Do bedbugs really bite
A bedbug enjoys feeding on human blood.
Night night, sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs
bite … The bad news is that, yes, bedbugs really
do bite! They commonly hide in mattresses and the
cracks in bed frames during the day, but crawl out
at night to feast on snoozing humans. The good
news is that bedbugs don’t transmit diseases and,
apart from leaving you with a few itchy patches,
if they bite you won’t feel a thing!
FACT FILE
Measuring up to just
5 mm (3 3 ⁄16 in.) in
length, it’s thought that
a bedbug can drink
around four times its
original body weight in
blood in just 15 minutes!
Do bugs use disguise
Many bugs use disguise to protect
themselves from predators, and
it’s easy to see how the thorn
bug got its name – after all,
no predator would like to eat
a sharp thorn. Thorn bugs
like to suck sap, so tend
to gather in groups on the
stems of plants, which makes
them look even more prickly!
What makes a stink bug stink
Put yourself in a stink bug’s shoes … there’s a big bird
about to pounce on you and gobble you up, and in a
matter of moments you’re going to be history – so
what would you do? You’d need to unleash a hidden
defence so you can live to see another day. That’s
exactly what a stink bug does. Its hidden defence is its
pong – phew. One whiff of this smelly perfume and
predators think twice!
A stink bug emits a nasty
smell to deter predators.
