commitment. In fact, <strong>the</strong> Democrats are only marg<strong>in</strong>ally more responsive<br />

to such “special <strong>in</strong>terests” than <strong>the</strong> Republicans; ra<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> party is<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ated by o<strong>the</strong>r sectors of <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess and f<strong>in</strong>ancial communities.<br />

But <strong>the</strong>ir slightly greater responsiveness to <strong>the</strong> population at large makes<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> party of <strong>the</strong> “special <strong>in</strong>terests.”<br />

Notice that <strong>the</strong> term<strong>in</strong>ology makes a good deal of sense <strong>in</strong> a capitalist<br />

democracy, where <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terests of owners and managers are <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

“general <strong>in</strong>terests” that must be satisfied or <strong>the</strong> society will gr<strong>in</strong>d to a<br />

halt. The general population, however, is irrelevant except <strong>in</strong>sofar as it<br />

serves <strong>the</strong> needs of private power, and <strong>the</strong>refore constitutes “special<br />

<strong>in</strong>terests.” 18<br />

1.4 The Attack aga<strong>in</strong>st Independent Thought<br />

The bus<strong>in</strong>ess classes also moved effectively to extend <strong>the</strong>ir already<br />

massive dom<strong>in</strong>ance over universities and <strong>the</strong> media—always deemed<br />

<strong>in</strong>adequate, as bus<strong>in</strong>ess constantly compla<strong>in</strong>s. This phase of <strong>the</strong><br />

campaign <strong>in</strong>cluded publications for <strong>the</strong> general public and <strong>in</strong><br />

universities, where well-funded reactionary j<strong>in</strong>goist (“conservative”)<br />

journals are now widespread <strong>in</strong> an effort to counter threats of <strong>in</strong>tellectual<br />

<strong>in</strong>dependence at <strong>the</strong> source. The general idea was succ<strong>in</strong>ctly expressed<br />

by Walter Wriston, chairman of Citicorp and a fund-raiser for <strong>the</strong><br />

American Enterprise Institute: “I write <strong>the</strong> songs <strong>the</strong> world s<strong>in</strong>gs.” 19 No<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r melodies are to be heard.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> lunatic fr<strong>in</strong>ge we have such organizations as Accuracy <strong>in</strong><br />

Academia, a sp<strong>in</strong>off of <strong>the</strong> reactionary thought-control organization<br />

Accuracy <strong>in</strong> Media (AIM), which monitors <strong>the</strong> media for deviations from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Party L<strong>in</strong>e. The new offshoot alleges that <strong>the</strong>re are 10,000 Marxist<br />

professors on campus (where “Marxist,” <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir terms, <strong>in</strong>cludes people
