BASKETBALL
Match Reports
1st – This week Hale faced Scotch College the
defending Cup holders. While we were missing
one of our best and most experienced players,
Ryan Lim, due to football commitments. Scotch
was able to get out of the blocks fast, gaining a
ten point lead midway through the first quarter.
Hale was able to cut back the lead going into
quarter time due to the strong scoring from
Sam Bevan. The second quarter was executed
poorly by Hale. The lack of intensity and
awareness on the defensive end led to many
second chance points for Scotch. Scotch went
into half time with a close lead. After a good rev
up from Mr Stone, the boys were able to find
their game in the third quarter. Hale’s bench
performed strongly, giving Hale the lead going
into 3 quarter time. The fourth quarter started
and Scotch regained the lead which they had for
the majority of the game. To Hale’s credit, the
boys were able to lift their game defensively
and force Scotch into turning the ball over
which led to transition baskets. In the end,
Scotch held on to win the game 56-45.

BASKETBALL
Match Reports
2nd – This was an incredibly close game throughout. It was a torrid contest from the beginning with both teams being very evenly
matched. The on-ball pressure was significant with no team able to nail home an advantage. Ben Carey, Lachie Martinis, Lucas
Francis were prolific on the score sheet as always and kept us in the contest. This was Josh Hopkinson’s first game with us and he
did superbly well gathering in defensive boards to give us possession of the ball at crucial moments. Jack Webb rolled his ankle in
the second quarter and limped from the court leaving us a vital man down. Alex Williams stepped up and was the hero of the day.
With 10 seconds remaining, scores were level and in the dying moments, Alex put the shot up to score right on the siren giving us
the win. The Scotch boys were very gracious in defeat and congratulated all on an exciting game.
4th – This Hale kept their impressive unbeaten run alive with a solid 35-13 win against Scotch College. The final score does not
reflect how tough the game was. The final foul count was Scotch 23, Hale 7. This is an indication of how Hale drove to the basket on
every occasion and how well they fought to maintain possession.
Last minute changes to the team and illness reduced our numbers to 7 fit players yet, once again, Hale's superior aerobic fitness saw
us run the game out in style. The quality of basketball on display increases every week.
The challenge now is to go through the season undefeated which is a distinct possibility given only two games remain.

BASKETBALL
Match Reports
8b - The 8B’s had a commanding 31-5 win over a solid Scotch team in our last game. The boys played an excellent game, our best for
the season, and all players contributed for a fine 4 quarter effort. Our team structure was good at both ends of the court.
Offensively we played a good passing game, to open up the opposition. All players played their role in this regard, with passes and
screens set up in good combinations. Our offensive rebounding was far stronger also, and resulted in numerous second
opportunities. On defence we were much better organised and the end result is reflective of excellent team pressure. We pressed
our opponents where we could and managed to kick start our offense with some easier baskets also. It was a very even
performance by the team, however Andrew Briggs played particularly well in his role and Henry (CJ) Carrington-Jones and Lachie
Southam controlled the point guard position confidently. Well done boys!

Match Reports
1 st XI – Despite heavy rain the day before the game, play started only 90 minutes late, thanks to a tremendous effort from the Hale
grounds staff in getting the wicket ready. Scotch had little hesitation in sending Hale in to bat after winning the toss.
It was a difficult wicket to adjust to, and at one stage the Hale total was 6 for 67. However, Theo Stapleton, batting lower in the order
for this game, and Joshua May batted superbly, with Stapleton taking full toll of any loose bowling. Their partnership realised 75 runs,
and was followed by some useful late order stands in taking the total to 223.
In reply, Scotch struggled early, and just prior to tea the score was 9/70. Ben Massey bowled beautifully early, picking up two vital
Scotch wickets. Liam Gallagher showed that he was back in form, picking up three quick wickets prior to the tea break. Drew Watson
and Aden Wilkins were yet again very consistent and economical. A last wicket stand of 82 threatened to deprive Hale of a victory,
before Wilkins captured the final wicket with only four overs remaining.
Match Reports
2nd XI – Matt Nick Fijac was promoted to play his first game,
whilst Will Morris was recalled from the Third XI.
The Hale Second XI won the toss and sent Scotch in after heavy
rain had fallen 36 hours earlier. A strong wind made bowling
difficult and Hale was not particularly penetrating in the early
part of the innings. Brayden Hayes bowled well in his second
spell to take 3/29, as did Toby Morris to take key wickets close
to lunch. Matt Blake helped to keep the scoring to a subdued
rate. After lunch Hale bowled Scotch out for a modest 140.
Marcus Tsaknis was dynamic in the field at cover, effecting a
couple of run outs.
With a small total to chase, Hale stumbled early, losing Jack
Taylor without scoring and Matt Blake for 9. Sam Reed batted
steadily to make 25 before Tsaknis joined Aitken at the crease.
Increasing the batting tempo, Tsaknis and Aitken added a vibrant
49 runs for the 4th wicket, putting Hale well within reach of the
Scotch total. Aitken guided Hale to the cusp of victory making a
patient but vital 66 runs. With 2 runs required for victory, Hale
suffered a late order collapse, just passing the Scotch total with
2 wickets in hand. Scotch finished the game on top, despite
losing the game. Without Will Aitken’s contribution of 66 in
Hale’s total of 150, Hale may have suffered an embarrassing
defeat.
Sam Reed plays watchfully during his innings of 25.

Match Reports
3rd XI – The It was never going to be easy for the Hale Thirds coming up against a quality outfit in the Aquinas Seconds. After the
week before where there were 8 dropped catches, fielding was a major priority for the Thirds in order to maximize their chances.
Indeed, Coach Will promised “major changes” in the team list, with every boy training hard to ensure they got a place in the
prestigious team. The end result was popular Vice-Captain Nick Fijac getting a nod to the Hale Seconds, and five coming down to the
Thirds, including team favourite, Jake Taylor.
Playing up a grade on a foreign pitch gave the boys a great challenge in their cricket journey. The weather was perfect for cricket,
and the sun beat down on both sides. The pitch was still quite damp from the rain the day before, and it favoured the team who
bowled first. Clearly, this pitch would require careful, concentrated batting, as the ball could easily slide and skid onto the wicket.
The boundary line was also quite short, exciting big-hitters Lewis Roe and Layuren Moodley. Moreover, the outfield was lightning, if
the ball beat the fieldsman, it was going for a boundary. With all these factors in mind, the Aquinas Captain won the toss over
Captain Dan Smailes and put the Hale boys into bat.
Hale’s batting effort looked fairly shaky from the outset. Veteran opener David Bushell popped one up to square-leg for a golden
duck and soon the top and middle order collapsed. Regan Smith top scored with 36 runs. However, no one else made a score above
20. The Aquinas bowlers were very accurate, disciplined and bowled to a plan, not giving the Thirds an inch or any room to get
going.
The Hale bowling was for the most part decent. Seconds regular, Sam Holden bowled the maximum six (1 for 17) and kept a solid
line and length. He was the best of our bowlers and economical to. Even though Aquinas reached the total by about the 16 over
mark, the Hale boys held their catches and fielded very well.
This was a good learning experience for the boys, especially the display of sound bowling. The Mighty Hale Thirds are looking
forward to their official fixture against rivals Trinity College away next week.
Match Reports
10a – The 4th round of the PSA fixture for the Hale 10A boys held a tough
challenge, as they were up against a strong-willed Scotch outfit, which
were hungry for a win. Once again, Hale won the toss, and elected to bowl
first on a pitch that was slightly affected by the heavy rain on Thursday. A
strong start by the Scotch openers led to no wickets being taken in the first
session, but the Hale boys regrouped, With Cameron Quenby taking 3
wickets in the space of 3 overs, with two of them coming from diving
catches from the wicket-keeper Hudson Delves. The Hale Boys fought on,
and managed to restrict Scotch to 9-173, with Cameron Quenby picking up
4 wickets in a very commendable bowling performance. After lunch, Hale
went into bat, confident of chasing down the required total set earlier in
the day. A solid start left Hale at 2/98, and victory was in our sights.
Unfortunately, the middle order crumbled, and Hale was left well short,
being bowled out for 145. Another good outing for Daniel Moore, who
notched up 52, before being involved in a messy run-out with a fellow
team mate. The boys were disappointed with the loss, but they are hoping
for a win next week against a so far unsuccessful Trinity side.
Match Reports
8a - After finally winning the toss and batting for the first time this year, Hale lost two early wickets but quickly steadied thanks to
solid contributions from Sravan Sivashanker and Matt Spoors, recovering to be 3/49 at drinks. Quick runs were required after the
break but not found, and it was this ten over block that would eventually cost us the game. Despite some great last over heroics
from James Haskis, taking 23 from the last 6 balls of the innings, 110 was always going to be hard work to defend. Rylie Morgan
kept us in the hunt with a superb four over spell, but too many wides and run scoring deliveries were costly from some of our other
bowlers. The spinners put the pressure back on the batsmen, as did Shaun Tatlow, and with 3 overs left we thought we could stop
them getting the required 24 runs. This was not the case, however, and a combination of poor bowling and fielding saw Scotch get
home with three balls to spare. It was a disappointing end to a very good game of cricket, with the momentum swinging both ways
at various stages of the game. Although the boys will be disappointed with the loss, overall they played well and Scotch were simply
the better team on the day. Trinity at home next week should hopefully see us back on the winner’s list.
8b – Scotch 74 defeated Hale 66
Willis 15 retired, East 13 not out, Haywood 11 and Milton 10.
Match Reports
3rd – The Hale Tennis 3rds had a tough match this weekend, coming up against
a strong Scotch outfit that were yet to lose a match. Luckily we didn’t know
that, as our top order came on to court and enjoyed some comfortable
victories, but a strong Scotch lower order narrowed the difference between the
sides with Hale only ahead by two sets. After the much needed break, the top
two doubles (Clark/Buckley, Denemark/Connolly) fought out hard matches to
give Hale the last four sets to secure a tight victory over a spirited Scotch team.
Special mention goes to Matthew Burke and Hayden Winmar who went down
in incredibly close matches and gave their all. Good job boys and good luck for
next weekend.
8a – The 8A’s tennis team had a very tough day at Scotch. They fought hard, but
still lost 110 to 44. Most of the games were quite close. We even saw 2 of our
player winning one. Congratulation to Theo and Isaac with Hale’s only win.
While it was still a loss in the end some people played their best tennis. Callan
had a close match ending with 6-6 and Alistair just missing out with 5-6. The
star player was Isaac as he contributed with our winning match and had a very
close singles match, drawing again at 6-6. From this match we gather that we
aren’t the only big fish out there and we will be prepared for Scotch next time
we verse them.

WATERPOLO
Match Reports
3rd – A warm Saturday morning saw the mighty 3rds travel to Scotch in an attempt to continue their unbeaten run this season. After
a strong performance last week the boys were looking to build on that win and achieve the team goal of improving each week.
Although the game was rather one sided, with Hale running in a 18 to 4 win, we attacked well and defended superbly. Defence was
key to keeping Scotch to such a low score and building the pressure on them to allow us to hit the back of the net. Mr Hunt described
the win as “the best we have played to date.” Another strong performance by Year 10 goalie Simon Bishop must be noted, along
with a lot of the other younger boys stepping up, giving us faith that the future of Hale water polo is in good hands. The efforts of the
older boys, including 6 goals by Co-captain Bob Shipway must not go unrecognised. All in all it was a great team performance and one
we were all very satisfied with. With the decommissioning of the Hale pool, training is sure to be a little different this week but I am
sure we will be able to maintain fitness and turn up ready next Saturday for another hit out.
