St. Andrew has always been a very<br />

popular dedication, and Lower Bebington<br />

church is but one of 637 in this<br />

country which are dedicated to him, a mark<br />

of favour due more to the legendary<br />

material that has gathered round his name<br />

than to the Scriptural narrative. The<br />

story goes that, after the gift of tongues<br />

at the feast of Pentecost, the Apostles<br />

drew lots to decide the places to which<br />

each should be sent, and it fell to the<br />

lot of St. Matthew that he should<br />

go to Wrondon, or the City of Dogs,<br />

whither he departed. There he was cast<br />

into prison and sentenced to be executed<br />

at the expiration of thirty days, but dur-<br />

ing his imprisonment the Lord Christ<br />

appeared to him and promised to send St.<br />

Andrew to his succour.<br />

Twenty-seven days afterwards, Our<br />

Lord called St. Andrew and his <strong>com</strong>panions<br />

and took them away in a ship, the<br />

crew whereof consisted of Christ Himself<br />

and two angels. They landed at Wrondon<br />

and proceeded to the prison, where<br />

the jailors fell dead, with the result that<br />

St. Matthew and the other prisoners were<br />
