Abberbur', vicar-general, sealed thirteen charters<br />

delivered <strong>to</strong> him <strong>by</strong> William de Brikhull,<br />

seneschal, containing sixteen acres and one and a<br />

half roods <strong>of</strong> land given <strong>to</strong> diverse men in<br />

exchange for lands which <strong>the</strong> bp. had from <strong>the</strong>m in<br />

his park <strong>of</strong> Beaudesert.<br />

476 6 April 1302, Lichfield. Ordination <strong>by</strong> M.<br />

Thomas de Abberbur', vicar-general, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

vicarage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> parish church <strong>of</strong> Castle<strong>to</strong>n in <strong>the</strong><br />

Peak, appropriated <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> abbot and cony. <strong>of</strong> Vale<br />

Royal who have presented William Notekyn, priest,<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> vicarage, canonically ordained <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> bp.<br />

Following an inquiry made <strong>by</strong> neighbouring rec<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

and vicars and <strong>by</strong> trustworthy men concerning <strong>the</strong><br />

true value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> portion, <strong>the</strong> revenue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

church and <strong>the</strong> charges incumbent upon <strong>the</strong> vicar<br />

and his vicarage, <strong>the</strong> vicar-general, in <strong>the</strong><br />

presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> religious and <strong>the</strong> presented,<br />

ordains as follows.<br />

[1] The religious and <strong>the</strong>ir successors should have<br />

half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house which <strong>the</strong> rec<strong>to</strong>r had, that in<br />

which <strong>the</strong> granary is situated, with <strong>the</strong> usage and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>its <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moiety.<br />

(2) The religious and <strong>the</strong>ir successors should also<br />

have <strong>the</strong> mortuary animals and <strong>the</strong> ti<strong>the</strong>s <strong>of</strong> corn<br />

<strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> parochial lands <strong>the</strong>n cultivated, <strong>of</strong> hay<br />

<strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> parishoners, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mine, <strong>of</strong> foals from<br />

<strong>the</strong> king's stud and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> king's water mill.<br />

[3] Because <strong>the</strong> vicar is bound <strong>to</strong> reside, he and<br />

his successors should have <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

rec<strong>to</strong>r's house, <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> demesne land and<br />

park <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church and, because <strong>the</strong> exercising <strong>of</strong><br />

hospitality is expensive where <strong>the</strong> church is<br />

situated, where <strong>the</strong>re are many poor wastes and<br />

woods, <strong>the</strong> vicar is <strong>to</strong> have <strong>the</strong> ti<strong>the</strong>s <strong>of</strong> lambs,<br />

wool, milk and o<strong>the</strong>r small ti<strong>the</strong>s, <strong>the</strong> revenue,<br />

oblations and proceeds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church except <strong>the</strong><br />

ti<strong>the</strong>s and revenue assigned <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> religious.<br />

[4] The religious are <strong>to</strong> serve, and cause <strong>to</strong> be<br />

served, <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> Castle<strong>to</strong>n notwithstanding<br />
