<strong>OLD</strong> PEWS AND PULPITS IN<br />

WIRRAL CHURCHES.<br />

Compact of timber many a load,<br />

Such as our ancestors did use<br />

Was metamorphosed into pews;<br />

Which still their ancient nature keep<br />

By lodging folks disposed to sleep-"<br />

From Swift's " Baucis and Philemon."<br />

IN early days, when <strong>Wirral</strong> churches<br />

were first founded, pews had not <strong>com</strong>e<br />

into existence, and the worshippers stood<br />

or knelt on a hard damp floor of clay or<br />

stone, though a stone bench in some instances<br />

might be against the north, south<br />

and west walls. The porch, however, was<br />

always provided with seats so that those<br />

who came from a distance might enjoy a<br />

rest before service.<br />
