In the fall of 1854, just one year after
the 1853 opening of the newly merged
Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania, Gustavus W. Mayer and John
MacLean Jr., of the Princeton Chi Phi Order,
formed the Lancaster Chapter of Chi
Phi by initiating eight students. They were
Joseph H. dubbs, Calvin M. duncan, John
Ault, Alfred B. Schwartz, William Leaman,
Augustus J. Cover, Jeremiah M. Mickley,
and William S. Stenger. The initiation ceremonies
of these charter members were
held in the recitation room of the professor of mathematics in the old college buildings on
Lime Street, the key having been purloined for the purpose. According to tradition, dubbs
was the first initiate. On May 29, 1867, the chapter united with the Hobart Chi Phi to form
the Northern Order, and it became the Zeta Chapter of Chi Phi on January 10, 1886.
