QueenS market baCk in
newham CounCil’S handS
The management of Queens Market is back in the hands of
Newham Council following the end of an agreement with St
Modwen Properties.
The council will now be working directly with market traders
and shopkeepers to continue to develop a sustainable future
for the market.
In March 2006, the council entered into a development
and management agreement with the property management
company to redevelop Queens Market. This included
providing a new market, a council front office and 350
residential units.
This agreement was conditional on obtaining planning
permission, site assembly and a number of other matters
within three years. Unfortunately, St Modwen Properties did
not meet these conditions.
Boleyn ward councillor Pearson Shillingford said: “The
council remains committed to Queens Market and has
recently opened it up for Sunday trading. A number of building
improvements have also been made to the market as well as
an innovative scheme to move towards zero waste. We look
forward to working closely with traders and the community to
ensure a prosperous future for the market.”
