Message from Your Deer Valley Eagles Presidents
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Can you believe it? The holidays are just around the corner! Joey Dominguez and
Carole Downey were the chairpersons for our September charity, The Disaster
Relief Fund, and they raised $3,003.00. The Labor Day “Pool above the Pool”
party and the “Shit Happens” party were a lot of fun and well attended by
everyone. Fantastic job Carole, Joey and everyone who helped out; you had a
very successful month!
The Four Corners Regional Conference was held Sept. 24th at the Sunnyslope
Aerie. There was a great turnout, with all four states well represented, and it was
informative and fun for all who attended. The Fall Conference was held at Lake
Havasu Oct. 21st & 22nd. There will be more on that as well in the next
newsletter.

Borquez serving as your chairpersons. We will have more on their events in the
next newsletter. November’s charity is the Cancer fund. Fund raising will be a
conglomerate effort, so your support will be appreciated. Chairpersons Pete and
Anny will organize meat raffles and 50/50s. They will get help from Jodi Lynn and
Joe who will be organizing their 2nd Annual Bikers Fighting Cancer Run on
Saturday, Nov. 12th. Riders will meet at Deer Valley #3871 at 8:00 a.m. for
breakfast burritos.
We will end our Cancer fundraiser with a Luau on Saturday, December 3rd so bring
your grass skirts and Leis. In November, we will also begin taking cash and toy
donations for our annual toy run to the Children’s Sunshine Group Home in
December, so watch the white board for updates.
The state officers will be at Deer Valley #3871 on Saturday, Nov. 5th for their
annual visit. Social hour will begin at 4:00 p.m., the program and dinner to follow
at 5:00 p.m., so please stop in to say hello to your state officers. We are also very
fortunate to have OPUS band entertain us during and after the program. Please
stay and enjoy both, soothing and upbeat jazz music. We know you will enjoy it.
As most everyone knows, we lost a dear brother, Deer Valley #3871 Secretary
Bruce Tracey, on Sept. 25th . Bruce dedicated himself for over 28 years organizing
fundraisers for Aerie, State and Children’s Burn Camp, Camp Courage. We also lost
another dedicated eagle member and four time Deer Valley #3871 Past Worthy
President Don Cook on Sept 28, 2011. Both of these Aerie members had ambition,
energy, determination, and dedication of what the Fraternal Order of Eagles is all
about “People Helping People”. Both members shall be missed dearly.

Wow! What a wonderful turn out for Bruce’s memorial service.
The family was so pleased that you all came to show your last respects to Bruce along with us. It was so good to see that
he had so many friends. It was a good feeling.
Thanks for all of the flowers, money, cards, phone calls and just for showing up. You all made it very special.
And I want to thank the Deer Valley Choir. They keep getting better and better. And also all who are in the service.

Grand International Horseshoe Tournament
Deer Valley #3871 has been chosen to host the first Grand International
Horseshoe Tournament, February 24th – 27th, 2012. This is quite an honor and
will open the door for us to host future tournaments.
We can expect Eagle members to travel here from all over the U.S. and Canada to
attend. The East Coast has hosted summer tournaments for years, but this is the
first western tournament ever held. Besides the tournament, we will be
providing meals and entertainment for the players.
Below is a list of the various committees that will be needed to coordinate the
event. As you can see, there are quite a few. Please take a look and decide on
which committee you would like to serve. We especially need volunteers for the
meals and for clean-up. There are sign-up sheets for each committee on the
bulletin board by the jukebox.
You will be contacted after October 1st as to the first meeting time for your
committee. As you can imagine, this is a large undertaking for our Aerie and we
will need everyone’s help with this event.
Deer Valley #3871 can benefit greatly from hosting the tournament, but it is going
to take every member’s participation to make it a success! Thank you all for your
participation and let’s do Deer Valley proud!!

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!
Serve the needs of your fellow
brothers and sisters by
volunteering for a committee in
order to support the Grand
International Horseshoe
Tournament.

Our very own Glendale Eagle Riders
has officially been chartered.
Check it out on the banquet room
South wall.

Tournament Committee – Will coordinate the classes of the tournament, the needs
of the players, the scorers and readiness of the pits.
Scorers – Will keep score of the players. Each player will pay the scorer $1 for each
game they score.
Awards Committee – Will purchase trophies/ plaques for winners of each class and
assist with awards ceremony.
Kitchen Committee – Will coordinate supplies for meals and their storage, readiness
of equipment, and cook meals. The committee will consist of servers, cooks, and
cashiers.
Clean-Up Crew – Will wash dishes, take out trash, sweep/mop floor, and clean
equipment after meals. There will be a different clean-up crew assigned to each
meal. When you sign up indicate which day and meal you are available.
Grounds Committee – Will be responsible for clean-up of the grounds, emptying
trash containers, security for the back gate, arranging for port-a-johns and their
supplies, and parking control.
Janitorial Committee – Will help Pearl with cleaning inside the Aerie each morning
and maintaining the bathroom supplies throughout the day.
Welcoming Committee – Will welcome each player, check their registration, sign
them in on our Visitor’s Book, and hand out the player’s packets. The committee will
also put together a booklet of the event and sponsors of the tournament.
Hospitality Committee – Will work with the welcoming committee to take care of
any needs of our guests, answer questions regarding hotels, shopping centers, local
attractions, and the Aerie schedule of meals and entertainment. The committee will
also be responsible for manning portable bar(s) outside.
Marketing Committee – Will recruit sponsors for the tournament, invite all Arizona
Aeries to the event, and sell event T-shirts.
Media/Publicity Committee – Will coordinate information about the tournament to
the State, Grand and Deer Valley websites, and the local newspapers and radio. The
committee will also write an article after the event for the Grand News, assisted by
the Historian Committee.
Pictures/Historian Committee – Will take pictures and record the details of the
tournament on Deer Valley’s website and Facebook page and club monitor.
Stepheny Anderson is this year’s historian, but she will need assistants to “cover all
the bases.”

On Sat. Nov. 5, the Auxiliary is participating in a neighborhood Garage
Sale in Sun City Grand. We need donations to that, as well as for folks to
come & shop at our booth. Contact Emily @ EMiller@NORQUAY.NET for more
info.
On Sat., Nov. 12 we are having our first party! It's open to members &
their guest's as a new member drive/ building fundraiser. It will be held @
the Windmill Inn & Suites, 12545 W. Bell Rd., 1/2 mile West of
El Mirage Rd. in Surprise.
Tickets are $5 per person in advance. Liquid refreshments for cash will be
available, or byob & donate it to the Aerie. There will be snacks & hors d'ouvers,
music, a 50/50 drawing, as well as a chance to win a $50 gift card with each drink

Our volunteer of the month for October is Michelle Shockey.
Volunteer of the Month
Michelle is a bundle of energy jumping in to help wherever she can. She works with the Junior Eagles, teaching little lessons
with her unique sense of humor and thinking up great activities for the kids. You have also seen her (and Travis) in the
kitchen cooking up good food to raise money for charity.
Michelle is also chairman of the decorating committee. She and her team work hard to transform our Aerie for events and
holidays. Most of all, Michelle’s positive spirit and willingness to help have earned her Volunteer of the Month. Please take a
moment to thank her for her contribution to your Aerie.

A Trip to Sam’s Club
Yesterday I was at my local SAM'S CLUB buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Biscuit, the Wonder Dog, and
was in the checkout line when the woman behind me asked if I had a dog.
What did she think I had an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a
dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but
that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in
both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets
and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to
try it again.. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)
Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to
sniff an Irish Setter's butt and a car hit us both.
I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard.
Sam's Club won't let me shop there anymore. Better watch what you ask retired people! They have all the time in the
world to think of crazy things to say.

CANCER MYTH:
