<strong>in</strong>vited to become members of YWCA. Accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> research participants, some of <strong>the</strong> girls<br />

attend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ARP had already been circumcised<br />

but also received certificates at <strong>the</strong> end of<br />

<strong>the</strong> ceremony.<br />

FGD participants reported that <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at<br />

<strong>the</strong> ARP helps <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiates to understand about<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir body, <strong>the</strong>ir reproductive health and how<br />

<strong>the</strong>y change from childhood to adulthood and<br />

<strong>the</strong> challenges of adolescence. The participants<br />

mentioned that dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> one week tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

organised by YWCA <strong>the</strong>y were also taught<br />

about <strong>the</strong> negative effects of FGM, myths and<br />

misconception and <strong>the</strong> illegal status of FGM.<br />

Games, drama, songs and role play are used to<br />

engage <strong>the</strong> young girls.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> study participants, <strong>the</strong> ARP events<br />

were well managed and effective because <strong>the</strong>y<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved a small number of girls (50), to ensure<br />

better monitor<strong>in</strong>g and follow up after graduation.<br />

It also appears that <strong>the</strong> ARP tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g has been<br />

successful – accord<strong>in</strong>g to respondents, very few of<br />

<strong>the</strong> girls go back and get circumcised. Asked if<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would circumcise <strong>the</strong>ir daughters, most of <strong>the</strong><br />

participants who had <strong>the</strong>mselves undergone <strong>the</strong><br />

ARP said <strong>the</strong>y would not:<br />

I would do all <strong>in</strong> my ability to ensure that<br />

my daughters are not circumcised” (participant,<br />

FGD, ARP <strong>in</strong>itiates).<br />

However, ARP events are <strong>in</strong>tensive, requir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

considerable organisation and resources. The<br />

number of girls attend<strong>in</strong>g each YWCA ARP <strong>in</strong> 2011<br />

will be reduced to 25. This is because of difficulties<br />

<strong>in</strong> recruitment, monitor<strong>in</strong>g, follow up and secur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

adequate resources. YWCA <strong>in</strong>tends to support<br />

each target community for approximately 2 years<br />

before mov<strong>in</strong>g on to replicate this approach <strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r communities. However, FGD respondents<br />

felt that it would be difficult for <strong>the</strong> community to<br />

adopt and susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ARP courses without external<br />

support, due to <strong>the</strong> high cost, which <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g good food and accommodation for a<br />

week for <strong>the</strong> girls.<br />
