a Radial exclusively, whereas others alternate
between rigs depending on the conditions.
As you can see, the Radial increases sailing
opportunities and enables a broad assortment of crews to
sail together, which is evident in this year’s trophy results.
Given the number of Radials on the water each week,
should Radials be distinguished from the Standard rigs in
the race results? One of the chief reasons to do this
would be to attract other Lasers to our club, either as
visitors or members. A bigger fleet means greater
competition, particularly for the better sailors in the fleet
(I’ll have to take their word for it!). The other reason
would be to encourage our existing Radials within the
fleet. Whatever the outcome, any changes for next
season need to be simple for everyone to manage and
administer.
This leads into thanking all those tireless volunteers who
make it possible for us to sail each weekend. To our
wonderful starters and rescue boat crews, I would like to
extend a warm word of thanks for your consistency,
patience and friendship on and off the water.
Many thanks to all sailors, friends and family who helped
out at the Laser dinner. Your cooperation and
experience was greatly appreciated, and contributed to
the night’s success.
Finally, on behalf of the Laser class, I would like to thank
the other members of the committee for all their hard
work this season. The time and energy donated by the
committee to the running of the club is impressive. There
are many ways that you can assist the committee and the
club (off-season working bees, learn to sail, canteen duty,
and club dinners to name a few), and your continued
involvement next season would be greatly appreciated.
CHERUBS
Penny Oxby – lasers@lc12ftssc.org.au
Cherubs re-emerged this season with a consistent
showing at the club but never hit the magical six
registrations to run a Club Championship, but nothing
was going to dull the enthusiasm of this colourful fleet.
Indeed it has been a successful year in that sailing was
competitive and at least 2 new boats will boost the fleet in
2004. The sailing was very upright this season despite it
being the first in Cherubs for several of the combinations
– perhaps to avoid the embarrassment of having
swimming photos published!
Two cherubs based at Balmain started sailing with us this
season but the distance to the start and then to sail home
proved a challenge. Poppy Moore and Tom Petty on
Bad Habits regularly joined us and registered with Lane
Cove. It was great to have them with us and boosted our
competition. Adam Ross and his dad also occasionally
made the trek but like a number of our sailors Adam had
to juggle this with the demands of the HSC.
www.lc12ftssc.org.au 9.

Our all girl boats led the way and finished on top of all
club events this season with the aged (experienced) and
youthful combinations challenging strongly. Melanie
Killoran and Kate Hayward teamed up on Screamin
Seamen and won the double of Fastest Time and
Handicap Pointscores and, but for a sixth boat the Club
Championship (which would have made a neat trifecta).
Felicity Killoran and Emma Press sailing Bird on a Wire,
which transformed itself during the season to Creatures
of Leisure followed up with seconds in the point scores
closely followed by Ajax and the age and youth combo of
Warwick and Matt Foy with thirds.
Screamin Seamen - Melanie Killoran and Kate Hayward
All these boats featured at the State Championships,
HSC and Uni commitments intervening. While Lane
Cove could not field a full team at all events, individual
boats performed well with Ajax winning the December
heat sailed from the Sydney Flying Squadron, and
Screamin Seamen and Creatures each gaining a top
10 placing in heats. All up, a good showing in a State
fleet of over 25 boats. Sailing venues were well spread
around this year including Georges River, Avalon, SFS
and Belmont – must be time for a return of the fleet to the
Upper Harbour (sans Humbug!).
Toey also emerged from the shed initially with Angela
Winning and Anna Paling and latterly with Will Chapman
and Rolf Lunsmann. Angela will be returning next
season to sail Toey with Mark Hayward and Rolf liked it
so much he went and bought a boat which he will be
sailing next season with daughter Fiona at the helm.
2003 has seen the class re-emerge and 2004 promises
to see us back up there with the fleet strength of several
years back. Rolf has all winter to learn the art of rigging
quickly, or maybe he is just training to be a skiff sailor
making the dash straight from shore to start line. Rob
Anderson and his son Ross have just taken possession
of Smashing Pumpkins leaving a few winter months for
Rob to refresh his sailing skills.
The 42 nd Australian National Championships will be run in
Sydney over the Christmas/New Year period and will be
hosted by Georges River, who are well advanced with
planning. This event will incorporate the 2004/05 World
Title with boats from New Zealand and the UK invited.
FLYING ELEVENS
David Killoran – cherubs@lc12ftssc.org.au
With one major outstanding performance exception, the
past season could be best described as a recovery and
consolidation season for our fleet.
Recovery, used in reference to the seemingly huge
exodus of well performed skippers and crews from the
class at the end of last season and consolidation of the
development of the crew combinations, both new and
from the past year, that has emerged from the
determination shown by the end of this season.
Registration numbers were marginally up on the previous
year at 14 boats with the new arrival teams being
Matt Clune and James Armstrong, Evan Williams and
James Watt, Lara Paton and Amy Goodman,
Catherine Trew and Alex Bramley, Jay Griffin and
Ross Woodthorpe Anderson, Ned Daven and
Robbie Polec and the late arrival of Anna Paling and
Amie Goodall. Owen Clarke, overseas for much of the
season, teamed up with sister Mevagh.
Some of the above combos didn't last the distance, with
Evan gaining an outstanding "find" in Alex Paton and
looking like a very strong team for 2004/05. The recent
CHS Champs also revealed Matt giving Jonathan Tan a
taste of F11s and hopefully we'll see another enthusiastic
crew for next season.
Regrettably, during the early shakedown period, Tom
Phillips and Lachy Notley found other "callings" and
7 Minutes … languished in the shed much of the season.
From the beginning of 2003/04, the already well-drilled
combination of Andrew and Alison Chapman was
devastatingly faster than those in the other boats and
when their new boat, River Rat, hit the water, it was
obvious to most in our class that the siblings could
achieve that interclub pinnacle not seen at Lane Cove
F11s for 20 odd years.
The situation of that early superiority gave the Chappos a
great start to the season pointscores and it wasn't until
much later, even into 2004, that handicaps became more
settled and other trophy winners started to show through.
The season started with lighter breezes for the Handicap
assessment races and by the time the pointscores
started, so did the normal stronger winds. This had the
effect of showing the inexperience of the new ones, who
had difficulty finishing and therefore unable to gain much
handicap adjustment.
www.lc12ftssc.org.au 10.

In many of the races, there was very close competition
between Up Front (Kelly Paling & Angus Stuart), JynX
(Jay & Ross), A Little Tipsy (Allison Kenney & Rachel
Massingham) and X-stream (Evan & Alex) with Playing
Havoc (Josh & Oscar Tatham), Thoroughbred (Lara &
Amy) and latterly Follow Me (Anna & Amie) snapping at
their heels and we should expect good results from them
next season.
But the big result was the achievements of Andrew and
Alison …
State Champions for 2003/04!
This really capped their other outstanding interclub
performance of third in the Nationals held on Moreton
Bay, Qld and these successes have been the result of
dedicated and determined application to the goal of
winning. They will have to go down in our club record
books as being possibly one of the best performed F11
representatives from our club.
On top of all this, they have taken out the Club
Championship, Fastest Time Pointscore and Handicap
Pointscore. They've only got one more feather to
achieve, the National Championship 2004/05 at
Woollahra and they've given indication that's what they
want! Our best wishes to them to go for it!
Our other Lane Cove boats representing at the State and
National Championships also held the club flag high and
started the road to championship standard in the future.
A lot of experience was gained by Allison Kenney, Jay,
and Evan. Evan played a different game by sailing with a
mate from Avalon at the States. They were joined at the
Nationals by Lara and Amy, with Evan resuming his own
boat and crew, X-stream and Alex! Unfortunately Ross,
due to a short term injury, missed the Nationals in JynX
and Jay had to "force" Robbie Polec to stand in for him.
One other very pleasing club gain coming from 2003/04
was the establishment of the Upper Harbour
Championship as a single race event at Lane Cove. We,
as a club, won't be able to "sit on our laurels" to keep this
event in the future; others immediately saw how
successful this inaugural year of the change was from its
previous 4 race format and have already suggested it be
held on a rotational basis and possibly take a "sprint"
format. For 2004, the format stays as is.
Let's hope that it will grow past the 50 entrant level this
coming year to ensure it's locked in to Lane Cove for
good!
The F11s are extremely lucky to have such great support
from the trophy donors and on the sailors’ behalf, we
offer a very sincere thank you for your generosity. It
would be a welcome event if, in the coming season, you
were able to come down on the Saturday sailing days,
particularly when they have raced for your trophy and join
in the after-race presentation.
We, and I include my own gratitude here, are also very
grateful to John Aston and Sue Cantor, Eric Cantor, Lyn
Francis and Sue Chambers for the starting and finishing
work they perform and a special thanks to Bob and Judy
Winning for laying marks and waiting in the Clyde for the
last boats to arrive home every Saturday. THANK YOU!
And lastly, there have been many non-F11-sailors who
have been of great assistance to the class and the
individual sailors - Trish & Alan Kenney, Alan Clarke, Bob
Paton, Peter and Will Chapman, Claudette and Murray
Williams, Rob Anderson, Ben Goodman, Ross Gardner
and special thanks to Jo Clarke for the fantastic webwork,
Rolf Lunsmann and his apprentice, Debbie
Goodman, for all the pictorial features they've produced.
www.lc12ftssc.org.au 11.

A personal "thank you" from me to Andrew and Alison for
the assistance they have given to adjust boat set-ups and
offer one-on-one training and advice at various times
throughout the 2003/04 season.
Well done everyone and get ready, 2004/05 is nearly
here!
Good Sailing.
Richard Griffin – Flyingelevens@lc12ftssc.org.au
JUNIOR DIVISION (LEARN TO SAIL, SABOT CLASS
AND MANLY JUNIOR CLASS)
This has been another great season for the Juniors at
Lane Cove. As a development division it is a continuing
task to bring in new sailors, develop their skills, foster the
enjoyment of sailing and encourage more experienced
sailors to move on to senior classes to try new and
exciting challenges. These activities are key to the long
term health of the club and the sport and we are pleased
to report that Lane Cove has done well in all these areas.
The season started quietly as we watched some of last
year’s Juniors take their first steps in a more senior class.
It is here that the experience gained in the Junior Division
shows as last year’s sailors have advanced quickly in
new boats. Approximately 9 Juniors moved into Flying
11s.
For those joining the Junior Division or following on from
last year there were new boats to get used to and new
crew combinations needed to start the season. This year
provided plenty of challenge as prior to Christmas we
experienced a number of strong windy days.
Registrations in the Junior Division classes were strong
with 7 One-up Sabots, 5 Two-up Sabots and 5 Manly
Juniors registered to sail. These boats compete in our
overall Combined Classes Handicap Pointscore
Competition and for donated trophies allocated to
particular race days. The club also awards trophies and
runs competitions in each class including a Club
Championship where there are six or more boats
registered and this year the Club Championship One-up
Sabot competition was run and awarded. The year also
saw the creation of a separate junior development group
called the Silver Sabot Fleet which very successfully
helped to graduate children from the Learn to Sail
program into regular racing.
Combined Classes Handicap Pointscore Competition
The three classes in the Junior Division fleet all compete
for the Gordon Gates Memorial Trophy using handicap
pointscores. This year’s winner was Jeremy Johnson
sailing one-up in the Sabot Slippery. Jeremy utilised the
skills he built up last year to be a consistent and
successful competitor throughout the year in the face of
strong competition from all the Junior sailors with up to
14 boats on the start line. Jeremy also won two Trophy
Races and deservedly also won the Grover Family
Trophy for the most improved Sabot sailor.
Sabot Class
The competition in the Club Championship One-up Sabot
class was again exciting with two boats competing right
down to the last race for the title. The winner was
Danielle Bujna in Wipeout. Danielle only secured the
win in the last race having started that race tied on points
with Fiona Lunsmann in Unpredictable. The strength of
the competition is indicated by the fact that three different
boats won Club Championship heats. Danielle also won
the One-up Sabot Fastest Time trophy. Close on
Wipeout’s stern was Fiona Lunsmann in Unpredictable
achieving second place. Fiona also won a Trophy Race
in the Junior Division competition. Third was Claire
Lunsmann racing in No Speed Limit, her first season
sailing one-up. Claire also won a Trophy Race in the
Junior Division competition showing how all these
competitors kept up the pace in a great year’s
competition. In Two-up Sabots Tim Stiff and Eleanor
Winston in Temperamental won the Iron Ring Trophy
Sabot Two-up Fastest Time Pointscore.
Interclub competition and participation in other events is
critical in skill development and a number of the club’s
Sabot sailors represented Lane Cove in Sabot
Association interclub racing. Claire and Fiona Lunsmann
contested a very windy State Championship at Lake
Macquarie in October. Claire along with Jeremy Johnson
in Slippery raced the Zone Championships at BYRA and
they, along with Alex Paton in Meteorite, sailed in the
NSW Sabot Sprint Series at Abbotsford in February.
www.lc12ftssc.org.au 12.

Alex was awarded a SNSW Zone Sabot Association
Encouragement Award for her efforts in the Sprint Series.
Manly Junior Class
Every Manly Junior in the club was in the water at some
time this year. In a second season of sailing Sophie
Paling and Max Stuart in Unreal won the Manly Junior
Fastest Time as well as a Trophy Race. The Beth and
Ray Dawkins Trophy for the most improved Manly Junior
was awarded to Jonathan Tan and Max Russo in Sea-U-
Later who also won two Trophy Races. Other sailors in
this year’s competition included last year’s Gordon Gates
Memorial Trophy winner Alex Winston, sailing with James
Phillips in Sylvester’s Revenge, and competing for the
first time was Andrew Clune and Tom Baxter in
Windspeed.
Learn to Sail, Silver Sabot Fleet and Friday Night “All
Comers” Twilight
One of the highlights of this year was the successful
transition of a group of junior members from novice Learn
to Sail participants to accomplished sailors in the Silver
Sabot Fleet. The club ran two, five day Learn to Sail
courses in the September/October school holidays which
allowed 38 children to be introduced to the sport of
sailing. This programme is run entirely by club
volunteers, both old and young, who are dedicated to
helping children experience the thrills sailing has to offer.
The Learn to Sail graduates needed some focussed
coaching and a supportive environment to allow them to
move to a level where they could confidently enjoy
competing in the Junior Division. By Christmas these
kids' boat handling skills had developed to the point
where most of them could get around the regular Junior
Course. To allow them to pit their skills on the “race
track” a Silver Sabot Fleet Pointscore competition was
held over the last 10 races of the season. The overall
result went right down to the wire. Amy Gojnich and
Melinda Smith in Panic snared a second place in the last
race by one second giving them the overall series.
Jacqueline Smith and Catriona Glassock in Oink! Oink!,
who had been leading on points going into the final race,
finished second overall with Tim Stiff and Eleanor
Winston in Temperamental third.
Thanks to all the parents who helped out in the tinnies
and acted as slips catchers during the season.
To give the Learn to Sail graduates another opportunity
to get out on the water, and as a way of parents easing
younger members of the family into sailing, Karyn
Gojnich organised a series of five races spread either
side of Christmas. Amy Gojnich, Zoe Gojnich, Louis
Berger, Tyler Nutt, Oliver Hartas, Tim McGrath, Jack
McGrath, Gael Glassock, James Glassock, Melinda
Smith, Jacqueline Smith, William Frohlich and Lachlan
Frohlich all took the opportunity to participate. It was a
good way to finish the week – the kids really enjoyed
competing for the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals that
were on offer for the race winners. All Karyn needs to
organise is better weather for next season – cold wet
southerlies are banned on Twilight Fridays!
Combined High Schools Regatta
An exciting end to the junior sailing year is the Combined
High Schools Regatta at Lake Macquarie which saw a
number of our sailors competing, but often in another
class – a testament to their skill development and future
potential. Claire Lunsmann sailed in her Sabot No
Speed Limit and finished fourth in a strong Sabot fleet.
Jonathan Tan, Fiona Lunsmann, and Sophie Paling all
moved into Flying 11s for this event. This year was
blessed by glorious weather, excellent winds and great
camaraderie at the Belmont Pines camping ground which
became an unofficial Lane Cove outpost.
