<strong>OLD</strong> BIBLES AND BOOKS<br />

belonged to Bishop Wilson containing<br />

notes in his own hand-writing.<br />

John Foxe was born at Boston, Lincolnshire,<br />

and was educated at Oxford, where<br />

he became a fellow of Magdalen College,<br />

remaining till 1545, when he left on<br />

account of his strong Protestant views.<br />

He was ordained a priest in 1560 and<br />

became Canon of Salisbury in 1563. He<br />

is chiefly famous as the author of the work<br />

known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs, which<br />

greatly influenced the progress of Protestantism<br />

in England, and was consequently<br />

bitterly opposed by the Roman Catholics.<br />

The book was printed in 1562-63 by<br />

John Daye, of London. The copy at<br />

Burton has unfortunately<br />

lost its title<br />

page, but John Daye's name appears at<br />

the end of the volume. It is a first<br />

edition, printed in Black Letter, and<br />

bound in leather with brass corners.<br />

There is also the brass attachment for the<br />

chain.<br />
