4.1.4) Modern <strong>coffee</strong> plantati<strong>on</strong> (state farms and advanced investors)<br />

This system is the smallest producti<strong>on</strong> unit in Ethiopia. The plantati<strong>on</strong> is usually<br />

established <strong>on</strong> previously cleared lands. Some indigenous trees are allowed to stand in the<br />

field either to serve as shade or windbreak or both. The planting site is usually selected based<br />

<strong>on</strong> some standardized criteria according to the <strong>coffee</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>mental requirements, by a <strong>coffee</strong><br />

expert team. Planting materials are obtained from a superior mother tree in all producti<strong>on</strong><br />

comp<strong>on</strong>ents, seedlings are produced under a well managed nursery. It follows an appropriate<br />

way of site preparati<strong>on</strong>, planting method, young plantati<strong>on</strong> maintenance, bearing-tree<br />

maintenance, harvesting and processing. Generally, it is the producti<strong>on</strong> system which is<br />

guided by plan and programme of producti<strong>on</strong>. These plantati<strong>on</strong>s are said modern because all<br />

inputs and practices are used, and washeries owned.<br />

The state farms which are found in <strong>Limu</strong> woredas stand also in Bebeka, Teppi and<br />

Arbagugu. The total area occupied by these plantati<strong>on</strong>s is approximately 20 000 ha which<br />

accounts <strong>on</strong>ly 3-5% of the total <strong>coffee</strong> producti<strong>on</strong> in the country.<br />
