one was look<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong>y could get away with it, and that <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

not torture and murder <strong>in</strong> pursuit of personal ga<strong>in</strong> merely on <strong>the</strong> grounds<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y are too powerful to suffer retaliation for <strong>the</strong>ir crimes. If <strong>the</strong><br />

people <strong>the</strong>y address were to learn <strong>the</strong> truth about <strong>the</strong> actions <strong>the</strong>y<br />

support or passively tolerate, <strong>the</strong>y would not permit <strong>the</strong>m to proceed.<br />

Therefore, we must live <strong>in</strong> a world of lies and fantasies, under <strong>the</strong><br />

Orwellian pr<strong>in</strong>ciple that Ignorance is Strength.<br />

The real victims of “America’s agony” are millions of suffer<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

tormented people throughout much of <strong>the</strong> Third World. Our highly<br />

ref<strong>in</strong>ed ideological <strong>in</strong>stitutions protect us from see<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir plight and our<br />

role <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g it, except sporadically. If we had <strong>the</strong> honesty and <strong>the</strong><br />

moral courage, we would not let a day pass without hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> cries of<br />

<strong>the</strong> victims. We would turn on <strong>the</strong> radio <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g and listen to <strong>the</strong><br />

voices of <strong>the</strong> people who escaped <strong>the</strong> massacres <strong>in</strong> Quiché prov<strong>in</strong>ce and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Guazapa mounta<strong>in</strong>s, and <strong>the</strong> daily press would carry front-page<br />

pictures of children dy<strong>in</strong>g of malnutrition and disease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> countries<br />

where order reigns and crops and beef are exported to <strong>the</strong> American<br />

market, with an explanation of why this is so. We would listen to <strong>the</strong><br />

extensive and detailed record of terror and torture <strong>in</strong> our dependencies<br />

compiled by Amnesty International, Americas Watch, Survival<br />

International, and o<strong>the</strong>r human rights organizations. But we successfully<br />

<strong>in</strong>sulate ourselves from <strong>the</strong> grim reality. By so do<strong>in</strong>g, we s<strong>in</strong>k to a level<br />

of moral depravity that has few counterparts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> modern world, and<br />

we may be lay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> basis for our own eventual destruction as well.<br />
