ABSTRACT<br />

The main goal of the project is the development of efficient numerical methods to solve the Maxwell<br />

equations in order to calculate the optical properties of two-dimensional periodic grating structures<br />

rigorously.<br />

The structures shall be optimized for broad-band absorption of both polarizations in thin films.<br />

This optimization should take into account the experimental requirements and limitations. Prototype<br />

structures will be fabricated with e-beam lithography by the Laboratory for Micro- and Nanotechnology<br />

at PSI, while experimental characterisation of the structures, as well as prototype solar cell fabrication<br />

will be done by the Institute of Microtechnology in Neuchâtel.<br />
