IISJ PHOENIX CRICKET CLUB
End of Term Newsletter
Term 1 has drawn to a close and it can be regarded as one of, if not
the most, successful periods of cricket seen at IISJ. It has been a
fitting way to say `goodbye` to cricket coach Mr. Thomas, who will
leave IISJ at the end of term to relocate overseas.
The major event of the year was the second installment of the
increasingly popular IISJ Premier Cricket League. The competition
returned for its second year bigger and better than ever. There was
also success for both the under 12`s and under 14`s school teams and
a record turnout for the cricket club which held its final session of the
term last Wednesday (27 th ).
Under 12`s team
The team played a number of friendly matches against Chiba Little
terns and British School in Tokyo. The emphasis was on fun and an
opportunity for some players to put the skills they developed in
cricket club in to practice. Many promising talents emerged from the
matches and we can safely say that the future of cricket at IISJ is safe
in the hands of our rising stars. Notably Debashish Sahoo, Yugandhar
R. and Dhruv.
Under 14`s Team
The under 14 team, highlighted in blue, were involved in a 3 match
series against the British School in Tokyo. All three games were
played at BST Sangenjaya campus on a beautiful astro-‐turf surface.
Although not a huge pitch it was still a challenge to score boundaries
which was testament to the quality of bowling on both sides. Having
successfully beaten BST on a number of occasions at under 12 level
the under 14 team went into the series quietly confident.
The first match did result in a Phoenix victory but it was a much
closer run thing than most had expected, BST had capable bowlers
and batters but not in the quantity or quality of IISJ. This match was
notable for the inclusion of Rauma Khadka the first female players to
represent the school at under 14`s, and although Rauma didn`t get an
opportunity with the bat or ball she was confident and capable in the
field. Man of the match Cameron of BST.
Match two was held on a Tuesday afternoon with IISJ once again
visiting BST. The team saw many changes from match 1, specifically
designed to improve IISJ`s sloppiness in the field, and to bolster the
middle order batting. IISJ won by a comfortable 35 run margin with
Nikheil Malakar picking up the man of the match award and IISJ
Phoenix the series.
Even though the series was wrapped up match 3 was no formality
with an unbeaten record and final match for Mr. Thomas as coach at
stake. Phoenix lost the toss and put into bat. As they had proven
throughout Atharva K. and Thayalan K. proved to be solid openers by
keeping out the tight opening BST bowlers, however runs were
scarce. After a run out led to the wicket of Atharva K. IISJ seemed to
have stalled. Up stepped Jatin Sharma and scored an impressive 18
from as many balls to guide IISJ to a total of 75 from 15 overs.
To win BST would have to produce a record score, they didn`t!
Phoenix were far too strong with the ball as Thayalan K. was on a
hat-‐rick with his first 3 balls, although it never came it did lead to a
BST collapse with the finest bowling display a Phoenix team has
produced, with 8 bowlers amongst the wicket takers. IISJ left
unbeaten and Mr. Thomas a proud and happy man.
Final message from Mr. Thomas IISJ Cricket Coach:
Dear students and parents,
It has been a pleasure being involved in the cricket set up at IISJ. I
have enjoyed every minute of it. The passion for cricket amongst the
students will be my lasting memory, and I hope that will long
continue. Thank you to parents for allowing your children to play,
Mrs. Jain for allowing us to hold the IPL tournament and investing in
cricket may this also long continue and go from strength to strength.
I am fortunate to have witnessed some genuinely talented
individuals through the last 2 years but more satisfying was to watch
players improve, whether that be with the bat or ball and also in their
attitude to the game and one another.
Kind regards,
Tom Sheard (Mr.Thomas)
NB: I will upload all cricket photos to Facebook and Flickr, you are
welcome to take copies from there.
