1170 [Fo. 82v] 14 January 1319, Lichfield. The<br />

prioress and cony. <strong>of</strong> Brewood, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Augustinian<br />

order and county <strong>of</strong> Shropshire, having obtained<br />

<strong>the</strong> right <strong>of</strong> patronage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> Tibshelf,<br />

now vacant, place <strong>the</strong> church <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bp. 's<br />

regulation and ordination in <strong>the</strong>ir letter given in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir chapter at Brewood on 12 January 1319.<br />

Considering that <strong>the</strong> said religious are clearly<br />

overwhelmed with <strong>the</strong> burden <strong>of</strong> poverty and have<br />

announced frequently that <strong>the</strong>y suffer many losses,<br />

and considering <strong>the</strong> devotion which <strong>the</strong>y have for<br />

God and for <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood, namely religion and<br />

hospitality, attending <strong>the</strong> poor and infirm and<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y devote <strong>the</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> charity <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same, in order that <strong>the</strong>y will be able <strong>to</strong> perform<br />

<strong>the</strong>se better in <strong>the</strong> future, and having made<br />

careful inquiry, <strong>the</strong> bp. grants and appropriates<br />

<strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> Tibshelf with all its privileges and<br />

appurtenances forever <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> religious women,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir successors and <strong>the</strong>ir monastery, with <strong>the</strong><br />

agreement <strong>of</strong> his chapters <strong>of</strong> Coventry and<br />

Lichfield and <strong>the</strong> agreement and assent <strong>of</strong> Edward,<br />

king 9f England, whose charter was given <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same. The bp. ordains and determines <strong>to</strong> ordain<br />

that <strong>the</strong> said religious and <strong>the</strong>ir successors will<br />

pay 20s. sterling on 29 September at Lichfield<br />

forever for <strong>the</strong> augmentation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong><br />

vicars <strong>of</strong> Lichfield church who labour day and<br />

night. The bp. reserves <strong>to</strong> himself and his<br />

successors <strong>the</strong> power <strong>to</strong> regulate a suitable<br />

vicarage in <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> Tibshelf, <strong>to</strong> which <strong>the</strong><br />

prioress and cony. will present a suitable person<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bp., his successors and <strong>to</strong> those <strong>to</strong> whom<br />

<strong>the</strong> instituting and removing <strong>of</strong> persons <strong>of</strong> this<br />

kind will pertain in <strong>the</strong> vacant see <strong>of</strong> Lichfield,<br />

now and as <strong>of</strong>ten soever as <strong>the</strong> vicarage becomes<br />

vacant, and who will support forever <strong>the</strong> burden <strong>of</strong><br />

procurations and o<strong>the</strong>r ordinary burdens pertaining<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bp., his successors or <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> archdeacons.<br />
