What Are All of These Disaster Codes?
A Primer on ACH Response
Arkansas Children’s Hospital uses several emergency alerts, known as codes, to notify
staff, patients and visitors about extraordinary situations. These situations may include tornadoes,
community disasters or suspected fires somewhere on the campus. The hospital
has printed each of these codes on the back of your identification badge, making it easy for
you to find them. You can also find out more information about codes in your red safety
manual or on the right of the MyACH web page. Do you know all of your codes?
• Dr. Red – Fire
• Code Adam – Missing Child
• Code Blue – Medical Emergency
• Code Tango – Tornado (but soon changing simply to Tornado Warning)
• Code Echo – Internal Disaster (loss of major services like utilities, phones, etc.)
• Code Green – External Disaster (example: a bus accident)
A Code Green may be activated at different levels depending on the nature of the
incident. For instance, a Level 1 is activated for informational purposes only, such as after
a tornado has affected a community but we have yet to receive any patients. The Hospital
Command Center does not always open at this level. Administrators may issue a Level 2
whenever the hospital is notified that patients are being transported to us. However, we
typically do not ask off-duty staff to return to the hospital at this level. The calling of a Level
2 typically means the Hospital Command Center is open. Whenever a major incident occurs
and the hospital is greatly affected, ACH may activate a Level 3. The Hospital Command
Center is then fully staffed in order to support each department and unit and off-duty personnel
may be asked to return to the hospital to help. Right now, only external emergencies
have different levels, but this could soon change as we update disaster procedures.
Many team members have contacted Safety lately about Code Spear, wanting to know
what it is and when it is activated. Rest assured, you do not need to learn a new disaster
code! Code Spear is the campus-wide disaster notification system that ACH purchased a few
years ago. The system is used to alert key staff members during these extraordinary situations.
We often test the system to ensure that it is working properly. If you are part of the
Code Spear system, you may receive notifications via phone, email or pager. However, it is
important to note that we do not currently have a system in place to notify in-house pagers.
It is very important that you not only understand the emergency codes, but also that
you know what to do when a code is activated. Each unit or department should have a red
safety manual that is easy to find and use. Do not just let them collect dust on the shelf!
Read the manuals and know what to do before an emergency occurs. Remember that you
can always refer to the back of your ACH identification badge for emergency information.
If you want to learn more about disasters, emergency management training classes,
or joining the First Receiver/Decontamination Team, please contact Doug Brown at
Here We Go! Fitness Challenge Kicks into High Gear
Jump! Walk! Run! Just get moving as part of the 2011 Blue and Your Fitness Challenge,
a program staged by BlueCross BlueShield. The competition began earlier this
month and will continue through May 31.
Each day participants perform 30 minutes of exercise, they move to virtual checkpoints
across America. To complete the challenge, participants should exercise 30 minutes
a day at least three times per week. ACH Team Champion Cindy Holland and the 12
ACH team captains are already setting a great example as we sail forward toward victory
in the competition against other Arkansas workplaces.
The best benefit of participating in the Fitness Challenge? Improving your health
with frequent physical activity! But team members who make at least 40 stops and complete
the program evaluation (equal to 30 minutes, three times per week), will receive
T-shirts at the end of the competition.
TraveL Light and Eat Right
with the ACH CapitoL Cafe
Looking for healthy meals under 400 calories? You’re in luck! The Capitol Café
is now offering a selection of light meals that will also qualify for points toward team
members’ Travel to Wellness journeys. Look for the “Travel Light, Eat Right” meals,
formerly called “Norton’s Portions.” Team members who buy and have five meals
verified can earn five TTW points.
Here’s how:
• Purchase the “Travel Light, Eat Right” meal in the cafeteria.
• When checking out, ask the cashier for the TTW card.
• The cashier will punch the card.
• Bring the card back with you and have it punched each time you purchase
another healthy meal.
• After five punches, you can either put the completed card in the drop box located
in the cafeteria or send it via inner office mail to slot No. 691.
• Earn five TTW points (for a maximum of 50 points per year earned through eating
the meals).
Getting to the Art of It All
The ACH Artists in Residence program enjoyed time in the spotlight in January ,
when it was featured during an art show. Works created by ACH patients and the artists
themselves were the focal point of a two-week gallery exhibit at the THEA Foundation in
North Little Rock. The creations of ACH patients and artists Hamid Ebrahimifar, Elizabeth
Weber and Laura Phillips were on display during the monthly Argenta Art Walk Night,
too!
James Installed as Beasley Chair in Pediatric Radiology
Dr. Charles James is the new holder of
the Lee Roy and Melba T. Beasley Endowed
Chair in Pediatric Radiology after a ceremony
in late February. Arkansas Children’s
Hospital and the University of Arkansas for
Medical Sciences installed Dr. James in the
position in front of an audience of his peers,
family and friends in Chairman’s Hall.
The endowed chair was made possible
by a $1 million gift from the Lee Roy and
Melba T. Beasley Foundation. Through this
chair, the generosity of the Beasley Foundation
will support research, education and
clinical care for the Pediatric Radiology Department
at ACH.
Endowed chairs are essential in recruiting and retaining the most talented medical
professionals. Holding an endowed chair at ACH is a professional honor and distinction
that represents the greatest recognition of professional achievement.
Dr. James is chief of Pediatric Radiology at ACH and a professor of radiology and
pediatrics at the UAMS College of Medicine.
Save the Date to Save a Life:
Blood Drive March 10-11
Blood donation is a critical need, and it affects many of the children in our care. Mark
your calendar for the next blood drive on the ACH campus, so that you can help save a life!
Thursday, March 10 and Friday, March 11 • 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sturgis Education Building, S120/S121
Please go online to redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment (enter the sponsor
code “ACH”). Among the benefits of registering online are that you will receive an e-mail
reminder prior to your appointment time, and your wait time will be shortened. If this
is your first time making an appointment, please create a profile first. Don’t forget to go
online at redcrossblood.org to record your points after you donate!
The Red Cross still has the NASCAR Racing Program. Visit redcrossracing.com to
schedule and report blood donations, view your points balance and exchange your points
for cool, one-of-a-kind racing gear.
Questions? Call ACH blood drive coordinator Janine Edwards at X41890.
Safety Situations: Avoiding Slips, Trips and Falls
It’s the stuff that slapstick cartoons are made of: slips, trips and
falls. But these are no laughing matter at Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
Basic slips, trips and falls make up many of the injuries that occur
among employees here every year. The best way to avoid these is to
know what causes them and how to steer clear of such injuries.
Common causes of slips, trips and falls:
• Wet or waxed floors;
• Carrying a load you can’t see around, as you and anyone you
bump into could easily fall;
• Climbing on stacked material; and
• Cluttered stairways and other areas that generally are not well lighted.
Ways to avoid slips, trips and falls:
• Take ownership and clean up spills because you never know who will turn the corner
and slip;
• Install adequate lighting;
• Use the correct ladder to get items down from above; and
• Practice good housekeeping and keep stairways and aisles free of clutter.
Talk about superstars! ACH’s staff is filled with talented team members, many of
whom rocked ACH’s Camp Wannaplay in February for ACH Idol. The “American Idol”style
singing competition pitted 15 employees against each other for a friendly contest
broadcast to computers across campus. They performed in front of a live audience of
children in the playroom and some even played their own instruments. Team members,
patients and families voted online in droves. Ultimately, the winner was Paige Wesson of
PalCare, who belted out “Temporary Home.” Congratulations to all who participated and
thanks to the many members of the ACH Community who watched and voted!
Hear Discovery Health’s Chief Medical
Correspondent on April 14
Dr. Pamela Peeke is issuing “A Call to Arms … and Legs!” That’s the title of her presentation
scheduled on April 14, from noon to 1 p.m. in Children’s Hall. All ACH team
members are invited to hear the keynote speech by this internationally renowned expert
in women’s health, fitness and nutrition. Chief medical correspondent for Discovery
Health TV and chief lifestyle expert for WebMD, Peeke is also The New York Times bestselling
author of Fit to Live. Her wit and passion, combined with a mastery of science and
medicine, have led Dr. Peeke to become one of the most requested physician speakers in
the nation. Team members and spouses are encouraged to attend this free lecture and
can bring their own brown bag lunches. Employees only need to register via the ACH
Training System.

Vital Signs Tags Along on Italian Excursion
Accounts Payable Coordinators Sue Nelson and Linda Kohrs recently ventured
to Italy for a week in Rome, and brought a copy of Vital Signs along for the trip. They
toured the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica, saw Trevi Fountain, and even
spotted the Pope. “He came down the street of our hotel, and we were arm’s length
from him,” Sue says. “We also went in the Pantheon, and it was awesome!” Before
they left, they mailed themselves postcards from the Vatican post office so a special
souvenir arrived when they returned.
Do you have interesting travel plans lined up for 2011? Take along a copy of
Vital Signs, snap a photo on location and send us the details! Just e-mail them to
the ACH lobby interviewing patients, parents, caregivers and supporters of the hospital,
in an effort to raise funds for ACH.
How can you help with the Champions for Children Radiothon?
• Volunteer in the phone bank.
Help us take donations and pledges by volunteering for a two-hour shift in the
Radiothon phone bank. To sign up, please contact Jessica Buckler in the ACH Foundation
at X41074.
• Become a Change Angel.
Collect change from friends and family members and donate the change to
ACH. It’s that easy! Each Change Angel who raises $100 or more will receive a T-shirt
ACH!
It’s hard to argue the point that print is dead when
you see how busy the Admin Support Services Department
at ACH stays. Copies, newly created documents
and loads of mail keep this team wading in important
papers on a daily basis.
“If you have a job you need completed, it never
hurts to ask us about it,” said Admin Support Services
Manager Tamara Hargrove. “You may think that something
sounds small-scale or outlandish, but chances are,
we can probably accomplish it!”
In fact, on a monthly basis the department completes
an average of 236 projects in its print shop and
handles 25,000 pieces of outgoing metered mail. They
also distribute pieces sent through inneroffice mail to
more than 200 departments, transport samples from
labs to the Circle of Friends and Adolescent Clinics, and
make deliveries to UAMS and the West Little Rock Clinic
twice daily. The department also provides a comprehensive
courier service that logs miles all across Central
Arkansas.
“We don’t bat an eye when someone asks us if we
can deliver just about anywhere in the area,” Hargrove
said. “We end up everywhere from Conway Regional
Hospital to the Lonoke County Courthouse.”
Admin Support Services completes these tasks
with a fleet of seven ACH team members, including
four couriers, a print shop tech, a secretary and the division’s manager.
The group has expanded its service range in the last year, and now provides industrial
cutting using a hydraulic machine that can slice a ream of paper in one shot, Hargrove
said.
The only projects the division currently charges for are vinyl posters.
The rapid pace at which the team must move to keep up with the flow of paper
across ACH can sometimes be a challenge. Just imagine trying to keep up with exactly
Hit the Road to Readiness to Prepare
for Joint Commission Survey
By now, the word is out that 2011 is a Joint Commission survey year for ACH! And, of
course, CMS (Medicaid/Medicare) and the State Department of Health can always stop
by for a visit at any time. So in an effort to keep us on the “Road to Readiness,” we have
a few new resources for you to access right now.
First, the 2011 Road to Readiness Survey Compliance Guide is complete and on its way
to your department. This guide – being printed in mass quantities for all staff – contains
summaries of the standards, what to expect during the survey and lots of readiness information.
Look for it in your area in the coming days!
Second, check out the new Road to Readiness link on the MyACH website. By clicking
that link, you will find access to all editions of the Beyond Status Quo newsletters, accreditation
standards, awareness and education posters and the new survey compliance
guide.
If you have questions or would like additional information, contact Jason Miller,
director of Accreditation at X43102 or millerjc@archildrens.org.
CVICU Honors Service of Jeremy Daniel
The CVICU team recently honored Jeremy
Daniel at a reception in the Cress Board
room for his 30 years of service at Arkansas
Children’s Hospital. During that time Jeremy
has been a dedicated employee providing excellent
care to the children of our state and
region.
Author Norman MacEwen once said,
“Happiness is not so much in having as sharing.
We make a living by what we get, but we
make a life by what we give”. As a member
of the CVICU team, Jeremy has dedicated his
working time at ACH to serving others and
sharing his talents to benefit the health and
wellness of the children of Arkansas.
In celebration of Jeremy’s 30 years of
service at ACH he received a beautiful heartshaped
plaque (pictured at right), which
serves to remind us all that the power of a
heart-filled community can be strong and farreaching.
Need to Cut, Print, Bind or Copy? Admin Support Services Does it All
where all of ACH’s more than 3,700 team members
work!
“Learning all the employees and departments is
hard,” said courier James Thompson. “It’s especially
challenging when employees change departments or
when teams move to new locations.”
But the department’s staff agree that working together
as a team keeps them going strong. They also
rely on laughter, which is plentiful in Admin Support’s
facility on 10th Street opposite the ACH Fitness
Center.
In the last year, the team has had plenty of chuckles
caused by a few little creatures who have dropped
in for visits.
“We seem to be an animal rescue center,” Hargrove
said. “We’ve had birds flying around, squirrels
that ran in and a wayward kitten, for whom we found
a wonderful home with a team member in IT!”
Hargrove attributes her team’s satisfaction to the
constant laughter.
“Laughing is an essential part of working and reducing
the stress involved!”
Sending a Project to Admin Support
If you’d like to check on whether Admin Support can assist your department with
a project, the best avenue is to e-mail an electronic file to adminsupport@archildrens.org.
If an electronic file is not available, you walk a copy over to the department’s location
on 10th Street. Files that are too large to e-mail can be placed on the K or Z drives, and
customers can e-mail directions for accessing them to the address above. Also feel free to
call the Print Shop with questions at X43683.
Congratulations
Kudos go out to the ACH Lactation team for recently being recognized by the International
Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and International Lactation Consultant
Association for excellence in lactation care. Team members received the IBCLC Care
Award in recognition of staffing International Board Certified Lactation Consultants and
for providing a lactation program that is available throughout the week for breastfeeding
families. In addition, the groups recognized ACH’s Lactation program for providing
breastfeeding training for medical staff that care for new families and for recently completing
activities that help protect, promote and support breastfeeding. Congratulations
to this hard-working team!
