Dear Collectors,<br />
The spirit of celebration infuses this edition of the Bulletin. The<br />
issues showcase the diversity in the community we seek to reflect<br />
in new and meaningful ways through our issue programme.<br />
We start with detailed coverage of <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong>'s 2001<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n Legends issue (released 25 January). Known and<br />
loved by <strong>Australia</strong>ns young and old, Slim Dusty has spent many<br />
years celebrating our unique way of life in his songs.<br />
Our first March issue celebrates the opening of the new<br />
National Museum of <strong>Australia</strong>. The days when museums were<br />
sombre, imposing buildings are long gone, as the new Museum<br />
of Victoria and now the national museum demonstrate. The<br />
location of the national museum, on the shores of Lake Burley<br />
Griffin, combines with spectacular architecture to create an<br />
object of interest, education and wonder.<br />
Music is synonymous with celebration, and Rock <strong>Australia</strong>,<br />
also in March, celebrates iconic <strong>Australia</strong>n music. The issue<br />
follows numerous requests to continue our popular issue,<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n Rock ‘n’ Roll (June 1998). This time we feature songs<br />
by artists ranging from John Farnham to silverchair. If you<br />
haven't heard of some of these songs/artists, don't worry; neither<br />
had I until we started researching this issue.<br />
These songs/artists speak to many younger people about their<br />
experience of <strong>Australia</strong>. They will welcome this celebration of<br />
popular culture–and a significant <strong>Australia</strong>n industry–on their<br />
country’s <strong>stamp</strong>s.<br />
In April we celebrate the 75th birthday of the Queen of<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. We mark this<br />
milestone with a special sheetlet of ten <strong>stamp</strong>s that features a<br />
decorative selvedge.<br />
Our Colour My Day issue could just as easily have been called<br />
Celebration! Colour My Day includes <strong>stamp</strong>s for both domestic<br />
and international use. Initially released with title tabs, these<br />
<strong>stamp</strong>s will also be available for personalisation later in the year.<br />
In May we celebrate the centenary of the opening of Federal<br />
Parliament. To emphasise the importance of the event, we have<br />
issued two miniature sheets, one for each of the <strong>stamp</strong>s.<br />

<strong>Australia</strong> Day<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n Legends<br />
He is a bush balladeer inspired by the poetry of<br />
Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson. He is Slim<br />
Dusty, a symbol of <strong>Australia</strong>, an <strong>Australia</strong>n Legend.<br />
Born David Kirkpatrick in Kempsey, NSW,<br />
in 1927, he adopted the name Slim Dusty as a<br />
10-year-old dreaming of stardom.<br />
Slim’s first major success came with his classic<br />
‘When The Rain Tumbles Down In July’ in 1946.<br />
That hit established <strong>Australia</strong>n country music<br />
as a genre of its own, rather than an offshoot of<br />
American country. But Slim first came to national<br />
prominence with the hit recording of ‘The Pub<br />
With No Beer’ (1957). With this song he<br />
became the first <strong>Australia</strong>n to receive a gold<br />
record, and the first to have an international hit.<br />

Slim and his family toured outback and<br />
regional <strong>Australia</strong> in days when roads were often<br />
bad and communications difficult. Indeed he<br />
still tours. It is this dedication to country music<br />
fans that has made him such a popular and<br />
respected figure.<br />
Slim received an MBE, and in 1998 was<br />
awarded an AO in for his services to country<br />
music and the entertainment industry.<br />
In 1992 he helped form the Country Music<br />
Association of <strong>Australia</strong> to promote the songs<br />
of the bush and remained chairman of the<br />
Association until just recently.<br />
In 1998 Slim was named one of 100 National<br />
Living Treasures by the National Trust of <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />
In 1999 he was named Father of the Year and<br />
Senior <strong>Australia</strong>n of the Year.<br />
His selection to sing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ at the<br />
close of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games<br />
highlights his status in <strong>Australia</strong>n popular<br />
culture.<br />
Today Slim’s career has spanned six decades<br />
during which he has dominated country<br />
music in <strong>Australia</strong> and won countless music<br />
industry awards.<br />
To really understand his unprecedented level<br />
of popularity, consider this: Slim Dusty is<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>’s best-selling domestic artist. He has<br />
won more gold and platinum record awards<br />
than any other <strong>Australia</strong>n performer.<br />

About the <strong>Australia</strong>n Legends series<br />
As part of its support for <strong>Australia</strong> Day, <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong><br />
established the <strong>Australia</strong>n Legends Award. The award<br />
honours a prominent <strong>Australia</strong>n (or <strong>Australia</strong>ns) who,<br />
over a lifetime of achievement in his or her particular<br />
field of endeavour, has made an outstanding<br />
contribution to the <strong>Australia</strong>n identity and heritage.<br />
Stamps featuring the <strong>Australia</strong>n Legend(s) are released to<br />
coincide with the presentation of the award each <strong>Australia</strong> Day.<br />
The first in the series (1997) paid tribute to Sir Donald<br />
Bradman, considered the greatest cricketer ever to play<br />
the game. The 1998 award honoured six <strong>Australia</strong>n Olympic<br />
Legends: Betty Cuthbert, Herb Elliott, Dawn Fraser,<br />
Marjorie Jackson, Murray Rose and Shirley Strickland.<br />
The late artist, Arthur Boyd, received the award in 1999,<br />
and in 2000 the award went to the three remaining living<br />
Gallipoli veterans, Roy Longmore, Walter Parker and Alec<br />
Campbell. (Walter Parker has since died).<br />

The opening of the National Museum of<br />
<strong>Australia</strong> is part of the celebrations marking the<br />
centenary of federation. The museum was<br />
developed as a forum–a place for sharing stories<br />
and exchanging information about different<br />
cultures, as well as displaying rare and unique<br />
objects. The museum employs a fresh and<br />
exciting approach to <strong>Australia</strong>n history, culture<br />
and the environment. It presents its varied<br />
subject matter through the blending of exhibits,<br />
technology, media, live performances and<br />
hands-on activities.<br />
Three main themes form the museum’s<br />
intellectual framework: <strong>Australia</strong>n society and<br />
its history since 1788; the interaction of people<br />
with the environment; Aboriginal and Torres<br />
Strait Islander cultures and histories.<br />

The designer has combined details of the<br />
museum’s architectural features: the entry<br />
canopy, skylights, and an architectural site plan,<br />
with the wallaby sculpture: Pangk (1962,<br />
George, MacNaught and Joe Ngallametta, Wik<br />
people of Western Cape York Peninsula, wood,<br />
ochre, nails, and resin, 68 x 11 cm). The <strong>stamp</strong>s<br />
interweave these design elements evoking the<br />
same organic, narrative experience and antimonumental<br />
feel envisaged for the museum itself.<br />

In 1998 <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong> issued <strong>Australia</strong>n Rock<br />
‘n’ Roll, a set of twelve <strong>stamp</strong>s featuring <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
hit songs of the late 50s, the 60s and the early 70s.<br />
Rock <strong>Australia</strong> takes us from the pub rock era of<br />
the late 70s to the dance and studio music of the<br />
1990s.<br />
From hard rock to pure pop, the ten hit<br />
songs featured on the <strong>stamp</strong>s highlight the<br />
diversity of the <strong>Australia</strong>n contemporary music<br />
scene. All were great hits that found their way<br />
into the hearts of the music-loving public. Each<br />
of them said something about us, and told the<br />
rest of the world this is what popular culture<br />
sounds like, and it has an <strong>Australia</strong>n accent.<br />
‘Khe Sanh’ (1978) Cold Chisel<br />
One of the best hard rock bands in the<br />
country, Cold Chisel built their success from<br />
live performances in the heyday of pub rock.<br />
‘Khe Sanh’, their first hit from their first<br />
album became their signature song.<br />
‘Down under’ (1981) Men at Work<br />
Men at Work achieved extraordinary<br />
international success with a flippant pop style.<br />
‘Down under’ was in the charts (for 18 weeks)<br />
in 1981-82, recharted in 1983 and 1987.<br />
‘Power and the passion’ (1983) Midnight Oil<br />
A combination of outspoken politics and<br />
hard-driving rock‘n’roll won ‘The Oils’<br />
international success and a special place in<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n rock history. ‘Power and the<br />
passion’, was just one of many hits from their<br />
fourth album 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1, which<br />
stayed in the charts for more than three and a<br />
half years.<br />
‘Original sin’ (1984) INXS<br />
The band’s melding of rock, funk and<br />
modern dance rhythms in ‘Original sin’<br />
resulted in their first (of many) <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
and international hits<br />

John Farnham’s career started in the 60s and<br />
continues strong today. ‘You’re the voice’,<br />
from Whispering Jack (October 1986) was<br />
enormously successful.<br />
‘Don’t dream it’s over’ (1986) Crowded House<br />
The first album by Crowded House sold<br />
more than one million copies in America<br />
alone. ‘Don’t dream it’s over’, released as the<br />
single, won Best <strong>Australia</strong>n Song at the 1986<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n Record Industry Association<br />
awards, the first of many such accolades for<br />
the group.<br />

‘Treaty’ (1991) Yothu Yindi<br />
The band members hail from the north-eastern<br />
Arnhem Land community of Yirrkala. Their<br />
music combines rock‘n’roll music with ancient<br />
song cycles and traditional dance performances.<br />
Yothu Yindi became the first Aboriginal band<br />
to achieve a Top 40 hit in <strong>Australia</strong> with their<br />
single‘Treaty’ from the album of the same name.<br />
‘Tomorrow’ (1994) silverchair<br />
The three school mates that formed silverchair<br />
were just fifteen when their debut album,<br />
Frogstomp, and its hit single, ‘Tomorrow’,<br />
became instant international hits.<br />
‘Confide in me’ (1994) Kylie Minogue<br />
Kylie Minogue – one of <strong>Australia</strong>’s most successful<br />
pop exports–marked her arrival as the dance<br />
diva with the dance anthem ‘Confide in me’.<br />

‘Truly, madly, deeply’ (1997) Savage Garden<br />
Savage Garden spent almost a year in a home<br />
studio writing and recording. They sent more<br />
than 150 unsolicited demonstration tapes to<br />
record companies and publishers before their<br />
diligence was rewarded. Their first album<br />
entered the charts at no.1 and stayed there for<br />
nineteen weeks! ‘Truly, madly, deeply’ topped<br />
the charts in the USA as well as <strong>Australia</strong> and<br />
was certified as the most played song on<br />
American radio for 1998.<br />

2001 (45c) celebrates the ‘real’ millennium<br />
with some reference to celebrating<br />
nationhood on the centenary of federation.<br />
The design is colourful featuring abstract<br />
streamers and foil.<br />
Let’s Party (45c) takes an illustrative approach<br />
to the theme with balloons and streamers in<br />
bright colours.<br />
Smile (45c) features the popular ‘Happy Face’<br />
at the centre of an red gerbera shown against<br />
an orange and pink background.<br />
Leaps and Bounds ($1.00) sports a red<br />
kangaroo and her joey against their<br />
grasslands habitat.<br />
Bayulu Banner ($1.50) uses a reproduction of a<br />
detail from a colourful banner in synthetic<br />
polymer paint on canvas by the Aboriginal<br />

FEDERAL PARLIAMENT 1901-2001<br />
Federal Parliament 1901 - 2001 is the third<br />
and final issue in <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong>’s federation<br />
series. The issue commemorates the<br />
centenary of the first Federal Parliament of<br />
the Commonwealth of <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />
Setting the scene<br />
Following the federation of the <strong>Australia</strong>n<br />
colonies on 1 January 1901, elections were held<br />
on 29 and 30 March.<br />
The opening of the first Federal Parliament<br />
on 9 May 1901 was spectacular. The vast spaces<br />
of Melbourne’s Royal Exhibition Building,<br />
where the ceremony was held, were hung with<br />
garlands and festooned with flags. Melbourne’s<br />
Royal Exhibition Building was the only<br />
building large enough to hold the guests<br />
(variously estimated at between 12,000 and<br />
15,000). Along with parliamentarians, guests<br />
included vice-regal representatives, professors,<br />
heads of consulates, mayors, military and naval<br />
officers, bishops and the leading figures of<br />
commerce and industry. The Duke and<br />
Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King<br />
George V and Queen Mary) were the official<br />
guests.<br />
Music followed the formal opening. As the<br />
Duke was the grandson of Queen Victoria who<br />
had died only three months previously, he and<br />
many of the guests were dressed mourning.<br />
Despite this, Melbourne celebrated the historic<br />
event in grand style. The streets of the city were<br />
heavily decorated with flags and bunting.<br />

Elaborate arches were constructed at<br />
major intersections. Melbourne then<br />
celebrated with a week of festivities<br />
including sporting events, fireworks<br />
and processions.<br />
Design<br />
In contrast to the first two issues in the series,<br />
which took a historical, narrative approach the<br />
third (by Sadgrove Design Partners, Melbourne)<br />
combines narrative and symbolic elements.<br />
The two best known pictorial records of the<br />
occasion are Charles Nuttall’s painting, The<br />
opening of the first Federal Parliament, 9 May<br />
1901, and Tom Roberts’ painting, Opening of<br />
the First Parliament of the Commonwealth of<br />
<strong>Australia</strong> by HRH The Duke of Cornwall and<br />
York (Later King George V), May 9, 1901.<br />
The design juxtaposes past and present,<br />
emphasising the continuity of the parliamentary<br />
tradition. The combined images remind us that<br />
our modern parliamentary democracy is built<br />
upon the foundation of federation.<br />

The top half of this <strong>stamp</strong> reproduces Tom<br />
Roberts’ official pictorial record of the occasion.
Roberts depicts the event as it would have been<br />
observed from an imaginary vantage point in<br />
the Exhibition Building’s eastern transept.<br />
A graphic representation of Parliament<br />
House’s flagpole appears on the <strong>stamp</strong>s and<br />
associated products. This design element (silver<br />
metallic ink on the 45c <strong>stamp</strong>, gold on the $2.45<br />
<strong>stamp</strong>) links historic and modern <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />
Miniature sheets<br />
In recognition of the importance of this event<br />
<strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong> has produced two miniature<br />
sheets, one for each of the two <strong>stamp</strong>s.<br />
The <strong>stamp</strong>s are set in a wide silver or gold<br />
border (45c and $2.45 respectively) printed in<br />
metallic ink along the right and bottom sides of<br />
the miniature sheets.<br />

AAT AUSTRALIANS IN THE ANTARCTIC 1901-2001<br />
2001 will mark 100 years since the first<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n wintered in the Antarctic and the<br />
50th anniversary of the ANARE Club. This<br />
issue commemorates <strong>Australia</strong>’s history in the<br />
Antarctic over the last century.<br />
In a first for <strong>Australia</strong>n <strong>stamp</strong>s, the sheet of<br />
twenty <strong>stamp</strong>s will be printed with descriptive<br />
text on the back of each <strong>stamp</strong>. The design<br />
flows into the selvedge. The time periods and<br />

AFL Footy Stamps<br />
AFL and NRL<br />
In 2000, <strong>Australia</strong> <strong>Post</strong> in conjunction with the<br />
<strong>Australia</strong>n Football League (AFL) launched<br />
‘Footy Stamps’, which were sheets of 20<br />
personalised <strong>stamp</strong>s featuring images of the<br />
club’s AFL footballers on the tabs. The borders<br />
of the sheets were printed with a team themed<br />
design. The <strong>stamp</strong>s were available through the<br />
16 AFL clubs and proved very popular with<br />
AFL fans.<br />
In 2001 fans of both the AFL and the<br />
National Rugby League (NRL) will be able to<br />
purchase sheets of <strong>stamp</strong>s featuring the players<br />
selected by this season’s teams.<br />

Details of the NRL’s <strong>stamp</strong>s are not available at<br />
the time of printing and will be in the next issue<br />
of the Bulletin.<br />

AFL<br />
Team sheets will be available again in 2001,<br />
featuring the players selected for this season’s<br />
teams.<br />
By special arrangement with the AFL these<br />
<strong>stamp</strong>s will be available in the usual<br />
configurations from any <strong>Post</strong> outlet. If your<br />
local shop does not stock the sheets, they can<br />
order them for you. Sheets will also be available<br />
by mail order from the <strong>Australia</strong>n Philatelic<br />
Bureau and through individual clubs.<br />
Sheets of 20 x 45c <strong>Australia</strong> and Globe<br />
<strong>stamp</strong>s (Nature & Nation, May 2000) will be<br />
personalised for each of the 16 AFL clubs. The<br />
border will be decorated with club colours and<br />
the AFL and team logos. Each tab will have an<br />
image of one of 20 players*. Sheets will be<br />
priced at $26.00 per sheet and will be available<br />

In 1999 US mint undertook to release 50 (one<br />
per US state) new circulating quarters (US 25c).<br />
Five new quarters will be released each year over<br />
a ten year period. The issue schedule is in<br />
statehood order, starting with Delaware and<br />
finishing with Hawaii (in 2008). Each quarter<br />
will depict a scene from the relevant state.<br />
In a continuity programme with an international<br />
theme, the Perth Mint has undertaken to<br />
create a privy mark on its 1 oz silver<br />
Kookaburra $1.00 coin for each of the quarters<br />
in the 50 State Quarter TM program.<br />
The first coin in this series, with a privy mark<br />
for the US state of Delaware, is now available.<br />
