Septic Prairie Mix for Sand & Gravel Backfill Yes, it is possible to grow flowers on the bare sand and gravel commonly used for backfilling septic fields, even without topsoil! How? By selecting the toughest prairie plants to match these demanding growing conditions. That’s exactly what we’ve done in our Septic Prairie Mix for Sand and Gravel Backfill. Studies have shown that the roots of prairie plants do not clog septic system pipes. In fact, these plants are recommended for planting over mounds and drainfields. Nutrients in the wastewater are taken up by the plants, instead of entering the groundwater. Now that’s ecological landscaping! Not recommended for septic systems that have received topsoil over the sand and gravel backfill. Use our Short Prairie for Medium Soils Mix on page 16 for sites with topsoil.
