Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity was founded
on November 1, 1901, by 12 men at
Richmond College, later known as the
University of Richmond. While in the formative
stages, the six original members
found six others who also were searching
for a campus fellowship that neither the
college campus nor the existing fraternity
system could offer. Soon there were 12
members, and they held their first meeting
in Ryland Hall, the birthplace of
Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The Virginia Kappa colony of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity was started when 16 friends
decided they wanted something more than just a drinking club. These friends met together
in Cullen Hackler and Mike Farley’s residence hall to discuss plans for starting a national
fraternity on campus. On April 29, 1969, the Sigma Phi Epsilon colony was established
at ceremonies held in the northwest branch of the Blacksburg National Bank; on April 25,
1970, it received its charter and subsequently moved into its house, which was formerly
part of Mountain View Estate.
Not only does this distinction give the
fraternity a rich and plentiful history, it
allows it to pass on the achievements of
Virginia Kappa to its new members. First,
the fraternity strives to increase the values,
substance, and character of its members.
Secondly, it endeavors to become the finest
chapter that it can be, through philanthropy,
academics, recruitment, alumni relations,
and social events. Finally, it seeks to provide
lifelong assets to its members through
unforgettable experiences, strong ethics,
and invaluable friendships.
