from fascist Spa<strong>in</strong>, where his US advisor described him with great<br />

admiration as “a gentleman of Victorian knighthood.” The top figure was<br />

Hans Ulrich Rudel, former Luftwaffe air ace, who had close personal<br />

and bus<strong>in</strong>ess relations with dictators Stroessner <strong>in</strong> Paraguay and<br />

P<strong>in</strong>ochet <strong>in</strong> Chile.<br />

In 1982 a new Bolivian government sent Barbie back to France,<br />

where he will come to trial unless he mysteriously dies <strong>in</strong> prison;<br />

collaboration with <strong>the</strong> Nazis was so widespread <strong>in</strong> France that many<br />
