THE WRITINGS OF TRUTH*<br />

<strong>The</strong> seeker after Wisdom, whose Bliss is non-existence, <strong>the</strong> Devotee of <strong>the</strong><br />

Most Excellent Bhâvani,† <strong>the</strong> Wanderer in <strong>the</strong> Samsâra Câkkra, <strong>the</strong> Insect that<br />

crawls on Earth, on Seb beneath Nuit, <strong>the</strong> Purusha beyond Ishwara: He taketh<br />

up <strong>the</strong> Pen of <strong>the</strong> Ready Writer, to record those Mysterious Happenings which<br />

came unto Him in His search for Himself. And <strong>the</strong> beginning is of Spells, and<br />

of Conjurations, and of Evocations of <strong>the</strong> Evil Ones; Things Unlawful to write<br />

of, dangerous even to think of; wherefore <strong>the</strong>y are not here written. But he<br />

beginneth with his sojourning in <strong>the</strong> Isle of Lanka:‡ <strong>the</strong> time of his dwelling<br />

with Mâitrânanda Swâmi.§ Wherefore, O Bhâvani, bring Thou all unto <strong>the</strong> Proper<br />

End! To <strong>The</strong>e be Glory—OM.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 6th of August P. landed in Colombo, and on <strong>the</strong><br />

following day he went to see his old friend Frater I.A. who<br />

was now studying Buddhism with <strong>the</strong> view of becoming a<br />

Buddhist monk. On this very day he commenced, or ra<strong>the</strong>r<br />

continued his meditation practices: for we find him trying<br />

with Mâitrânanda <strong>the</strong> result of speech as a disturbing factor<br />

in Dhâranâ (meditation). <strong>The</strong> experiment was as follows:<br />

P. sat and meditated for five minutes on a white Tau (T)<br />

during which Mâitrânanda spoke six times with <strong>the</strong> object of<br />
