Having discovered the dedication of any<br />

church, one is instantly faced with the<br />

interesting problem as to the reasons for<br />

the choice. This presents many difficul-<br />

ties and at best can often only be guesswork.<br />

No one, for example, appears to<br />

know why the Parish church of Neston is<br />

dedicated to St. Helen and St. Mary.<br />

members is usually apparent. Thus many<br />

churches are dedicated to the Blessed<br />

Virgin and Child, and three churches in<br />

England are dedicated to St. Helen and<br />

the Invention of the Cross. Occasionally<br />

the <strong>com</strong>pound form is due to the union of<br />

two parishes. Possibly that at Neston<br />

was originally to St. Helen alone, and St.<br />

Mary was added in order to obtain further<br />

and more potent intercession.<br />

In the case of Burton and Shotwick<br />

Parish churches the geographical situation<br />

has undoubtedly determined their dedica-<br />

tion, for the former is dedicated to St.<br />

Nicholas, the patron saint of ships and<br />

sailors, reminding us that Burton was<br />
