Here’s a great wildflower garden for those shady spots that get only a few hours of direct sunlight
each day. Perfect for planting under shade trees, open woodlands and on shady woodland edges.
Stephanie Cohen, Instructor of Floriculture at Temple University in Ambler, PA, designed this garden
to provide year-round color and interest. The plants are used in groups and drifts for maximum
visual effect.
Adaptable to a wide range of soil types, they should do well in any good garden soil. Make sure that
you plant in a reasonably fertile, well-drained soil that is free of weeds. These plants do best in light to
moderate shade, and will benefit from a few hours of sun each day. Not recommended for extremely
dry soils.
Most woodland wildflowers bloom in spring, and then disappear for the summer. This woodland
edge garden has been specifically designed to provide color throughout the season, with summer
and fall blooming species that carry the show all the way into autumn.
