“Astronaut Lands At Jerry Ross” by
Ashley Henry
Guess who came to
our school? JERRY ROSS!!!!
We were all so surprised
when Mrs. Stolarz announced
to us, during the
morning announcements
that Jerry Ross was in our
gym! Many of the students
wore Jerry Ross shirts in
anticipation of his visit and
to welcome him. This was
the first time any of our
students have ever met or
seen Jerry Ross in person.
Mariah Alvarez said, “It
was so cool that Jerry Ross
came here during my last
year here!”
He spoke to everyone
about what it was like
to be in space and all the
cool things you can do in
space. Can you just imagine
what it would be like to
float around in the air and
NOT fall down?!!!
Brooke Perez said,
“I think Jerry Ross’ advice,
‘Once you put your mind to
something, you can succeed!’
was awesome.”
Gabby Zirkle said,
“The video was very inspiring.
I loved it!” The video
showed that when in space,
if you throw an M&M into a
bubble of water the bubble
will not burst. Pretty cool!
Jerry Ross brought
a real video camera up into
space to record all the
events that happened while
he was up there.
Logo designed by Aaliyah White
Did you
know that his wife
made space food?
One of the hardest
things to eat in
space was scrambled
eggs because
they go all over the
place. They have to
float around chasing
after them.
I don’t
think anyone will
ever forget our day
with Jerry Ross.
What an awesome
day and what an
awesome man!
pervised adult. Homemade caramel apples are popular this
time of year. They can be coated with sprinkles, nuts,
pretzels, and different kinds of candies.
If you are having a fall party, a scavenger hunt or
scary stories by a campfire while making s’mores is always
fun with family and friends.
Eric Diaz said, “I think fall activities are great
and my favorite is jumping in leaves.” Liz Sever said, “I
think fall activities are fun and my favorite thing to do in
the fall is go on haunted hayrides and go to haunted
houses. There are so many fun and exciting things to do
in the fall. HAPPY FALL Y”ALL!

“An Amazing Pet” by Scott Daley
Hey, are you looking for an
amazing pet? If you are then I have a
pet for you. It’ s called a Bearded
Dragon. They come from Australia. I
know its name sounds scary, but they
are the coolest things you would ever
see.
Bearded Dragons are brown
and have an auburn color when their
bodies are at their preferred warm
temperature. If they are cooler than
normal then they usually are a dull
brown, so crank up the temperature!
When they grow up to their full size
they can be up to two feet long. Jake
Borders says, “They are playful and fun.
The cool part is when they get scared
“Origami” by Mia Bruskowski
Origami is the art or process,
originating in Japan, of folding
paper into shapes. Paper may be made
into many different objects. Origami
comes in many shapes and sizes. I as a
writer have experience with origami.
Someti mes I even create things that
no one has named or invented it. Many
people tend to think that origami is
hard, but fascinating. I think that
origami is a relaxing thing I do as a
hobby not as competition. Origami is a
creative thing to do.
“Take 5” by Jenny Quinn
What do you do on your weekends?
Gracie Lynch-Soccer games.
Good luck!!
Patrick Falaney– Goes to his
cousins and also plays videogames on
Sunday. What game? HaloReach
Carrington Headdy– Goes to
Chicago, or to a friend’s house, or has
cheer practice.
they puff out their beard.”
It’ s not that difficult to own a
Bearded Dragon. They need at least a
30-gallon tank to live in. The bottom
should be filled with sand or ground
English walnut shells. They need a heat
lamp and a UV light. You could put accessories
in such as flat rocks, logs and
fake plants to make them feel at home.
All of this can be found at pet shops.
Bearded Dragons’ diet consists
of vegetables and fruit such as carrots,
green beans, snow peas, sugar snaps,
collard greens and mustard greens. The
fun part about feeding them is when
they eat crickets. They LOVE crickets!
Especially when you sprinkle repti-
“Origami is a fun thing to do
and looks cool when finished!” says Sienna
Gentry.
“Origami is cool!” replied Alexandra
Suleski
I also think origami is cool and
fun and you should try it sometime!
Dimi Miller– goes to her Dad’s
house and is going to see her dogs:
Kiki, Hallak, and Pebbles. Have fun!!
Sebastian Freeman-Likes to
play videogames, read, eat, watch tv,
and play in his basement. What kinds
of videogames? Modern Warfare.
Jade Hensley-goes to the
gym, goes for a run, and hangs out
with cousins and friends.
calcium on which gives them extra vitamins.
They also need a dish filled with
fresh water each day.
It is a good idea to give them
exercise each day out of their tank.
They can roam around your room, and
they are good climbers. “They’ re cool
and make good pets,” Max Smith says.
These are excellent reasons
why Bearded Dragons make phenomenal
pets. I hope you consider getting a
Bearded Dragon.
Miss Flaherty– She likes to
hang out with friends and family.
I like to go on a horseback
ride through the woods. I hope you
liked reading what my teacher and
classmates like to do.
“Kid’s Sport’s Stars” by Andrew Mild
Andrew: How did you get into sports?
Noah Rangel: It was probably football
when I was 5; I just tried out and
was really good.
Andrew: Do you play other sports?
Noah: I also play baseball and basketball.
Andrew: What are your favorite
sport’s teams?
Noah: I like the Colts, Cubs, Yankees,
and Miami Heat.
Andrew: What leagues do you play
for?
Noah: I play baseball, basketball and
football, all in Crown Point.
Andrew: Have you won a league title?
Noah: I was so close this year in CP Jr.
Bulldog football. I play for the Black
Knights.
Noah wanted to play football
when he was five, but when he tried out
the coaches said he didn’t weigh enough.
Noah’s position in football is Blitzer.
Noah had several great tackles this
year. Noah also played tight end and
had some good runs. In 2009, his
team’s record was 1-6. This year the
team went 5-4 and played in the CP Jr.
Bulldog Super Bowl.
In baseball, Noah plays shortstop
and pitcher.
This is Noah’s first year participating
in basketball.
“The Cardinal” by Jake Borders
The cardinal is the official bird
for about 7 states. These birds don’ t
migrate and are usually found in warmer
climates in the southeast, but in recent
decades they have been found more
north and even in Canada. The Cardinal
weighs about 1.5 to 1.8 oz, and is 8 to 9
inches long. They usually live about 15
years.
Cardinals will eat seeds fro m
feeders if available, but they also eat
insects, sap and fruit. Male cardinals
are more colorful than the females.
“Midnight for Charlie Bone” by Blake King
If you like action every time you
flip the page then the book, Midnight
Charlie Bone is for you.
In the book, Charlie is getting
himself in a bad position. When Charlie
gets a misplaced picture of a family
that’ s when everything changes. He realizes
that he is endowed which means he
has special ability. Charlie can hear what
people in a picture are saying. That is
when the aunts arrive.
Page 4
They are brilliant red with a reddish bill
and a black face. The females are pale
brown or grey with a black face and orange
bill. Both the male and female sing,
but the female sings longer.
Cardinals are social birds and will gather
in flocks of 70 during the winter months.
In the spring they will pair up for nesting.
The male cardinal is the defender of their
breeding territory. They will charge at an
intruding bird. They have also flown into
windows because they think their reflection
is another bird!
The aunts are treacherous people
that put Charlie to the test when he
is endowed. Once he is finished talking
with them he goes to his best friend
Ben. Together they go to Miss Engledew’
s book shop where Charlie finds
himself telling her about the picture.
She said the man in the pictures was
Mr. Tolly. So then she gives them so me
of Mr. Tolly’ s inventions, a robotic dog
and a case.
Noah may be small, but he
has the biggest heart(Mrs. Yurko
agrees!)
A quote from friend, Grant
Harris, “He is a good friend that is
nice to me.”
Not only does he find out the baby
in the mysterious picture was missing, but
he has to go to Bloor’ s Academy. When
Charlie meets new friends and foes and gets
detention on the first day he is astonished
with the Academy. Find out what other
situations will happen to Charlie at Bloor’ s
Academy.
“Reading Corner” by Mike Blachut
What is a reading corner? Is
it a place in the library? Perhaps, it
is just a place for you to relax and
read a great book.
Books are very important to
our history and culture. They are
written to keep records of events
currently happening or happened in
this world of ours. This data is significant
to the human race. Without
books, history would be forgotten. In
fact, there might not be any history.
They are essential for your education!
They help you think of many possibilities
and GOLDEN opportunities.
Books even preserve yourself
inside them. A young self, but nonetheless
is you. Many authors encourage
children to read. Some of these
authors as you may know are: Rick
Riordan, Erin Hunter, C.S. Lewis and
for more frequent readers: J.K. Rowling
and Christopher Paolini.
I asked five random people,
including my teacher, “What is your
favorite book?” Three of the five said
it was hard to choose. They had quite a
few favorites. Mrs. Aiello said, “I have
lots of favorites, but my absolute favorite
is “The Giver.” Jacob Keaveney
does not like one of the books in a series,
and his favorite books are the
Pendragons. Patrick Mimnaugh, the
A.R. Star, can not choose either. He
likes the “Rangers Apprentice” books
along with the “Vampire” series. If he
had to choose one he told me it would
be “Vampires 3:Blood Curtain.” I even
asked our Principal, Mrs. Stolarz. Her
favorite is “Colony.”
“Do You Like Glasses or Not? By Michela Bonaventura
I am going around the school asking
people if they like glasses, don’ t like
glasses, or want contacts.
First, I asked Revon Wilson if
she wants glasses and she said yes because
she might look cute in them.
In my opinion, I have glasses and sometimes
I like them, but sometimes they
are a pain. Alyssa Gomez feels the
same way. She hates her glasses and
would rather have contacts.
Finally I asked Dimi Miller
and she said, “They might be hard to
take care of and she would not want
contacts because they could get stuck
in your eyes!” So if she had to pick
one it would be glasses!
“Winfield/Jerry Ross Fall Fundraiser” by Colleen Regovic
This year for the School
Fundraiser students are selling
cookie dough, cheesecakes, and
pizza. Both Winfield and Jerry
Ross Elementary will benefit from
this fundraiser. A percentage of
the sells go towards both schools.
This year it is even more exciting...not
only are there prizes to
choose from but they added the
“Lucky Duck” with Lanyard promotion.
For every 5 items that a student
sells they receive a Lucky
Duck. They will continue getting
Lucky Ducks for each 5 additional
items sold. On Thursday, October
7 th , and Thursday, October 14 th
both schools will have “Feed the
Duck Day”. On these days students
who are wearing their Lanyard/Duck
will get to choose candy prizes:
Skittles, Warheads, Gourmet Suckers,
and Jumbo pens. We must all
get out and SELL, SELL, SELL. Even
if you sell one item you will help
your school. I spoke to a couple of
students to get their thoughts on
this fundraiser and here are some
things that were said.
Kelly Regovic (my sister), 2 nd grade
from Winfield Elementary said, “I
think the ducks are totally cool and
“Our Outdoor Lab” by Kayla Thompson
I like wearing it around school.”
Danny Sopczak, 3 rd grader from
Jerry Ross Elementary said, “I like
the ducks a lot and I hope we raise
a lot of money for the school.”
I hope we can all do our part and
help our school with this year’s Fall
fundraiser.
Our outdoor lab is a fun place to be in. Even though it is hard to take care of, it all pays off. In the lab there are gardens,
animals, and bugs.
“It is a hard working job for students who love animals and nature.” explained Tyler Jones.
The Outdoor Learning Lab Club had their second meeting on October 6th after school till 4:30. My teacher,
Mrs. Aiello teaches it and as you can see she does an awesome job.
At our club we learn about animals, nature, and of course we help improve the lab. “It is a good way to get interested
in nature, “ Chris Paris exclaimed.
This year there are a lot of kids, but last year there wasn’t many.
In closing, Mrs. Stolarz said, “I hope that all of our students enjoy learning about environment and nature in the
lab because it is a beautiful space of land.”
“Spell Bowl 2010” by Nicole Libiran
Have you ever wondered what it's like
to be in spell bowl? Spell Bowl has
exciting games, cliffhanging competitions,
and creative posters we make
around the school.
Our spell bowl members have been
doing challenging tests each week,
consisting of 100 words per test. In
total, there's 750 superb words.
HOMEWORK, the homework at
spell bowl is not that hard. Have you
ever had a spelling choice board? A
spelling choice board is a paper that
allows you to pick from 9 choices. On
the spelling choice board
you can write 100 words using blue
for consonants and red for vowels.
The other choices are, making a word
search, writing words in chalk, write
the words in alphabetical order,
practice words on caltutor(website
“SOM” by Sydney Rippe-Ellman
where you can study the words, learn
the definition, and say the words correctly
, you can also write words in
shaving cream, practice words on
spelling city, another website, write
your words in an unique way, or divide
your words into syllables. What
IS it like to be in spell bowl? Lets hear
it from Kayla Guerrero and confident
Miss Flaherty. Kayla says," Spell Bowl
is very creative and a unique way to
learn how to spell words." Miss
Flaherty said," I'm really excited about
Spell Bowl this year and I think we will
do a fantastic job." If you’re in the fifth
grade and fourth grade pod, you
probably have seen multiple posters
of words written on paper. Miss
Flaherty asks u s after every test to
write the word in silly handwriting and
hang them up. Lots of people ask
me," Do you stand up and say the
words out loud?" The answer to that
question is a straight NO. Each of the
spell bowl members go to a table with
this one teacher who checks the
work. The announcer would tell us a
word and we would write it down on a
piece of paper. Your chair is faced
back from the audience so you won't
be terrified with all those eyes staring
at you. I have said a lot about spell
bowl, so if your interested, fourth
graders and third graders, you can
join spell bowl next year and have the
time of your life. Who knows, one day
we might win 1st in the state! It's a
great club once you get to know it
better. I hope I gave you a glimpse of
this fantastic club. Everything in spell
bowl is about HAVING FUN ! ;D
Student of the month is one of the many things Jerry Ross has to offer. Each month a student
from each class is elected to be student of the month. This student has the best qualities
in perseverance and many other wonderful characteristics. Mazzy Ensweiler, was one of many
students who had the honor of being named student of the month for September.
I interviewed Mazzy Ensweiler and asked her how it felt to be student of the month.
She said, “It felt wonderful being student of the month.” We also discussed how it felt being
elected. She said, “I felt shocked I got picked.” This just goes to show with a lot of
hard work and kindness, you too can become student of the month.
“Mrs. Bourrell” by Kady Chael
Do you know who the best
Jerry Ross third grade teacher is?
Well she is 5foot 7inches, huge Colts
fan, born in September, and also has
two children named Kali and Ryan. She
has two dogs named Kloe (a Chocolate
Lab) and Hershey (a Chocolate Cocker
Spaniel). Can you guess whom this
amazing and incredibly awesome
Jerry Ross third grade teacher is?
This incredibly awesome
teacher is Mrs. Michelle Bourrell. One
reason I chose Mrs. Bourrell is because
she is my own brother’s
teacher, so I figured that I could get
more information about her from him.
And another reason is she is very nice
and intelligent.
Mrs. Bourrell loves to sleep but
is afraid of the dark. She also knows
all her math facts (now wouldn’t you
say that is pretty cool to know all
your math facts). My teacher, Mrs.
Thomas, introduced Mrs. Bourell to
Twilight, now Mrs. Bourrell wants to
marry Edward from Twilight. And I
am sure Mrs. Bourrell is longing to see
all four movies of the Twilight Saga.
Mrs. Bourrell is a busy teacher;
she has to try to keep up with her
students, her loving family, and the
rest of the school. When Mrs. Bourrell
is not busy she is enjoying her
“Square 1 Art Project” by Aaliyah White
The square 1 art project is so
exciting! I asked a couple of stu-
dents around Jerry Ross about
the project. “I think square 1
art is enjoyable and colorful,”
said Vanessa White. Square 1
Page 8
art can also be fashionable.
“Square 1 art is fun, awesome,
and spectacular!” Sydney Young
said. Square 1 art has a lot of
experience in art. Plus, getting
your art on a T-Shirt or other!
WOW! It is a fun activity! I
think Mrs.Vassil enjoys this very
delicious Mexican food. Mrs. Bourrell
said that she is a horrible cook, but if
she tried harder to be a better cook,
she could make a delicious dinner.
Mrs. Bourrell’s favorite holiday
is Halloween and Halloween means
candy (boy, does she love her candy).
Mrs. Bourrell hopes to own Albanese
candy factor later on in her lifetime.
But for loving candy she wishes she
could fly. Now you know all I know
about Mrs. Bourrell. And we should all
hope she would own Albanese the
candy factory. We should also thank
Mrs. Bourrell for being a Jerry Ross
third grade teacher.
Mrs. Bourrell’s Class
much. And you can also get your
picture on stickers! Square 1 art
is a lot of fun. And I also think
Mrs. Stolarz will like our creative
minds and our art project!
The White Sox this year did
half of the season, but still came back
and got first place. It was crazy!
People thought the White Sox would
go to the playoff, but they did not.
It all ends here in the last
Harry Potter movie, “The Deathly
Hallows.” This phenomenon will be
coming out on November 19th, 2010,
but it isn't over yet! The second film
will be coming out on July 15th, 2011.
You must see it to believe it.
This exciting adventure will
take you through immortal dangers
and troubles. Harry Potter must face
Volume 1, Issue 1
However, before the season ended
they got Manny Ramirez. It was cool!
He did well; he hit three homeruns
and many base hits.
At the beginning of the season
they lost Jake Peavy, the starting
pitcher. It was horrible! Neverthe-
fear and defeat Lord Voldermot.
Now that Dumbledore is dead, no one
can stop he who must not be named.
A war is coming upon Hogwarts and it
is up to Harry to stop it.
Millions of fans will be there
to see it come out and so are some of
our students and teachers. “I’m going
to be the first to see the movie when
it comes out,” Jenny Quinn told me.
“I also want to be the first one to see
less, they made it and it was a good
season for them. If they would have
made it to the playoffs it would have
been awesome. Maybe next year. I
hope they can make it to the World
Series and win so they can be the
2011 champions.
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” by Kayla Guerrero
the movie, so that I can ask my
friends if they saw it yet,” Ante Tanjic
said.
You should be there to see
the finale. It will be the biggest ending
of the Harry Potter series and
you don't want to miss it.
“Gamer Needs” by Ramone Serros
Hey guys are you looking to play a game
with non-stop action? Well if so, Halo
Reach is definitely a game you must buy!
It’ s a first person-shooter game with all
sorts of cool graphics and game-types,
some of my favorites include Capture
the Flag, Team Slayer, Free-For- All,
but there are many more!
Halo Reach takes place in the
year 2550, on a planet called Reach.
The goal is to try to defend Reach from
the Covenants. The Covenants are aliens
trying to destroy the universe and annilhate
the human race.
Graphics in all the Halo games
are always awesome and if you have
played any of the other Halo games you
would know how the armor looks and in
Halo Reach they step it up, making the
armor look life-like! Actually graphics
for everything like the guns, vehicles,
and surroundings have been amped up to
perfection. It makes you feel as if you
were really there helping defend Reach
yourself, gunning down Covenant after
Covenant, but sadly it’ s all in your head
and you’ re really just in your room playing
online with your friends.
Now to an area that my friends
and I are talking about, Forge World!
Forge World is an area that is setup to
allow you to build and customize your
gaming experience to whichever preference
you decide. Meaning you can build a
“Candy & Treasures” by Hailey Surd
Third graders had a blast at Albanese
Candy Factory and Deep River
Historic Grist Mill. I caught up with
the kids and took a survey on their trip.
I asked the class, “What is your favorite
kind of candy from Albanese?” Two
people liked the sugar tubes, thirteen
people liked the chocolate, and six students
liked gummy bears. Mrs. Thompson
said, “I’ ve always liked gummy
bears; my favorites are the red ones.”
At Al-
XC
Page 10
banese the kids bought candy, they
learned how gummy bears are made and
they took a tour of the factory. At
Deep River, the kids dug for things in a
huge heap of dirt and found things like
pots, pans, plates, glass, bones, bells,
and shells. I asked Nicole Surd if she
found any artifacts in the dirt pile. She
responded “Yes, my friend and I found a
little bead, a bell, and a piece of a broken
plate”. The third graders also saw a
house in the middle of a warzone if you
wanted to, allowing you to make it your
own.
Halo Reach is the best Halo
game every made it is totally worth the
$60 bucks! Words can’ t describe how
good it is, Microsoft gave it 5 stars!
Get this game while you can because
unfortunately this is the last Halo game
being made. So don’ t just take my word
for it, try it yourself and come on down,
we need you Spartan!
giant grain grinder in a 1904 church
building. The grinder was powered by an
enormous water wheel. All the third
graders enjoyed their trip. I hope
you’ ll visit Albanese Candy Factory and
Deep River because you are guaranteed
to have fun! Thank you for reading the
“Mrs. Bane” by Noor Malik
One glorious morning as I was
walking down the hallway, I came up
to Mrs. Bane’s room and knocked on
the door. I heard from the other
side Mrs. Bane saying, “Come in!” I
opened the door slowly and stepped
into her classroom. Mrs. Bane was
sitting behind her desk grading papers.
When she saw me she said, “Oh,
hello Noor. What is it you want.” I
aksed if she didn’t mind answering a
few questions for my interview. She
said, “I would be delighted to.” My
first question was, “What would you
like to see on the playground? She
responded with, “I would like to see
people being included in everything,
people using their life skills and students
taking care of the playground
equipment.” I nodded my head and
asked her, “What do you think about
bullying? She said it is completely
“Happy Halloween!” by Parris Ferree
Do you know that Halloween is also
called All Hallows Eve and All Saints Eve? It
is a wonderful holiday to trick and to treat.
Crown Point’s trick or treat times are fro m
5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This is a time for you to
spend time with your friends and even get
some candy too.
The date of Halloween is Sunday,
October 31 ST . Halloween is a time for fun but
also remember to be safe. Some safety tips
Volume 1, Issue 1
are: Watch for cars, make sure that you can
see out of your mask, carry a flashlight or
something glow in the dark, wear shoes that
are comfortable, and make sure your costume
is not too long so you won’t trip on it.
Victoria Thomas says, “ The best
part about Halloween is getting all of the
candy.”
Zoe Thomas says, “ I like getting candy too.”
not acceptable and it is the saddest
thing students can do to each other.
I then asked her what is your favorite
sport. She answered, “soccer.”
So do I! I also asked what she likes
to do on the weekends and she said,
“I love to spend time with my family
doing many activities, such as going to
the pumpkin patch.” My final question
was what is your favorite color? She
answered purple! As I was about to
get up she said, “I really love
teaching and I’m very blessed with
such amazing students.” Her class
is in the picture to the left.
Well, I hope you have a spooky, fun, exciting,
spectacular, scary, lots of candy, and frightful
Halloween!
BOO!!!
“Student Patrol” by Taylor Smith
“What is your name?” “Who is your
teacher?
Maybe you have noticed the
fifth graders standing in the school
each morning and afternoon wearing
badges and holding folders. Who are
these people you may be thinking.
Well, they are the Jerry Ross Student
Patrollers. Their sponsor is Mrs.
Watkins.
The student patrollers work
to keep you safe. They also write
Random Acts of Kindness that are
read on the announcements. If they
see someone doing something kind
they will recognize that student, but
they can also give out violation slips.
These are slips giving to students
that are breaking the rules. I personally
think giving a violation slip will be
hard to do, but some patrollers think
differently. “I think giving out a slip
will be easy, except if its one of my
friends,” says Emily Smith. Another
thing patrollers may have to deal with
is rudeness from students, but Emily
said, “Nobody has been rude.” So
that’s good.
Anyway, who are these people’s
names? Well, here they are:
Dustin McCay, Emma White, Sydney
Young, Morgan Kostides, Keith Rich,
Meaghan Bakker, Emily Smith, Samantha
Shefts, Blake King, Amanda Rich,
Parris Ferree, Noah Clark, Scot
Ferkull, Ryan Bourrell, Jaocb Keaveney,
Jon Luna, Gracie Lynch, Samantha
Jackson, Evan Hall, Ryan Bolda,
Michael Foster, Liz Sever, Emily Wul-
cynski, Emily Bogordos, Scott Daley,
Hailey Herbert, Nick Phillips, Audrey
Gacsy, Erin Sizemore, Lauren
Bunchek, and me, Taylor Smith.
Now, how do these people
feel about Student Patrol? “I think
Student Patrol is awesome!” said
Meaghan Bakker. “I think Student
Patrol is really fun and awesome,”
says Keith Rich. I also like it.
How do you become a Student
Patroller? By showing your fourth
grade teacher that you are interested
in the job and are a reliable,
honest and responsible student. If
you are picked and you do not want
the job you can reject the position.
So, 4th graders that are interested
keep your fingers crossed!
