[5] He should have for his ease one servant or<br />

chamberlain <strong>to</strong> serve him carefully, who should<br />

have each day from <strong>the</strong> cellar one small white loaf<br />

and one loaf <strong>of</strong> second quality, with one gallon <strong>of</strong><br />

better ale from <strong>the</strong> kitchen at each canonical<br />

hour, just as <strong>the</strong> servant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> abbot is served.<br />

[6] All <strong>the</strong> aforesaid bread and ale should be<br />

given out in his room or carried <strong>to</strong> him without<br />

<strong>the</strong> monastery or elsewhere.<br />

[7] He should take nothing from <strong>the</strong> kitchen as<br />

long as he lives without <strong>the</strong> monastery with his<br />

ministers.<br />

[8] If, however, he should wish <strong>to</strong> have some <strong>of</strong><br />

his fellow bro<strong>the</strong>rs from <strong>the</strong> convent with him at<br />

table in his room, it is granted that <strong>the</strong> same<br />

bro<strong>the</strong>rs should have <strong>the</strong>ir accus<strong>to</strong>med provisions<br />

from both <strong>the</strong> cellar and <strong>the</strong> kitchen just as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

should have in <strong>the</strong> refec<strong>to</strong>ry.<br />

[9] William should have one loaf <strong>of</strong> second quality<br />

and two servants' loaves for cutting or slicing at<br />

his table anywhere, within or without <strong>the</strong><br />

monastery, at <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> Shirley or at <strong>the</strong><br />

bp. 's o<strong>the</strong>r manors should he wish <strong>to</strong> decline for<br />

<strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> comfort or change.<br />

[10] He should have both in going and in returning<br />

a suitable companion or familia, with horses and<br />

grooms from <strong>the</strong> abbot's stable, as his status<br />

requires and it is seen <strong>to</strong> be fitting.<br />
