far between. For those who have lived
here a long time, the Metcalf family was
legendary. The two brothers Fred and Paul
with their sister Abbie lived together on
the Dutton Hill farm on which they all
grew up. Fred was the musician playing
the organ for both St. Barnabas and the
Congregational Church; Abbie left the
farm to pursue a career as a librarian but
then returned to the farm and the Thayer
School library and then the Norwich
Library. Paul was the farmer, working the
land inherited from their family.
This year our exhibits look at today’s
gardeners and their gardens, but we also
look back and honor those who worked
the land for their livelihoods. Paul kept
wonderful diaries through the years, and
the Historical Society is fortunate enough
to have some of them in our collection.

REPORT ON 2011
We like to make this newsletter our annual
report and take advantage of this opportunity to say
a special thank you to all our donors, members, and
friends without whom our work would not be possible.
Your Historical Society continues to grow and
thrive thanks to the generous support of the Norwich
community, and 2011, the celebration of the
250th anniversary of the signing of our Town’s Charter,
was no exception.
Along with the
Historic
Walking Tour
Library, the Women’s
Club and the Town,
we coordinated a series
of celebratory events.
Everything came
together on September
17th on the Norwich
green with our own
Charter Day. We were
honored to have the
Color Guard from Norwich
University with
us. Senator Leahy sent
a flag that had flown
over the U.S. Capitol,
and Governor Peter

Curators in the Community,
a look at life in Norwich
today, is the 250th
exhibit curated by the
Marion Cross students,
and represents every class.
It is a lasting time capsule
until the 300th anniversary
celebration in 2061!
The Historical Society
works closely with
our Historic Preservation
Commission. In 2011,
thanks to a federal grant and additional support from
the Preservation Trust of Vermont and Dartmouth
Printing, we produced a wonderful Historic Walking
Tour brochure. You can find it at the Norwich
Inn, Library and Tracy Hall and in the Vermont
State Welcome Centers. We know it is bringing

Society’s website that
will focus on the preservation
projects underway.

hoping to do some major restoration work, and the
Grange needs attention too.

A Bequest to the Historical Society
Thank to the generosity of Michael McGean,
a long-time Norwich resident, the Historical Society
was the beneficiary of a bequest in 2011. Mike
had been a member and supporter of the Historical
Society for many years and offered his time and
fundraising skills to help with the capital campaign
when the Society moved to its current site in 2003.
His enthusiasm and commitment to preserve Norwich’s
history and restore the Lewis House encouraged
other gifts as well, successfully jumpstarting
the campaign. We are very grateful to him and to
his family for this bequest.
CHARITABLE BEQUESTS are gifts to the
Historical Society at the time of death under a
will or trust agreement. They are fully deductible
for Federal estate tax purposes. A bequest
may be made in the form of cash, securities, or
real estate.
The following sample language for an outright,
unrestricted residual bequest can easily
be added to an existing will or trust: “I give to
the Norwich Historical Society, Norwich, Vermont
_____________dollars ($________), or
__________percent (____%) of my residuary
estate, to be used for the benefit of the Norwich Historical
Society as the Trusteees thereof may direct.”
