<strong>the</strong> king, for himself and his heirs, granted that,<br />

in consideration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bp. 's laudable service as<br />

treasurer <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> king and his realm before and<br />

after he assumed <strong>the</strong> pas<strong>to</strong>ral <strong>of</strong>fice, he and his<br />

successors should have in all <strong>the</strong>ir episcopal<br />

lands <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> king's writs, pleas <strong>of</strong><br />

wi<strong>the</strong>rnaam, <strong>the</strong> chattels <strong>of</strong> felons and fugitives<br />

and <strong>the</strong> fines and amercements <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir men and<br />

tenants <strong>to</strong> be levied [<strong>by</strong>] <strong>the</strong> bp., his successors<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>of</strong>ficials for <strong>the</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same bishops without cause or impediment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

king, his heirs, sheriffs, bailiffs or <strong>of</strong>ficials.<br />

By <strong>the</strong> king's writ between <strong>the</strong> community<br />

concerning this dated 22 April 27 [Edward I]<br />

[1299] <strong>the</strong> king ordered <strong>the</strong> treasurer and barons<br />

that each clause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> charter should be observed<br />

strictly, <strong>the</strong> king's justices, sheriffs and<br />

ministers should cause it <strong>to</strong> be held and observed<br />

within <strong>the</strong> realm, and <strong>the</strong> sheriffs should cause<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir account for <strong>the</strong> pleas <strong>of</strong> wi<strong>the</strong>rnaam, <strong>the</strong><br />

chattels <strong>of</strong> felons and fugitives, and also <strong>the</strong><br />

amercements <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> men and tenants in <strong>the</strong><br />

bishopric <strong>to</strong> be made in <strong>the</strong> exchequer before <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are released <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bp. It is discharged.<br />
