Commercial and ec<strong>on</strong>omic aspects<br />

Descripti<strong>on</strong> at the local, regi<strong>on</strong>al level: <strong>Coffe</strong>e farmers have two possibilities to sell<br />

their <strong>coffee</strong>. They can send it to the OCFCU, through <strong>Limu</strong> Genet member cooperatives. The<br />

<strong>coffee</strong> is the identified as Limmu <strong>coffee</strong> and sold as such to the nati<strong>on</strong>al and internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

levels. They can also sell it to private traders and investors then can either go themselves to<br />

the aucti<strong>on</strong> or sell it <strong>on</strong> Jima market, where it is mixed with other provenances and sold as<br />

“Jima <strong>coffee</strong>”.<br />

Descripti<strong>on</strong> at the nati<strong>on</strong>al level: Included within the Jima province and sold <strong>on</strong> the<br />

domestic market (sun dried <strong>coffee</strong>)<br />

Descripti<strong>on</strong> at the internati<strong>on</strong>al level: <strong>Limu</strong> washed <strong>coffee</strong> has a cup profile and an<br />

Ethiopian standard and the main part is exported.<br />

Evoluti<strong>on</strong> of producti<strong>on</strong> and commercialisati<strong>on</strong>: There is high increase of producti<strong>on</strong><br />

and market demand for this <strong>coffee</strong>. However a new tendency emerges at the internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

level.<br />

Labels and other signs of quality: Cup profile and Ethiopian standard for <strong>Limu</strong> washed<br />

<strong>coffee</strong>. No official sign of quality for Lim sun dried <strong>coffee</strong>.<br />

Needs for implementati<strong>on</strong> of a GI system:<br />

Descripti<strong>on</strong>: <strong>Limu</strong> farmers try to obtain a better recogniti<strong>on</strong> for their <strong>coffee</strong> and<br />

especially to prevent other <strong>coffee</strong> provenances from being mixed with theirs and sold under<br />

<strong>Limu</strong>.<br />
