The monolithic tandem device reached an initial power conversion efficiency of 9.9%. The open circuit<br />

potential is close to the sum of the potentials of the top and bottom cell, clearly demonstrating the existence<br />

of a series-connected double junction. However, the performance of the tandem device degrades<br />

within hours. Analysis of the degradation mechanism is currently in progress. In order to further<br />

optimize the device conducting oxides with better transparency will be employed.<br />

The goal of this year’s workshop entitled “A look inside solar cells” was to provide tutorial lectures from<br />

world renowned experts in the various fields of thin film photovoltaics (Monte Verità, November 16 th to<br />

18 th 2008). The prestigious panel of speakers comprised Prof. L:M: Peter, Prof. M. Burgelman, Prof. R.<br />

Janssen, Dr. T. J: Coutts as well as Prof. B. Rech. Furthermore, a full day was reserved for student<br />

presentations and posters. About 60 scientists, mostly students, participated in the event.<br />

National / international collaborations<br />

The project benefit from the numerous individual contacts and collaborations of the partners.<br />

Collaboration with the theoretical modelling group at the Institute of Computational Physics at ZHAW<br />

was intensified this year.<br />
