anyone visiting the school building<br />

can feel the energy in the air as the<br />

Winter Holiday approaches. We<br />

here at the school will continue to<br />

work hard delivering a dynamic<br />

curriculum…and we will enjoy seeing<br />

the wonder in the eyes of the<br />

students during this busy—but<br />

Santa’s Workshop will be held<br />

<strong>Dec</strong>ember 4th and 5th – check your<br />

calendar for times. Our Music<br />

Department will WOW us with a<br />

show that always far exceeds our<br />

expectations and the <strong>PTA</strong> will offer<br />

an assembly to the children focusing<br />

on eating right and exercising –<br />

an active, hands-on assembly all<br />

grades will enjoy. The <strong>PTA</strong><br />

meeting this month is on <strong>Dec</strong>ember<br />

7th at 7 pm. We’d love to see you<br />

there.<br />

Luncheon Thanks<br />

teacher’s conference day luncheon.<br />

help in organizing the luncheon.<br />

It was a big hit with the teachers<br />

were very thankful. Thank you to<br />

all the volunteers who baked<br />

desserts and brought cases of water<br />

<strong>PTA</strong> Meeting Monday, <strong>Dec</strong>ember 7th<br />

into applying to possibly cover<br />

some of the programs in these<br />

subjects that the <strong>PTA</strong> and our<br />

school offer; i.e., Math Night,<br />

Reading Incentives, and Science<br />

Skating Party Thanks<br />

T hank you to everyone who came<br />

and enjoyed the November skating<br />

party. Over 250 people joined us<br />

at the Olympic Skating Center and<br />

most of those in attendance wore<br />

skates. We all had a good time<br />

skating to the music and hanging<br />

out at the snack bar. We would also<br />

like to thank our skating party<br />

volunteers, Lori Cullins Hyman,<br />

Jackie Chappell, and Cindy Gundy<br />

for greeting people at the door and<br />

helping to keep everything running<br />

smoothly and safely. Mark your<br />

calendars for the Ice Skating Party<br />

on January 10 th, 4:15-5:45 pm, at<br />

Reflections Award Ceremony - January 14th<br />

ur local <strong>PTA</strong> Reflections<br />

O Awards Ceremony 20<strong>09</strong>-2010<br />

will be on Thursday, January 14th at 7:00 pm. It will be hosted at<br />

<strong>Paxtonia</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong> School in<br />

the multi-purpose room. All <strong>Paxtonia</strong><br />

parents, teachers and students<br />

are invited to join in.<br />

Invitations will be sent to all<br />

the Reflections participants to<br />

attend and all of them will be<br />

recognized for their hard work<br />

Ink Cartridge Recycling<br />

id you know on average three<br />

D quarts of oil are burned to<br />

make one new ink cartridge? An<br />

estimated 375,000,000 cartridges<br />

are thrown away every year. Do<br />

you have new/used ink cartridges<br />

you need to get rid of? Just drop<br />

them off in the box on the table in<br />

the front of the school. They will<br />

then be submitted for recycling and<br />

we will earn money for our<br />

school! <strong>Paxtonia</strong> wins and we help<br />

the environment along the way. We<br />

also accept old cell phones and<br />

judged at the local level and the<br />

winners will be notified in the<br />

first week of <strong>Dec</strong>ember.<br />

International Days 2010 - MEXICO!<br />

his year <strong>Paxtonia</strong> students will<br />

T experience Mexico! Each<br />

student will receive a helpful booklet<br />

that provides exciting information<br />

about Mexico. Please take<br />

time to review this booklet with<br />

your son or daughter, and enjoy<br />

learning about a country that is<br />

rich with history and culture. The<br />

dates for International Days are<br />

January 19-21. Planned activities<br />

include a live mariachi band, Mexican<br />

dancing, food tasting and a<br />

lively game show for all students.<br />

the selected country is an<br />

important part of International<br />

Days. This year, we are asking<br />

you to stop in on Saturday,<br />

January 16, 2010 to lend a helping<br />

hand. Even a couple of hours is a<br />

real help, and bring your <strong>Paxtonia</strong><br />

3rd—5th and will run for six weeks beginning<br />

January 7th After School Clubs to Begin<br />

every Thursday<br />

from 4-5 pm. Students can enjoy clubs<br />

such as Dance, Tae Kwon Do, Dodge<br />

ball, Math 24, Art, Scrapbooking, Cooking<br />

and many more. This year look for<br />

our new clubs such as science, card<br />

playing, and clubs focusing on money<br />

management and helping others.<br />

your Capri Sun/Honest Kids pouches<br />

and send them in to school. There is<br />

a box in the lobby. We will soon be<br />

adding a box in the cafeteria<br />

for packers. Also, during Holiday<br />

Party days this month, please save all<br />

the drink pouches that are used in<br />

class and drop them off. Please be<br />

sure no juice remains and remove the<br />

straws. Your efforts to recycle will<br />

earn <strong>Paxtonia</strong> $.02 for each<br />

From the School Counselor...<br />

he students did a fantastic job<br />

T of demonstrating responsible<br />

behaviors during our first marking<br />

period. We want to encourage<br />

these positive character traits to<br />

carry over into their daily activities<br />

outside school. Promoting responsibility<br />

at home and at school can<br />

start by simply modeling the<br />

desired behaviors. It is important<br />

to demonstrate the character traits<br />

we expect of our students and<br />

children. By behaving responsibly<br />

we further encourage and model<br />

what we expect.<br />

Helpful tips for encouraging<br />

responsibility:<br />

canned and boxed food for the<br />

food drive that we had during<br />

the week of November 16th -<br />

20th.<br />

We had boxes located in<br />

the lobby and what a thrill it<br />

was to see them being filled<br />

each day. It was a HUGE success!<br />

We divided the food up and<br />

delivered it to the Bethesda<br />

<strong>Paxtonia</strong> CONTACT everychild. onevoice<br />

-Give children age-appropriate<br />

tasks for which they can be held<br />

accountable.<br />

-Don’t overwhelm children with<br />

too many responsibilities, too much<br />

responsibility results in failure<br />

which results in lack of motivation.<br />

Success and praise are great<br />

motivators.<br />

-Expect your child to be<br />

responsible; expectations can<br />

become self-fulfilling prophecies.<br />

-Allow your child to take<br />

responsibility for his/her actions.<br />

Saving your child from natural<br />

consequences will only further<br />

enable irresponsible behaviors.<br />

Ten percent of the dollars spent<br />

by our organization will be donated<br />

prepare them for their future.<br />

When children demonstrate<br />

responsibility it gives them a sense<br />

of pride and accomplishment. It is<br />

important to recognize and<br />

acknowledge when your child is<br />

being responsible.<br />

Giant A+ Rewards<br />

t is still not too late to<br />

School to your Giant BONUS-<br />

CARD. From October 5, 20<strong>09</strong> to<br />

March 14, 2010 you can help<br />

<strong>Paxtonia</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong> earn cash<br />

when you shop at Giant and use<br />

your BONUSCARD. This will not<br />

affect your other rewards<br />

programs such as the gas rewards<br />

and free turkey. You may<br />

designate as many as two schools<br />

to your BONUSCARD, but this<br />

must be done every fall. You can<br />

designate our school to your card<br />
