IFC 12 Portico 2009-2010 Dear fellow HoKies, First off, I would like to congratulate each of you for making an excellent decision by choosing to attend Virginia Tech. Looking back, my years here at the university seem brief and I am glad that I was able to make the most of them. You are taking a step in the right direction by opening this book and learning about how rewarding Greek life can be here at Virginia Tech. With over 60 fraternities and sororities, our campus has something to offer everyone. When you make the decision to become involved in Greek Life, you have the opportunity to experience many of the things that the school and community have to offer. Our chapters all participate in a wide variety of community service projects, philanthropic events, athletic competitions, and fundraisers to benefit the community. Being part of a Greek letter organization can help provide you with skills that you will need in the real world, as well as friendships that will last a lifetime. By working within a Greek community, many of the brothers and sisters of Virginia Tech Greek life have been able to experience the satisfaction of being part of something larger than themselves. I have seen many young Virginia Tech students grow and mature into responsible adults because of the opportunities that membership in a Greek organization afforded them. I can say confidently that going Greek has been one of the most beneficial and enjoyable decisions I have made thus far in my life, and it has helped me to grow personally every day. Joining any student organization here at Virginia Tech allows you to grow as a person and become a better man or woman. Pouring my heart into the Greek community has helped me realize accomplishment beyond my wildest dreams. When I put on my cap and gown in May, I will not look back and wish I had done more with my time in college, because I will know that Greek life allowed me to give back so much to the university. I encourage all of you to reach your potential as students and individuals and come to realize that taking advantage of the opportunities within Greek life can help you reach your goals. Lastly, good luck to all of you with your schoolwork. Hopefully I will see you all in the coming year as proud members of Virginia Tech’s Greek community. BrOThErhOOd The bond of friendship between brothers is strengthened throughout their college careers and remains strong throughout their lifetimes. This unity and friendship not only exists within the local chapters, but also spreads to chapters and alumni across the country. As the bond is not by birth, but by choice, the friendship and dedication are even stronger. Fraternities strive to combine the common goals and ideals of brotherhood with the unique experiences of the individual to create a meaningful whole. ACAdEMICS Academics are your first priority as a student at Virginia Tech. A common concern of many students is that joining a fraternity may take away from study time. In actuality, fraternities help create academically successful students. Fraternity membership helps keep students in college. Research conducted by the National Interfraternity Council found fraternity membership increased the student graduation rate by about 20 percent. Fraternities set strict guidelines for their members, and to help make these goals attainable, the organizations offer help in the form of support, personal guidance, and incentives. In addition, IFC encourages academic excellence through scholarship programs, individual awards, and chapter awards. The Virginia Tech IFC requires a minimum 2.25 GPA and 12 credits for a new member to be initiated into a fraternity.
