(SJPD) was Jan. 20, 1989, 

when a routine call of a disturbance 

in San Jose turned 

into a bloody cat-and-mouse 

shootout that claimed the 

lives of two police officers 

and the gunman. 

San Jose Police Officer 

Gene Simpson, 45, died 

instantly after Randy 

Connors, 35, a mentally ill 

man, stalked him and shot 

him in the head with his own 

gun. Connors also killed a 

second officer, Gordon Silva, 

39, shooting him in the stomach 

and leg. 

Backup officers, who 

swarmed to the scene on East 

Santa Clara Street near Fifth 

Street had no choice but to 

kill Connors, who was shot 

three times through the 

heart. Simpson and Silva 

were the first San Jose police 

officers to die in the line of 

duty since July 1985 when 

another officer was also shot 

to death with his own gun. 

Police authorities are saying 

fear of this happening 

again is what sometimes 

leads to the tragic officerinvolved 

shootings in which 

those suffering from mental 

disabilities or emotional 

problems lose their lives in 

violent altercations with the 

police. 

“We’ve had instances in 

which they assault the officers, 

take their guns and kill 

them,” said San Jose 

Independent Police Auditor 

Teresa Guerrero-Daley. 

After the officer-involved 

shooting of Bosnian immigrant 

Zaim Bojcic, 40, on 

Sunday, Sept. 26, the case is 

being reviewed by the San 

Jose Police Department’s 

Homicide Unit, which will 

then be reviewed by the 

Santa Clara County District 

Attorney’s Office. 

Grand jury to decide 

A criminal grand jury will 

convene to determine if 

there’s enough evidence to 

have San Jose Police Officer 

Donald Guess stand trial for 

Bojcic’s death, or if the

Walk into Jerry’s Barber Shop and you 

go back in time to the wholesomeness 

of the 1950s, when neighbors uttered 

more than a simple “hello” to each other and 

the slower paced lifestyle allowed people to 

place personal service over convenience. 

Jerry’s is a place of refuge from the hustle 

and bustle of everyday life. He takes walk-ins 

only, which means that people might have to 

wait, but the customers don’t seem to mind. 

They enjoy hearing the local gossip and talking 

to Jerry Bershers, shop owner, and the other 

barbers about a wide range of topics.

Robert Nelson, a retired Pioneer High School 

coach, likes the “personalities and relaxed 

atmosphere.” Everyone in the shop is friendly 

and you can “talk about sports, other coaches 

and Campbell.” Customers greet each other 

and Jerry like old friends, and many of them 

are. Jerry asks about their families and they 

trade humorous stories about other customers. 

The shop’s walls are covered with photos of 

local athletic teams and pictures of faithful 

customers. Jerry supports the local teams, so 

the teams give Jerry framed photographs as a 

token of appreciation. Jason Miller, dean of 

Westmont High School, pointed out his picture 

as Jerry finished up his flattop. 

Miller has been coming to Jerry’s for 30 

years. He got his first haircut here, and he has 

been coming ever since. He was “unfaithful” to

Jerry only once, and he really 

regretted it. 

“Most of the guys have been 

coming here since they were 

kids,” Jerry noted. 

As the afternoon faded into 

evening, customers continued to 

pour in, seeking shelter from the 

rain, a superb haircut and above 

all, an amiable conversation in 

the shop’s friendly atmosphere. 

Jerry’s is “more like a downhome 

style instead of an assembly-line 

haircut and you can 

come in and talk,” said David 

Haynes, a faithful customer who 

has been coming to Jerry’s for 15- 

20 years. 

Tradition in the face of rapid 

change 

Jerry sports an “Elvis” hairstyle. 

“I got stuck in the 50s and 

I just never changed,” he 

explained. “I don’t like change.” 

Jerry’s traditional barbershop, 

which contains an old-fashioned 

jukebox, has changed very little 

over the years. He did buy a 

modern cash register, though. 

“We’re high-tech now,” he joked. 

Outside the shop, a red, white 

and blue barber pole adds to the 

historic qualities of the establishment. 

In the past, the red and 

white stripes symbolized that 

medical service was also available, 

for the white-shirted barbers 

also performed medical procedures. 

When asked if he had 

ever done any medical work, 

Jerry laughed, “I stopped using 

leaches a few years ago.” The 

blue stripe was added in the 

1800s for a more patriotic look. 

Campbell has changed drastically 

over the years, but it hasn’t 

changed Jerry’s. Customers agree 

that Jerry’s is the one constant in 

this constantly changing city. For

example, while other places stay 

open late, Jerry closes at 6 p.m. 

But his refusal to adapt to the 

modern, fast-paced lifestyle hasn’t 

hurt his business. In fact, it 

may have helped. Working people 

leave work early just to come 

to Jerry’s and enjoy the warm, 

relaxing atmosphere. Daytime 

customers are often retired men 

and off-shift workers, such as 

members of the police and fire 

departments. 

The shop opened in 1961. 

Jerry started working there in 

1965 and by 1969, he owned it. 

At first, there were four gas stations 

and a few shops and restaurants 

here and there, but nothing 

to really draw people to the 

town. In fact, people thought 

Jerry’s decision to have a barbershop 

in “the middle of nowhere” 

was a bit risky. “How are you 

going to draw in customers?” 

they would ask. 

Soon, Kirkwood Plaza opened 

and everyone started coming in. 

The construction of the shops at 

the Pruneyard was also a big 

help, as well as the festivals put 

on by the Chamber of 

Commerce, the farmer’s market 

and downtown Campbell’s 

“facelift,” which included a twoway 

street and more well-established 

shops, such as Orchard 

Valley Coffee. 

Coach Nelson added that when 

he moved here 30 years ago, 

Campbell was covered with 

orchards. They were replaced 

with buildings, and the development 

of the freeway connected 

this centrally located town to the 

larger towns and cities of the Bay 

Area. 

Jessie Ruan, one of Jerry’s barbers, 

estimated that Jerry’s 

Barber Shop now performs 5,000 

haircuts per year. “We have 

enough customers to keep us 

going,” said Jerry. 

Artistic beginnings 

While Jerry is soft-spoken, 

modest and seems to enjoy listening 

to the stories of others 

more than talking about himself, 

his customers enjoy bragging 

about his talents. They point to 

several beautiful oil paintings of 

Native Americans and horses 

hanging on the walls. “Jerry’s an 

artist,” they explained proudly. 

They were also quick to point 

out that Jerry is a musician as 

well. He used to play the guitar 

locally, which is how he met 

singer and songwriter Don 

McLean, who was in town to do 

the play “Hair” in San Francisco. 

McLean was responsible for the 

huge 70s hit “Bye, Bye Miss 

American Pie.” Some of the 

locals introduced them and a few 

days later, McLean came in for a 

haircut. 

Jerry has set aside his guitar 

and paintbrushes and now 

chooses to spend his free time 

riding his horse, a thoroughbred 

whose official name is Royal Fox. 

Jerry prefers to call him Buddy. 

“It seems less formal,” he 

explained. 

It would appear natural for 

someone with Jerry’s innate 

artistic talent to be drawn to a 

career as a barber, yet it was an 

unlikely chain of events that 

brought him to this profession. 

Originally from Oklahoma, Jerry 

served in the army, then moved 

to California to work as a migrant 

worker. He met a girl whose 

father did not approve of his profession, 

so at age 23, he chose to 

become a barber. “It was the only 

thing I could do that was clean,” 

he explained. 

But Jerry did not end up marrying 

that girl. Instead, he married 

a woman named Sharon in 

1977. Sharon was divorced when 

she took her son to Jerry’s shop 

to get a haircut. The two started 

talking and “one thing led to 

another.” He ended up taking her 

to a Mexican restaurant nearby. 

The restaurant closed long ago, 

but both the relationship and 

Jerry’s Barber Shop have 

endured.

Article on police shooting of 

Bosnian prompts racism and 

animosity towards the police 

Editor, 

I just got through reading the article Jennifer 

Robertson wrote about the shooting of the 

Bosnian immigrant (October issue). Everything 

she said was on “hearsay” and shouldn’t have 

been repeated and nothing written until the 

investigation is over. All this input is only making 

the public “think” police brutality was the 

answer. 

I’m sorry this young man had to die, but I 

don’t think an officer would shoot and kill him 

for no reason? Once the facts are found, THEN 

something can be written. This is only promoting 

animosity toward the police and prompting 

racism. It could’ve been anyone, but because he 

was Bosnian, there’s way, way too much animosity 

building.

The tragic shooting of a Bosnian immigrant 

with a mental health disability highlights the desperate 

need for mental health training and support 

for Silicon Valley police officers. Proper 

training increases opportunities to deescalate a 

situation before it turns violent and decreases the 

likelihood that police will use deadly force to subdue 

a person with a mental health disability. 

In this case the victim was doubly disadvantaged 

in that friends report he did not speak

Historical Museum’s Endowment

Wesley Manor senior home on 

Winchester Boulevard near 

Hamilton Avenue celebrated its 

25th anniversary on Oct. 8. The 

eight-story home has been serving 

the local Campbell senior and disabled 

community since 1979. 

Wesley Manor used the occasion to 

offer live music and a luncheon 

buffet. Over the years, the city and 

Wesley Manor have developed a

Save the planet: Don’t burn wood in 

fireplaces 

Editor, 

I read the article written by County Supervisor 

Jim Beall “The Case for Hydrogen” in the 

September issue of the Campbell Times and 

agree whole-heartedly that we need to do more 

to reduce air pollution in Santa Clara County. 

His suggestions for reducing air pollution by 

purchasing low emission vehicles and by replacing 

barbecues with gas grills are good ones. 

Another way of significantly reducing air pollution 

along these same lines is to simply not burn 

wood in fireplaces. 

Wood smoke from residential fireplaces contributes 

up to 43 percent (!) of wintertime air 

pollution in Santa Clara County. It is the number 

two source of dioxins released into the environment 

in California. One fireplace burning wood 

produces as many smoke particles as 3,000 

homes heated by gas furnaces. 

Virtually all residences in Santa Clara County 

have access to electricity or gas and thus there is 

no need to burn wood for heat. 

This presents absolutely the greatest opportunity 

to reduce air pollution in the Bay Area with 

no spending on infrastructure required. By what 

other means can we reduce air pollution by such 

an extent at so little cost? We do not allow people 

to pollute our air with poorly operating cars 

that would produce anything near the huge volumes 

of pollution that fireplaces do. It would be 

unthinkable. Why should we treat air pollution 

from fireplaces any differently?

Did you make it to downtown 

Campbell for the Oktoberfest? I sure 

hope you did, as a lot of fun was had 

by all. I want to thank the community for 

the large turn out, and most of all EVERY- 

ONE who volunteered to help at the festival. 

Without the support and help from the 

community, this festival or other festivals 

could not be produced. Saturday was the 

day to be there, it was not raining. If you 

were there on Sunday, then you got a free 

shower, and you did not get hot. Overall the 

Festival was a very good event. 

One of the things that is so neat about 

Campbell, is when you go downtown, you 

always see many friends and people you 

know. Campbell’s community and its “suburbs” 

always come out to support community 

events. We all thank you. 

Now plans are underway for the annual Campbell 

Community Toy Program. This will be Dec. 2 at the 

Campbell Community Center in the Orchard City Hall. It 

will start at 6 p.m. Gary Scott Thomas (from KRTY) and 

Carl San Miguel (Chamber president) will be the emcees. 

We will also have music by Nicole Cheri, plus lots of raffle 

prizes, appetizers, deserts, beverages and more. All 

money raised goes to help Santa bring the joy of 

Christmas to children who otherwise might not receive

Westmont High School 

held its Homecoming 

Parade on Oct. 29 in the 

Westmont Bowl before the varsity 

game. Previous years had seen 

the parade with it’s many floats, 

marching bands, football players 

and cheerleaders parading down 

the streets of downtown 

Campbell. But this year the 

Parade returned home to the 

The freshman float’s theme was “Freshmen to the Rescue.” 

Westmont Bowl and enthusiastic 

students, parents and teachers 

greeted the participants with 

applause. To top off an excellent 

evening, Westmont won the 

Homecoming game in a 20 to 8 

upset against Mount Pleasant.

objectivity until all the facts are in,” 

said Guerrero-Daley. 

San Jose Police Department 

spokesman Sgt. Steve Dixon said 

police officials are guarding their 

comments about the recent spike in 

officer-involved shootings because 

anything they say could be misconstrued 

by police watchdog groups 

as was done after the July 13, 2003 

deadly shooting of 25-year-old Bich 

Cau Thi Tran, a Vietnamese immigrant. 

“The main focus for us is the 

grand jury,” Dixon said, denying 

police officials said the Bojcic 

shooting was self-defense. “We can’t 

say that. It’s up to the grand jury to 

decide if it was self-defense and 

within the law.” 

San Jose Police Chief Rob Davis 

said the danger of having one of his 

officers lose his or her life in the 

line of duty to the hands of person 

who is suffering from mental illness 

or emotional problems is real and 

raw for the department because of 

the tragic loss of three previous officers. 

“They’re (officer-involved shootings) 

are difficult. They’re always 

tragic. We do everything we can to 

try to prevent them to the extent 

that we can,” Davis said. 

Many Bosnians live in 

Campbell, West San Jose 

Sonja Cvitanich, deputy director 

of the Eastern European Service 

Agency, said since Bojcic’s death, 

her organization has been working 

with the Bosnian community in the 

valley and in Campbell to build 

trust and organize forums to 

address concerns related to the 

shooting. 

“We want our community to get 

to know the police and for the 

police to get to know the community,” 

she said. “Zaim’s shooting was 

really devastating because he 

escaped persecution in Bosnia. This 

is a setback for us. As an agency 

we’ve always told them that the 

police are here to protect them. This 

didn’t need to happen.” 

Cvitanich also said the community 

is distrustful of Campbell Police 

officials, and that the agency has 

received many complaints of 

alleged officer-involved altercations 

with Bosnian refugees in Campbell. 

They cited the case of a man suffering 

from post-traumatic stress disorder 

who lost control at a family 

party after having too many drinks. 

According to Cvitanich, 

Campbell police entered the man’s 

home, didn’t allow the son to 

explain the situation, knocked the 

man down, broke furniture, arrested 

him and incarcerated him for 

five days without the presence of an 

interpreter. He was allegedly 

deprived of his medications. 

“There was no human aspect to 

it,” she said. “It’s like they don’t 

understand that they can get help 

from family members. They just 

jump to it and they don’t look at the 

situation. They’re acting like horses 

and are blindsided.” 

Cvitanich said police officers 

need to learn more about the community’s 

needs, traditions, difficulties 

and lifestyle. “We want them to 

understand that while something 

may seem different and wrong to 

them it may actually be right,” she 

said. 

About the Bojcic incident, 

Cvitanich repeated several times 

that his family wants justice. “For 

somebody smoking in front of a 

Starbucks to end up like this is just 

totally devastating,” she said. 

It’s estimated between 7,500 and 

10,000 Bosnian refugees live in the 

Santa Clara County area. Campbell 

is home to a large number of these 

immigrants.

Gullo says community wants justice 

“We want justice. The family 

wants justice. The community 

wants justice,” Cvitanich said.

hard to protect the rights of all citizens 

regardless of their ethnicity. 

He said when people break the law; 

officers have no choice but to arrest 

them. “We don’t seek anybody out, 

we just respond to calls for service 

from people. 

“If people want to complain 

about the police and their actions 

there’s a variety of mechanisms in 

the county to do that. We encourage 

them to do that,” Gullo said. 

“This job is difficult. One mistake 

we make in law enforcement is that 

we don’t explain that to people 

enough. Our customer wants us to 

be all things to all people and that’s 

not possible in any industry. We 

haven’t been clear enough about the 

difficulties of our job.” 

Gullo said many officers lose 

their lives in sudden violent domestic 

confrontations that sometimes 

turn dangerous. “No police officer 

wants to take a life. No police officer 

wants to be in that position. 

Decisions have to be made about 

protecting your life or the life of 

somebody else in a matter of seconds,” 

Gullo said. 

The Campbell chief welcomed 

dialogue with the Bosnian community. 

“We need to continue to open 

our doors and explain to them the 

best way we can what we’re doing,” 

he said. “Our job is difficult. 

Nobody wants to have contact with 

the police. The people we have contact 

with are either going to be victims, 

witnesses or suspects. People 

don’t necessarily want to know 

what the police do and usually they 

want to know after something bad 

has happened and that’s not the 

time to learn.” 

Kevin McLean, a well-known trial 

attorney from San Francisco hired 

by Bojcic’s family to represent 

them, doubted the grand jury system 

would deliver justice in the 

case. He said the family is ready to 

file a civil lawsuit seeking an 

unspecified amount in damages. He 


said he would file the suit after 

reviewing Bojcic’s autopsy report. 

McLean said he’s demanding the 

officer be arrested as is done in 

many counties in the state after an 

officer is involved in a deadly 

shooting. “I consider this a murder 

since my client was unarmed and 

his only infraction was smoking a 

cigarette outside a Starbucks.” 

He added: “Most cops are good 

and do their job properly, but there 

are some bad ones, and I think this 

guy acted badly.” 

Civil lawsuit against city may 

also include Starbucks 

About the pending lawsuit, 

McLean said, “It’s the only way that 

we can send a message to the police 

department that it can’t act this way. 

The family wants the truth to come 

out.” 

McLean contends the officer 

accosted Bojcic and escalated the 

situation by pushing and taunting 

him. He represents Bojcic’s mother, 

two sisters, brother-in-law, three 

nieces and two nephews. 

McLean said up until two months 

ago, tables outside Starbucks had 

ashtrays for smoking patrons. 

Others were also smoking the day of 

the shooting, he said. He alleges the 

new manager of the Starbucks didn’t 

like customers smoking outside 

the store. She had put signs up stating 

that Starbucks was a smoke free 

environment. Bojcic and other 

patrons continued to smoke outside. 

McLean is trying to determine if 

Bojcic had a run in with the officer 

a week before the shooting. “It’s a 

needless killing,” he said. “I’m going 

after Starbucks, too, because I 

believe the manager caused this to 

occur.” 

According to information 

released by the SJPD, Guess was 

asked by an employee of the 

Starbucks on Winchester Boulevard 

and Payne Avenue to move Bojcic, 

who was smoking outside of the 

West San Jose store. Police say 

Bojcic became confrontational. 

Guess fired his Taser at Bojcic as 

he hoisted a chair into the air as if to 

throw but apparently the Taser 

stunned the suspect momentarily 

and was not fully effective. 

Guess then shot a second round 

from his Taser after Bojcic charged 

at him, punching and kicking, 

authorities said. Again, the effect 

was “minimal.” Guess then fired his 

duty revolver. 

McLean said Guess was at the 

Starbucks on a break and that he 

approached Bojcic after the manager 

asked him to. He said Bojcic was 

somewhat removed from the store 

with four other Bosnian immigrants 

who were also smoking. Witnesses 

have told McLean that Bojcic put 

his cigarette out when he saw the 

officer approach. 

McLean said Guess demanded 

Bojcic stand up. When Bojcic 

declined because his legs were hurting—they 

had allegedly been 

injured during his internment at a 

concentration camp—Guess is said 

to have replied, “I can either be a 

nice guy or I can be an ass_ _ _ _.” 

“He was afraid of police because 

of his past experiences. He didn’t 

want the cop to talk to him or have 

anything to do with him,” McLean 

said, adding that’s when Guess 

reached for Bojcic’s left shoulder, 

Bojcic jumped up and stood behind 

the chair he was sitting on, which 

he kept between himself and the 

officer. 

Based on McLean’s interviews 

with witnesses, Guess took one of 

two Taser guns out and pointed it at 

Bojcic. He apparently refused to 

allow the four other Bosnian immigrants 

to help him calm down 

Bojcic. He shot Bojcic with the 

Taser and the victim reacted by 

throwing the chair at the cop and 

pulled the leads out because the 

Taser didn’t work. 

From that point, Bojcic 

approached Guess and punched 

him and they started wrestling in 

the parking lot area when Guess 

tased him again and continued 

wrestling. 

McLean said Guess then shot him 

in each leg and then fatally shot 

him in the chest. 

“Yes, Zaim hit him, but he was 

provoked to do it. The cop had no 


right to confront him because he 

wasn’t doing anything wrong.... He 

shouldn’t have approached Zaim 

without backup. The whole thing, 

from the beginning, was crummy 

and I blame the Starbucks manager 

for that because the people sitting 

next to him were smoking, and he 

wasn’t doing anything wrong.” 

Analysis of Taser guns 

Because the officer used his Taser 

gun twice without being able to 

subdue Bojcic, Guerrero-Daley said 

the IPA jointly with the SJPD is conducting 

an analysis of Taser gun use 

during their first six months of utility. 

The study ended in October and 

police authorities are reviewing the 

data to determine if they’re not 

working because of human or 

mechanical errors. 

Richard Konda, a member of the 

Coalition for Justice and 

Accountability, an activist group 

formed after police shot and killed 

Tran, said initial hopes were that 

officers would use the Tasers as the 

next to last option. “We’re concerned 

because they’re being used a 

lot more than anticipated,” he said. 

“They were asking the officer to 

let them calm the situation down, 

but the officer wouldn’t accept any 

assistance from them. We think this 

was very unfortunate,” Konda said. 

Konda said he was angered at the 

lack of cultural awareness exhibited 

by San Jose police officers that 

brought in Russian interpreters to 

the police station to help interview 

the Bosnian immigrants who witnessed 

the altercation. 

“There was a lot of miscommunication 

and a lack of understanding 

of the cultural issues the Bosnian 

community faces. They come from 

a war-torn country. In Zaim’s case, 

he was a victim of torture in a concentration 

camp before he came to 

this country,” Konda said. 

The coalition is working with the 

Santa Clara County Human 

Relations Commission to develop 

perspectives on the recent rise in 

officer-involved shootings. This 

year there have been six officerinvolved 

shootings, five were fatal.

laptop computers

Next to PDAs, laptop computers are 

probably the most commonly lost 

and stolen pieces of computer 

equipment. They are easy for thieves to 

snatch off of desks, abundant at airports, 

schools and coffee shops, 

and often left unattended 

during meetings, breaks or 

lunch hours. With auction 

services like eBay creating 

a global fencing market, it’s 

also easy for someone to 

dispose of them quickly for 

cash. I’ve seen many situations 

where employees 

have simply lost their company 

notebooks, and I’ve 

also been involved in a case 

or two where they were 

later recovered at the 

employee’s home. In larger 

companies with high 

turnover, it’s quite common 

for a disorganized or busy IT department 

to lose track of laptops as they shuffle 

among employees. 

For years, I’ve wondered if laptop manufacturers 

could install some sort of “beacon” 

in laptops so that they can be 

tracked down whenever they are missing 

or stolen. A company called Absolute 

Software is doing just that. Their product, 

Computrace, is designed to sit quietly 

in your laptop’s operating system, 

quickly checking in with Absolute’s 

servers once a day over the Internet just 

to make sure all is well. After you report 

your laptop missing, the servers will 

instruct Computrace to wake up and start 

sending data that can be used to trace the 

laptop as soon as it is plugged into a 

phone line or Internet connection. 

The beacon itself is actually a fairly 

simple technical problem to solve. There 

are some bigger considerations in laptop 

recovery that Absolute has also attacked, 

which is what makes their product 

appealing. The first is having the beacon 

survive a reformat or replacement of the 

notebook’s hard drive. Also, utilizing the 

information sent by the beacon in order 

to determine the exact location of the 

computer is probably the most challenging 

piece of all. 

Absolute has designed Computrace to 

be able to survive the total erasure of a 

hard disk drive erase, including a reformat 

and reload of the operating system. 

They are also working with laptop manufacturers 

to include Computrace components 

in the permanent memory (BIOS) 

of the laptop, so even if the hard drive is 

physically replaced, Computrace can still 

activate itself. While the standard software-based 

product is very resilient, it’s 

not completely foolproof. The BIOS sup-

port will make it extremely difficult for a 

thief to circumvent. When you are shopping 

for a new laptop, make sure and ask 

your vendor’s sales team about this 

important feature. Virtually all major 

laptop vendors have committed to supporting 

Computrace at the BIOS level 

early next year. 

Most of the value of a Computrace subscription 

is not in the technology, but in 

the laptop recovery process. After a 

missing laptop starts to phone home 

using an Internet connection or a 

modem, Absolute Software’s recovery 

team begins to collect data from the 

machine. Computrace can transmit basic 

information such as the internet connection 

(IP) address or the modem phone 

number by utilizing caller ID. It also 

sends more obscure information like keystrokes 

typed, data from newly created 

files on the hard drive, and any other 

information that might be 

useful in tracking the location 

of the computer. 

Recovery analysts at 

Absolute will piece together 

all the information they 

can collect in order to find 

out where the laptop is 

located. And here’s the 

best part: Absolute 

Software will work directly 

with law enforcement to 

obtain any necessary warrants 

to locate and recover 

the laptop. Both police and 

courts are starting to recognize 

that this technology 

works, and are taking it 

seriously. 

If a Computrace-protected laptop cannot 

be recovered after 30 days, Absolute 

Software will make a $1,000 payment to 

the laptop owner. This guarantee makes 

Computrace a very affordable insurance 

policy for laptops, even if a techno-savvy 

thief does manage to circumvent the 

technology. I believe that a very small 

percentage of laptops would fall into the 

hands of thieves that are both skilled and 

organized enough to disable the beacon 

functionality, so the likelihood of actual 

recovery is quite high. 

Computrace comes as a personal threeyear 

subscription for about $150. 

Companies can purchase a subscription 

to expanded versions of Computrace that 

provide protection for multiple laptops, 

as well as additional features like asset 

management of both hardware and software, 

data recovery services, and remote 

data wipe services for stolen laptops that 

might contain sensitive information. 

IBM and Toshiba are already listing 

Computrace as an optional line item for 

laptop orders, and Dell and HP are scheduled 

to begin offering it next month.

Historic Campbell 

offers a lively taste 

of German history

he city of Campbell, with a population of 

just under 39,000, gives off a small-town 

Tfeel 

rather than urban vibes, yet it once 

again managed to draw a large audience from all 

over the Bay Area to this year’s Oktoberfest. 

The city was transformed into a bustling 

Bavarian village the weekend of Oct. 16 and 17 

as the smell of bratwurst and the sound of 

German music filled the air. Numerous arts and 

crafts booths lined the middle of Campbell 

Avenue, offering handcrafted goods, paintings 

and jewelry. Children enjoyed Kinder Platz, 

while a diverse crowd listened to live entertainment 

at three different stages. 

The Alpiners, an authentic German band, 

entertained a large audience of all ages with 

their lively music and festive costumes. Other 

local artists included 14-year-old singer Nicole 

Cheri’, Augie Baldanzi, an 80-something 

strolling accordion player, and the San Jose 

Metro Band. 

While there are a few out there who are not 

into the music and arts and crafts scene, everyone 

can appreciate good food. Food vendors 

offered delectables that included a variety of 

sausages and other grilled meats, potato salad, 

red cabbage and sauerkraut. 

All had something a little different to offer, 

which was a really good excuse for people to 

“sample” as many of the items as possible, and 

there are some items that can only be found at 

Oktoberfest. For example, Little Hofbrau makes 

specialty sausage specifically for Oktoberfest 

and Wurst Sausage’s famous German hot potato 

salad can only be purchased at this festival. 

Yet when people think of Oktoberfest, perhaps 

good German beer is the first thing that 

comes to mind. The Bier Garten offered a wide 

selection to wash down the savory food and 

keep the body warm, including Spatan Beer. 

The official beer of Oktoberfest, this beer dates 

back to 1810, when Oktoberfest started in 

Germany to celebrate the marriage of King 

Ludwig I to the Princess Therese von Sachesen- 

Hildenburghausen. What better place to drink 

historic beer than historic Campbell? 

Campbell’s Oktoberfest is “One of the most 

outstanding German festivals in the Bay Area,” 

said Betty Deal, executive director of the 

Campbell Chamber of Commerce. It draws people 

from all over the area and “puts Campbell on 

the map.” 

And putting Campbell on the map is exactly 

why the Chamber sponsors Oktoberfest each 

year. In its 10th year, the city of Campbell started 

Oktoberfest along with the Downtown 

Business Association and the Chamber to bring 

more business to downtown. It is Deal’s hope 

that when people come to Oktoberfest and see 

all that the city has to offer, they might be tempted 

to come back to Campbell on a regular basis.

Campbell Avenue became “Commercial Row” for 

Oktoberfest, featuring more than 100 vendors of various 

arts and crafts. 

In spite of its success, the festival does not 

necessarily offer a large profit to Chamber coffers. 

Oktoberfest costs about $60-$80K to put on 

and nothing is donated. The Chamber still has 

to pay the bills, whether they earn a profit or 

not. 

“By the time you pay all of the fees and permits, 

that adds up,” explained Deal. They get 

lots of volunteers for the festivals, which really 

helps in terms of the cost, but the success of the 

festival largely depends on the weather. 

While Saturday was pleasant and sunny, 

Sunday brought rain and an overcast sky. 

Surprisingly, there was still a large turnout on 

both days and the downtown merchants were 

pleased with the business it brought to them. 

“Overall, it was a good festival, even with the 

weather,” said Deal.

Most of us remember our college 

days with fondness. I guess it was 

said to all of us that these were 

the best days of our lives. They were days 

and nights to be savored forever. 

Or were they? New studies, 

including one recently 

reported in the New York 

Times, indicates that college 

days can be unusually 

stressful, that depression 

and even suicide lurk under 

the ivy. A book by Dr. 

Richard Kadison, a mental 

health professional at 

Harvard University, is titled 

“College of the 

Overwhelmed: The Campus 

Mental Health Crisis and 

What to Do About It.” 

Right now our high 

school seniors are anxiously 

awaiting word about their college applications. 

They have sought out schools that 

match their career interests or other goals. 

But Dr. Kadison advises that applicants 

also look for schools with mental health 

facilities for their students. In other 

words, in addition to examining the college’s 

faculty for academic credentials, the 

savvy student might also inquire about the 

staff of mental health professionals and 

what services are provided. 

Thinking back at my own college days, I 

remember moments of depression and 

alienation. And with that came the assurance 

in my mind that I was unique in that 

moodiness. The other kids all seemed to 

be having a ball. 

But we are discovering that lots of kids 

are not having a ball. They are stressed out 

most of the time. According to a recent 

study by the American College Health 

Association, about half of all college students 

are so depressed at times that they 

have trouble functioning. More than 10 

percent are clinically depressed. 

Is this the way it always was, or is there 

something new out there that is deflating 

these supposedly charmed days of youth? 

A little of both, I’d say. Youth has never 

been an easy time. It’s an age when selfconsciousness 

suddenly overcomes a less 

introspective childhood. It’s worse now. 

Each succeeding generation is having to 

face up to greater and greater competitiveness 

as job opportunities begin to wane, 

and our confidence in future opportunities 

grows less certain. A young 20-year-old, 

perhaps a star of her high school years, 

enters a world where classmates are striving 

in ever-more frantic ways. And yes, 

there remains yesterday’s old uncertainties 

about social acceptance, attractiveness, 

and competence. When you think 

about it, the college years are fraught with 

fear. 

Fear, of course, can lead to depression 

and even worse. The Columbine High 

School tragedy is but one example of

youngsters alienated from the group, going 

to extremes. A Brooklyn College professor, 

Corey Robin, has written a new book 

about “Fear” that explores all sorts of 

facets of the subject. It seems part of our 

society from early ages to Iraq. A highly 

competitive society adds to the normal 

human stresses as it presents a landscape 

of alienation and enmity. “Success and 

Failure” becomes the standard by which 

everything gets defined, but those are 

terms of judgment less obvious that they 

seem. Money? Fame? Prizes? What are 

the achievements worth a lifetime of struggle? 

You ponder that in college. And you 

ponder just how you fit in? It is an age of 

great fragility. And that word 

again: fear. 

Well, I am not a psychologist 

or a therapist. On individual 

levels, young people 

who feel they need help 

should seek it. Young people 

are often too embarrassed 

to do so, or see therapy 

as yet another indication 

of their inadequacy. And 

this is where parents, sensitive 

to the needs of their 

kids, should be stepping in 

with encouragement. 

I am aware that none of 

this is easy. And one solution 

does not fit all. 

But, since we are becoming 

increasingly aware of the needs of 

young people, especially during the college 

years, it is unfortunate when those 

needs are hidden and allowed to deplete 

the pleasure of what should be, indeed, a 

time of excitement and challenge. 

I guess, for me, a long way from college, 

there is the realization that people are not 

necessarily at fault for their problems. It is 

a community concern, or a societal concern. 

When the world becomes a fearful, 

difficult place, it affects the innocent the 

most. There is no even playing field. 

Some have it much harder than others. 

The young should be increasingly open 

about what troubles them. And others, 

including other young people, should be 

there to share concerns with understanding 

and friendship. 

Ah, yes, I sound like Dr. Phil. Well, I 

could use Dr. Phil at times, and we certainly 

all can use understanding parents, 

good friends and anyone else in a position 

to help. 

Needing help is in no way demeaning. 

It is where we all stand most of our lives.

opens at Vasona on 

Thanksgiving

Bright lights will soon be attracting more than just 

wild life to Vasona Lake County Park. For the sixth 

consecutive year, the Santa Clara County Parks and 

Recreation Department will illuminate Vasona Lake 

County Park with their Fantasy of Lights spectacular. 

Fantasy of Lights is a wondrous display of thousands of 

lights and animated scenes that will be erected minutes 

away from Campbell residents. 

“We’re thrilled to be presenting Fantasy of Lights again. 


A park ranger welcomes a family to the 6th Annual Fantasy of 

Lights, an evening drive-through tour of over 30 light displays at 

Vasona Lake County Park in Los Gatos. 

It’s a perfect way to entertain park visitors during the holidays 

in the wonderful outdoor setting of Vasona Lake,” 

said Tamara Shear, public information officer of the 

Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Department. 

Opening at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Festival of 

Lights will burn brightly until 10 p.m. nightly. 

The lights and exhibits are more than just your average 

string of holiday lights and cardboard cutouts. A 20-foot 

poinsettia drive-through arch is an exhibit that is like no 

other. Yes, drive-through. Unlike similar events of it’s 

kind, Fantasy of Lights allows families to stay in their 

own cars to view all of the magnificent displays that the 

exhibition has to offer. However, the never-ending parade 

of cars visiting Fantasy of Lights prohibits pedestrians 

and bicyclists from viewing this event. 

While driving through this brilliant light array you will 

experience over 30 scenes ranging in height and magnitude, 

some towering as high as 60 feet in the air. Other 

spectacles include displays such as “Santa shooting 

hoops,” “The Nutcracker” and “Frolicking Penguins” 

which are animated displays that will have your eyes 

dancing through each attraction. 

Silence is golden, but holiday music comes but once a 

year. While venturing through Fantasy of Lights, Vasona 

Lake County Park will have a radio simulcast of holiday 

music, which can be found easily with a quick touch of 

the seek button. 

The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad comes into station at 

Oak Meadows Park and its tracks are laid through a vast 

amount of Vasona Lake. This train becomes an adventurous 

alternative to piling into the family car and driving 

through the Fantasy of Lights. 

Admission to this wondrous event is by the carload. 

Prices vary by day of the week. A mere $9 will get the 

entire family into the Fantasy of Lights weeknights before 

Dec. 16, with the prices making a small increase to $12 

until Dec. 31. Weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) prices 

have been set for $12 and will not vary. 

“With dazzling light displays and holiday music playing, 

park visitors will be awe of the fun,” added Shear. 

Don’t let Fantasy of Lights melt away and become the 

“snow” of yesteryear. Come before the plug is pulled on 

Dec.31 and experience the excitement.

Blossom Hill Road, west of Los Gatos Boulevard, in Los

Following Oct. 29 homecoming 

festivities by an evening, 

Westmont High School footballers 

forged ahead with focus, 

pounding an overmatched group 

from Mount Pleasant High School 

20-8. The victory shortens a gap 

between the Warriors, first place 

Lincoln High School and second 

place Santa Teresa High School. 

Coupled with a resounding 47- 

22 win, Saturday, Nov. 6—which 

incidentally spoiled homecoming 

for Gunderson High School— 

Warrior homecoming heroics have 

pit Westmont against the other two 

contenders in a three way sprint 

toward the Blossom Valley Athletic 

League Championship—the winner 

awarded an automatic bid to 

the CCS playoffs. 

“It’s taken awhile to get in 

synch,” said Westmont coach, 

Tony Santos, following the game. 

“But we’re a good football team. 

We’re big and mean up front, all of 

the kids get along well and the 

coaching staff is full of great guys.”

asked by his roommates to leave their apartment. 

The suspect returned and took property (laptop

the other roommates and fled. He is still outstanding.

Cherry Lane 

A 14-year-old male stole a bicycle the week before 

and on this day he rode the bike to school and was 

caught. He was cited. 

10/21: Vandalism 

Sobrato Drive 

An unknown suspect punctured all four tires on the 

victim’s Buick LeSabre. A report was taken. 

10/22: Theft 

S. Bascom Avenue (Rasputin Music) 

A 44-year-old male suspect from San Jose did a price 

switch on a record album. He had a prior experience 

of this kind in the 1970s. A report was sent to the district 

attorney for review. 

10/23: Under the Influence of a Controlled

for homecoming with rallies, 

the big dance and a good dose of 

excitement. “The theme of the 

week was focus,” continued 

Santos, noting that the return for 

his players was well worth the 

investment of relative solitude. 

“We had bed checks and curfews 

every night,” he continued. “And 

now we’re playing for the league 

championship.” 

An estimated crowd of 2,000 

filled the Westmont stadium to 

support the rising Warriors, a vote 

of confidence to Santos and his 

staffers. Since the former 

Sacramento State University stars’ 

hire seven years back—and inheritance 

of a formerly flailing Warrior 

program—the football team has 

undergone a makeover. Santos and 

his bounty of progressive thinking 

and ‘great guy’ assistant coaches 

have instilled a winning philosophy 

into a group of talented athletes. 

“You have to be a teacher first,” 

explains Santos, of the thought 

behind a 6-3 Westmont squad. 

“Obviously we want to win, but 

what’s more important is the experience 

kids take home with them at 

night.” 

Junior Chantz Staden, in particular, 

appears to be taking something 

valuable away from football 

practice. Staden—the STAL 

Sophomore of the Year in basketball 

last season—has provided 

highlight after highlight on both 

sides of the football this season. 

Currently, the 5-foot 8 inch, 175 

speed-burner leads the Warriors in 

rushing with 544 yards, and 

receiving with 381. “He’s amazing,” 

commented Santos of his star 

running back. 

Clearing the way for Staden and 

fellow runner Daniel Weller is a 

line averaging approximately 260 

pounds across the board. “If you’re 

going to be successful, you have to 

have good lineman,” added Santos. 

The rule holds toweringly true for 

Westmont, whose college-style, 

single back, spread formations 

demand athleticism of blockers, in 

addition to size. Starters Kyle 

Portis, Will Evans, Ramsey Habib, 

Tyler Porras and Jeff Andrews have 

accomplished all asked of them so 

far in 2004. 

Quarterback Kevin Pham has 

never failed to impress, doubling 

as a coach on the field. Santos has 

relinquished the majority of game 

time play calling to Pham who has 

accounted for nearly 1000 yards 

passing through nine games. “He 

has 100 percent audible control,” 

explained Santos. “That’s how 

much confidence I have in Kevin.” 

However, also according to 

Santos, Mt. Pleasant churned up a 

greater challenge than Westmont 

alums may have hoped. The 

Cardinals hung around both on the 

scoreboard and after tackles. “It 

was a good, clean game,” continued 

Santos, noting the hard-hitting 

atmosphere. Westmont linebackers 

D.J. Jackman and Justin O’Conor 

rose to the occasion, repeatedly 

whacking Mt. Pleasant runners 

into submission. 

Holding their end of the bargain, 

the Warriors impressed returning 

alumni, as well as a burgeoning 

group of seniors and STAL followers. 

Next up are the Lincoln Lions, 

in what amounts to the STAL 

Championship held Friday, Nov. 12 

at Westmont. Kick-off is slated for 

7:30 p.m. Expect a focused 

Westmont team to challenge the 

undefeated Lions with a playoff 

appearance on the line. 

Substance, No Lights on Bike 

Civic Center at First Street 

A 34-year-old male was stopped for riding a bicycle 

with no lights after dark. He was found to be under 

the influence of a controlled substance and was 

arrested. 

10/25: Burglary 

Almarida Avenue 

A neighbor observed a male suspect entering a house 

through a window. He was arrested as he walked 

from the house with stolen property in his hands. 

10/31: Domestic Violence 

Ensenada Drive 

A 40-year-old male was in a fight with his wife, 

which included hitting, pushing and throwing 

resulting in minor injuries. An emergency protective 

order was declined. The suspect was arrested. 

10/31: Domestic Violence 

McGlincey Avenue 

A 43-year-old female suspect went to her husband’s 

work and began attacking him because he refused to 

give her money. The husband sustained numerous 

scratches on his neck. An emergency protective 

order was declined. The suspect was arrested. 

10/29: Shoplifting 

W. Hamilton Avenue (Mervyns) 

A 29-year-old female and a 49-year-old female relative 

took property from Mervyns without paying for 

it. They were both cited and released.

Owners of Restaurant O, an 

upscale restaurant located at 2081 S. 

Winchester Blvd. closed their restaurant 

to make way for an expansion of their 

catering business offices. They plan to 

reopen at a larger location sometime 

next year. It is unclear if that location 

will be in Campbell. 

Campbell Brewing Company has 

closed its doors in downtown Campbell 

after only three months in business. It 

replaced Stoddards and was co-owned 

by Bob Stoddard. Stoddard will stay on
