In this month’s
magazine there is
a letter from a local
r e s i d e n t a s k i n g
whether we might
publish details of
weddings etc as
we used to in previous years. Well, we
would be only too pleased to receive
articles about Births and Marriages and
to maintain a section of the magazine
for this purpose. However, first of all
we need the information. Whilst on the
subject of articles may I point out that our
community or village here is made up of
a nice mix of people from a wide range
of backgrounds and origins. Yet it is rare
to hear from our Greek, Cypriot, Asian or
African neighbours not to mention many
others who hail from outside this island.
Why not? What are the kids doing? Won
anything important? Any sporting or
academic successes? This is our village
magazine. We should be taking pride
in the achievements of our families and
spreading the news. Get your pens or
your laptops out. Send a few photos.
Wheelie Bins
Hadley Wood has
been selected as one
of Enfield Council’s
pilot areas for the
introduction of wheelie
bins. The bins are
likely to be introduced
although I can’t confirm a precise date at
the moment.
All detached, semi-detached and, where
space allows, terraced houses, will be
provided with three wheeled bins for:
(i) refuse, (ii) recycling (paper, cardboard,
glass bottles and jars, cans, plastic
bottles) and (iii) garden and food waste
(grass, plants, flowers, leaves, meat,
fish, fruit, vegetables, dairy, eggs, pasta,
bread, rice, noodles).
For blocks of flats, the refuse collection
system will remain the same
but communal recycling bins will be
provided and for flats above shops a
new recycling ‘sack collection’ system
will be provided.
There are two reasons why wheelie bins
are being introduced. The first is financial.
Every council is subject to a fine (Landfill
Tax) for waste that is not sent to recycling.
This increases each year and is now a
major financial burden for the Council
(and thus the Council Tax payer). By
providing these bins it is anticipated that
recycling rates will increase significantly
and the amount of waste sent to landfill
will drop dramatically.
The second reason is that a large
number of local residents have
requested wheelie bins. I know that they
are not universally popular but I have lost
count of the number of times residents
have complained about the mess caused
by broken refuse bags and asked why
we do not have wheelie bins (as they
do in neighbouring Barnet). To my mind,
there is nothing worse than grass verges
strewn with household waste - as well
as being unsightly it is also unhygienic.
Every resident will receive a letter from
the Council prior to the new system
being introduced to explain the new
The only local practice to
Friendly, Compassionate
& Caring Professionals.
system but the following responses to
commonly posed questions may also be
useful for readers.
1) Will my bins still be collected
weekly?
Yes - The current administration
is absolutely committed to weekly
collections and has categorically
ruled out moving to fortnightly
collections.
2) Will the bins have microchips in
them?
No!
3) Will there be fines for not
recycling?
No!
4) I live in a small terraced house
with a very small/no front garden.
Will I have to have these wheelie
bins?
The Council is conducting a property
survey of the Borough. Where there
are major problems alternative
arrangements will be made. Only
properties with adequate storage
will be provided with wheelie bins.
Particular attention is being paid to
terraced housing and maisonettes
and if storage space is limited
alternative services will be provided.
5) There are 1-2 people living in my
house, we don’t need large bins.
The service will be able to operate
most efficiently with a standard
sized bin. However, flexible bin sizes
will be available dependent on
family size.
6) I am old/physically disabled and
will not be able to move the bins.
Special cases will be examined on
an individual basis and if necessary
alternative arrangements (including
assisted collections) will be made.
Fully Equipped.
The Place for Puppy
Parties!
7) I already have an assisted
collection, will I still get this?
Yes
8) If my bin is full will they still take
extra rubbish/recycling in open
bags?
The new bins should be sufficient
for the average household.
However, flexible bin sizes may
be available for larger and smaller
families.
There will be special circumstances
where additional waste is
generated (such as Christmas or
family parties) and the Council will
be flexible in relation to this.
9) Do I still have to put my waste in
a black sack?
You may still put your waste in
a sack prior to putting it in your
bin, as the cleaning of the bins
will be the responsibility of the
householder.
Security Patrol
Simon Lester has written to say that
on July 1st the service providers
of our Security Patrol are changing
from Sector Guard to the Keyholding
Company (KHC). Their patrol division is
known as SafeGuard. Simon points out
that KHC are one of the leading service
providers in the country and are ranked
by the Security Industry Authority in the
top 4% of approved contractor security
companies. The patrol service will
continue with the same personnel though
the patrol vehicles will have different
livery. Increased levels of service delivery
are expected which will be overseen by a
designated manager.
Simon goes on to say that KHC is also
an independent key-holding company.
This particular service will be available
to all paid up members of the Hadley
Wood security though not as part of the
existing contract. They would hold your
house keys and alarm information and
can thus respond to intruder and fire
alarms around the clock independently
of the Patrol service. They would be
able to enter your property, carry out
security checks and if necessary
organise approved contractors such as
electricians glaziers and locksmiths.
New contact telephone numbers for the
guards and replacement of the existing
plaques will take place in early July.
Simon asks that we call Andrew Copley
at KHC on 0870 7706880 should we
have any specific instructions about the
plaques.
Barnet & District AC
(your local friendly running club)
OK, so running might not be everyone’s
cup of tea, it hurts, too boring, too
tough going up Beech Hill, too hot
in the summer, too cold in the winter,
would rather have a coffee in Paninis. It
is very easy to find an excuse not to go
for a run but there are plenty of benefits,
keeping fit and toned, weight loss, the
endorphin rush, stress relief, being able
to eat & drink as much as you like (within
reason). Many people I know have used
running to get through difficult times
such as divorce, death (not your own),
job worries, just to get out of the house!
I’m sure a lot of the world’s problems
HWN32
could be sorted if people took to the
streets, not to protest but to run.
It is also a lot easier to run with a group
rather than struggle on your own. My
own club Barnet & District AC, based
at Victoria Road, New Barnet is a
longstanding one, having its roots way
back at the end of last century. The
present club was officially formed in
January 1967, with the amalgamation
of Hampstead Harriers and New
Barnet AC. Currently the membership
totals just over 400, comprising people
of both sexes, and with an active age
range from 7 to 70 years old. This
later fact is significant, in that there is
a very active Veterans Section. The
club were the 1992 World Vets over
50yrs 10km team champions, and the
1993 National Vets over 60yrs 10 mile
team champions. The club’s young
athletes compete in track and field in
the summer through the Eastern Young
Athletes League, and opportunities are
available for competition in Open and
Championship events. In the winter the
seniors compete in both the Chingford
and Metropolitan cross-country
leagues and the young athletes battle
it out in the North West London league.
My favourite race of the year is the
feared Orion 15. It is held every March,
15 miles off road in Epping Forest
along bridle paths, muddy trails, some
lung busting hills and a few horses and

A Day in the Life of
Our Postman
It’s 9.30 am. I am standing at the top of
Crescent West relieved that the overnight
rain has stopped. Graham arrives with
his bike in a Royal Mail van. By this time
he has already been at work for three
and a half hours. He starts at 0600hrs at
the Longmore Avenue Office and spends
about three hours doing the sorting.
Then he gets a lift up to Hadley Wood
where he covers Crescent West and
East, Lancaster Avenue Newmans Way,
Musgrave Close and Covert Way. Usually
there are about six bag loads to distribute
each day. (more like eight or nine bags
at Christmas though he remembers
being on the New Barnet walk in the 80s’
when there were as many as twenty) It is
regarded as a long round but Graham
likes the area and the people.
We start to work our way down the
Crescent and between houses Graham
tells me that he started his career aged
15 years as a ‘young postman’ (a sort
of apprentice) working for three years
in Old Street. He then became a fully
fledged postman working successively
in Leytonstone, Woodford Green,
Chigwell(where he delivered for Bobby
Moore and Martin Chivers) Banbury,
Ramsgate and East Barnet finally
arriving on the Hadley Wood scene
about 16 years ago. He enjoys the job.
Any downsides? Letter boxes at the
bottom of doors and mossy garden
paths. He has no problem with dogs.
Knows them all by name anyway.
Registered mail slows him down. They
are of major importance however and
any losses are regarded very seriously
indeed by the management. A registered
mail means he has to ring the doorbell,
wait for the door to be opened and get
the card signed. If there is no one there
it means completing and leaving a card.
All takes time and adds to the three and
a half hours it will take him to get round.
He gets one day off every weekend and
a rolling day off during the week. Rain
is a problem. Keeping the letters dry
(never mind himself) can be difficult.
Biodegradeable envelopes means that
they can start degrading before he
has managed to get them through the
letterbox!
We get to the shops where he chats
up the girls at the hairdressers,
commiserates with Bob in Londis about
Liverpool’s failure to win the League,
buys a couple of chocolate bars and
we are on our way. The first sack is now
empty so he takes the next one from
the unattractive container attached to
the side of the Pillar box. His other four
bags have been distributed around
Hadley Wood at secure sites by the Post
Office van. I offer to help but he says no.
Very professional. No comments about
any of the neighbours. No complaints.
Witty. Must be a Cockney I think to
myself. ‘Where were you born Graham?
‘Whitechapel’ he says. Thought so. I
ask him how heavy the bags are. He lets
me lift one. Oh dear. I wonder how he
manages to lug that weight up and down
these streets. ‘Not too bad then’ I say,
lying through my teeth and wincing as I
lower the bag. Up and down Crescent
East and then the long march down
the one and a half miles of Lancaster
Avenue. Leaves the bike at the top. On
the way I ask him what he does in his
spare time. Snooker at the British Legion
in East Barnet (maximum break 57!).
Likes quizzes. Says he is pretty good at
them ‘Not as good as my brother though’
Especially likes general knowledge. Asks
me a few typical questions all of which I
fail to answer. I can see him adjusting his
opinion of the medical profession. Most
of all he likes running. He is a member
of the Barnet and District Athletic club
and runs regularly in their competitions.
Now in the first division the competition
is tough. ‘What about marathons’ I
ask. ‘Twenty six since 1988’ he replies
‘and over 50 half marathons’! I gape.
‘How many?’ ‘Yep’ he says ‘mostly
for cancer charities. Sometimes two a
year’. Personal best? Three hours 24
minutes! I comment that he must have
raised thousands of pounds ‘Not sure’
he says disappearing down the next
drive at speed. ‘And what about the time
you had a bit of trouble with your heart’ I
ask callously. ‘Never knew nothing about
it’ replies Graham looking a bit evasive.
He has no memory of what happened
between Saturday night and Monday
morning having collapsed during one of
his marathons. He woke up in hospital.
I press for more details but I can see
he does not really want to talk about it.
Takes pride in his fitness. We reach the
bottom of Lancaster. It is now 11.30am
and about 2 hours since we started at
the top of Crescent West. Desperate for
a coffee and not having lifted one single
letter I desert him. He still has to get back
up Lancaster and then pedal across to
Newmans and the rest before cycling the
two miles back to the office.
I return home reflecting. It is a pleasure
seeing people doing work they enjoy
and doing it well. However, listening to
him reminds me uncomfortably that a
take home pay of about £300.00 a week
underlines a disparity in incomes in the
UK which we would do well to address.
Hadley Wood’s
Nicola Walks the
Yorkshire Moors
I can remember walking with my family
in the school holidays - in Scotland, the
Lake District and Cornwall - constantly
hearing Dad’s promise ‘It’s just around
the next corner..’
Then, under my own steam, I started
getting involved in Duke of Edinburgh
expeditions - walking around Cuffley in
Hertfordshire and moving on to a Gold
Expedition in the
Bavarian Alps.
N e v e r o n e t o
shy away from a
challenge, I found
myself considering
taking on two
walking expeditions
this year for charity.
The first being
t h e M o o n w a l k
marathon and the
second being the Yorkshire Lyke Wake
Walk for Children’s Hospices. In total a
combined distance of nearly 70 miles
over some rough terrain and within two
weeks of each other!
The Playtex Moonwalk charity supports
breast cancer, with sponsorship
generating funds for research and
also to support those suffering. This
challenge entailed walking a marathon
during the night around the streets of
London. This is the second consecutive
year running that I have done this walk
and was quietly confident as we began
trudging from Hyde Park at midnight. I
thought I knew what I was in for but little
did I realise that you CAN forget how far
it is to walk 26.2 miles.
Sharing the experience of seeing the sun
rise in Battersea Park after walking the
moonlit streets of London all night with
15,000 people all dressed in bras is just
spectacular and the camaraderie can be
overwhelming. However for the last few
miles there was a niggling thought in the
back of my mind that in just two weeks
time I would have to do the same twenty
six miles and then another sixteen on top
and WITH HILLS!
A bit more training was quickly arranged
but then the Yorkshire Lyke Wake Walk
loomed! Borrowing a fellow Hadley Wood
resident’s walking poles and with words
of wisdom ringing in my ears, I found
myself on a coach up to Yorkshire along
with another seventeen people from
my work. This challenge consisted of
walking forty two miles through the night
and day without stopping! Even writing it
now, it seems an awesome task!
The walk itself is a complete crossing
of the North Yorkshire Moors along the
main East-West watershed between
Osmotherly and Ravenscar. For those
who complete it within twenty four hours
there is the chance of being eligible for
membership of the Lyke Wake Walk
club - the ladies are Witches and the
men Dirgers. There are six checkpoints
along the way and the first came along
surprisingly quickly, lulling us in to a false
sense of security! Night started to fall and
out came the headtorches. It was indeed
a totally different experience to walking
in London through the night two weeks
earlier. The trek between checkpoints
2 and 3 combined the darkness with
probably the toughest part of the walk as
we walked across bog and tried to avoid
the holes, some of which were chest
deep! It felt like a never ending stretch
as you rapidly searched for the next
tussock to stand on, with only the light
of the headtorch, whilst simultaneously
trying to move as quickly as possible to
avoid sinking!
The sun started to come up at three
am much to everyone’s pleasure which
meant that we could start to enjoy the
dramatic scenery, the beauty of the
moors. Looking back along the paths we
had walked was breathtaking.
By checkpoints 5 and 6, the aches
and pains were beginning to increase,
the blisters were taking shape and
tiredness was setting in. This is where
determination was needed.! Team spirit
and a sense of humour still remained,
with desert island discs’ questions
occupying a few more miles. On the last
stretch we focused on a mast that was
five miles away on the horizon and it has
to be said, it never felt like it was getting
any closer! The last two hundred yards
felt like a lifetime but it was all worth it to
reach the finish. It took me sixteen hours
and forty five minutes and boy, did it feel
good to take off those boots.
The sense of achievement was amazing
and the fact that we raised so much
money for Children’s Hospices made it
a fantastic experience, which I’m very
proud to say I took part in and survived!
Flats & Freeholds
If you own or are thinking of buying a flat,
I suspect that one of the questions you
would most like the answer to, is: “Can
I buy the freehold?” The answer as you
might expect, is that you can, provided
certain conditions are met. The right to
do so is contained in the first part of the
Leasehold Reform Housing and Urban
Development Act 1993. The qualifying
conditions are detailed and sometimes
convoluted. They relate to matters
such as: the building in which the flat is
situated; the flat itself; the nature of the
lease; the level of rent; and so on.
The request must be made by a group
of leaseholders who represent at least
half of the flats in the building. Given the
detailed nature of the conditions, the
sensible first step is to informally appoint
one or more flat owners in the building to
assess the chances of qualifying, before
going to the expense of appointing
professionals. At this early stage you
will need to establish that in principle
the finance to buy, including a cost fund,
is available between the participants,
even though assessing the purchase
price will still be some way off. Also, far
better where practicable, to engage the
freeholder in the discussions at an early
stage.
Once the information gathering is
complete, the principle of purchasing
established, and the professionals
appointed, the formal procedure is
started by the service of the Initial Notice
on the freeholder. Important to note at
this stage is that full preparation is key:
once the Initial Notice is served, the
procedure is running, and the nominee
purchaser will be subject to demands for
information and deadlines, default in any
of which could jeopardise the process.
Once the Initial Notice is served, the flat
owners are liable for the freeholder’s and
any intermediate landlord’s professional
fees, whether or not the process goes
through to completion.
The procedures are straightforward, and
so provided your proposal is realistic
and your preparation meticulous, you
should be successful in your application.
If it is helpful, in a future column I will
look in more detail at one or two of the
qualifying conditions.
Local MP visits St
Paul’s Pre-School
On a bright June morning the children
were very pleased to welcome two
visitors to Pre-school and immediately
persuaded them to blow bubbles, help
them put on welly boots, assist with
gardening tasks and catch balls!
They had no idea that their visitors
were our local MP David Burrowes
and Councillor Henry Lamprecht of
Southgate Green Ward. Mr Lamprecht
has a particular interest in Education.
The visitors were very relaxed with the
children (DB has six of his own!) and the
staff, and asked informed and interested
questions of our Supervisor.
They particularly admired the many
activities laid out in the hall for the
children to access with ease and also the
two outside play areas. After examining
some worms in detail they reluctantly
decided that duty called and after a
brief discussion with members of the
Management Committee re ‘government
funding’ they returned to their busy
schedules. We are most grateful to them
for taking ‘Time Out’ to visit us and hope
they will come again soon.
Assuming that we are heading for a
very dry and hot summer starting in
July, we will need to prevent the plants
and shrubs from becoming parched.
This can be done by adding good
organic matter to your borders which
will hold the moisture. This is particularly
important in light sandy and gritty soils.
If you are planting tubs and pots, add
moisture retaining gel granules which
when watered will swell into a jelly that
the plant can draw moisture from.
If there is going to be a drought you
may like to consider more tolerant
planting schemes that will thrive in dry
soil. These may include Lavender or
Santolina (cotton lavender) with silver
foliage and yellow flowers, Rock Rose,
Cistus, Brooms-Cystisus and Artemesia.
Herbaceous perennials such as Oriental
poppies, Red Hot Pokers, Montbretia,
Penstemon and a huge range of
geraniums are also quite happy in dry
soil.
Hadley Wood Primary
School. Summer fete
Pupils, staff, parents and friends of
Hadley Wood School enjoyed the annual
summer fete on Sunday 28th June. It
was a glorious English summer’s day,
after a vicious thunderstorm the previous
night, so it was a relief to worry about
shade from the sun rather than shelter
from the rain!
We were well fed by the fabulous hog
roast, as well as BBQ kebabs and
sausages, delicious cakes were sold at
the café which was run by a trusty team
of staff, and the traditional ice cream van
was in attendance. The Pimms tent was
kept extremely busy keeping everybody’s
thirsts quenched in the hot sunshine!
The FHWS committee had decided to
have a more traditional fete this year, so
there were lots of stalls for the children to
spend their money on, with a lucky dip,
knock down the cans, hook a duck and
tombola’s galore to name a few. We had
a couple of inflatables for the children to
bounce on and there was a chance to
test your football shooting skills against
our “experienced” goalies!
One of the more popular activities was
the “Stocks”, where children could throw
soaking wet sponges at their teachers or
friends. Our headteacher, Mrs Loizides,
was a great sport and took her turn,
which proved very popular with the
pupils!
Music was provided by The Orbitals,
and the afternoon finished with the raffle
Hadley Wood Primary
School Summer Fete
draw, with over twenty prizes donated by
local businesses.
The funds raised from the fete will go
towards the continued improvement of
the school’s outside areas. A very big
thank you to all the FHWS Committee
for their time and commitment to make
this such a successful event, and to all
the parents, volunteers and staff of the
school who helped throughout the day.
Dear Editor
I am wondering if the News might
consider featuring a ‘Community
Information Board’ consisting of free
space for local non-profit- making
groups, similar to the Enfield Echo’s
page. I have to declare an interest as I
am involved in an Enfield orchestra and
a writing group I would like to promote.
The information is as follows:
1.The North London Morning Orchestra
meets on Wednesdays, 10 to 12 at
the Scout Hut in the track opposite
the ‘Jolly Farmers’ pub at the bottom
of Slades Hill, Enfield. We play a wide
selection of music for enjoyment.
2.The Enfield Writers’ Workshop meets
Fridays from 8 to 10pm at Salisbury
work for sympathetic comment. A
Where is this Mystery Place?
After months of waiting for the council
to clean up this sign and an e-mail
(unanswered of course) to them about
it, I finally took the attached photograph
of the sign in Waggon Road announcing
entry to the clean and fair location of
Hadley Wood. It has been in this state
since the heavy snowfall in February, 4
months ago. If you have space to print it
in the HW News, someone at the Council
may see it and take action. I won’t hold
my breath. My wife says I should take a
mop and bucket and do it myself.
Dear Editor
A quick up-date on the Gaming
Centre question... and a request.
Firstly, all appears to be quiet regarding
any new applications for a Gaming Centre
in Barnet High Street and there has been
no appeal regarding the planning refusal
by Barnet Council last October. The
shop is still empty and no Coffee Bar (an
application which was merely a stepping
stone to a Gaming Centre we believe)
will be appearing there. There has been
no appeal regarding this refusal either.
We are keeping a watchful eye on
the premises, applications made and
appeals. It is my intention to make
my own review (conducted strictly in
adherence to RICS methods) of the
number of High Street shops that
have A1 retail classification to find out
exactly what the current percentage is.
This is potentially a very important
figure should any further applications
for change of use for 127 come
a l o n g . I ’ l l k e e p y o u p o s t e d .
Now a request...
like to receive an email from the Barnet
