GREEK LIFE portico 2009-2010 A MeSSAGe FroM the univerSity preSident Welcome to Virginia Tech! Being part of the largest university in the state means you have the opportunity to become involved with your choice of literally hundreds of organizations that will complement your academic life and round out your educational experience. Achieving balance in life is essential, and part of our vision at Virginia Tech is to educate the whole person. Students often tell me that, for them, joining a Greek organization was the key to transforming this vast campus into a community. The American Fraternity Movement at Virginia Tech is currently thriving with about 3,500 members. While each chapter has a somewhat different focus, they all share some fundamental goals: promoting superior scholarship, promoting high social and moral standards, developing leadership skills, and performing community outreach. The latter could include working with a literacy organization, the American Cancer Society or Leukemia Society, or with organizations that aid the homeless or underprivileged children, just to name a few. The Greek organizations also play a significant role in the “Big Event,” a tremendously successful community service event that is held each spring. Not surprisingly, the vast majority of Virginia Tech’s student leaders are members of collegiate fraternal societies. I encourage you to explore the opportunities the Greek system has to offer. Make new friends, discover new talents and interests, and refine your leadership skills. Your diploma will be invaluable, but don’t miss the opportunity to take with you so much more. Dear Potential MeMber: GREEK LIFE Greetings and welcome to Fraternity and Sorority Life at Virginia Tech! We are very proud to have a strong community that offers myriad experiences to each member. We have the fourth largest Greek community in the United States, so you are sure to find a chapter to enhance your collegiate experience. It is our sincere hope that you will become part of our future and leave your legacy at Virginia Tech. Fraternity and Sorority Life advises four councils that govern our chapters. Each council has a different focal point, operational structure, and history. Chapters range in size from three to 160 members, some housed and some not. There are a wealth of opportunities and activities going on every day of the semester. Academically, fraternities and sororities are frequently above the all-university average, and members comprise the vast majority of leadership positions on campus. We raise large amounts of donations for an assortment of philanthropic causes; many of our chapters participate in community service projects throughout the year as well. There are educational programs, speakers, discussions, and a host of leadership opportunities to be had. You will have the ability to get involved in many aspects of campus life, including intramurals, religious services, academic support, cultural programming, personal and professional development, and leadership development. In short, Fraternity and Sorority Life offers a one-stop opportunity to experience every aspect of what Virginia Tech has to offer. It is our hope that you will take the time to research all that our chapters have to offer. With over 60 chapters to choose from, you will certainly find a place to call home. Remember, fraternity and sorority membership is a life-long commitment—not just something you will experience for your undergraduate days. We hope to see you at our events and look forward to welcoming you into our family as we congratulate you on your membership in one of our esteemed chapters.
