“5 Iron”
This is an election year and the members will be voting for individuals who will compose the
Desert Mashie 2012/13 Board of Directors. What direction will Desert Mashie Golf Club be
heading in 2012 and 2013? The latter is one of the questions that the upcoming
Administration will have to tackle. Who will be our leaders for 2012 and 2013? This is also a
question that can only be determined by the members. However, their choices can only be
decided by you. Get involved, step up to the plate and volunteer. If you are interested in
running for any of the following positions, just call the Desert Mashie hotline 623-584-4125:
President, Vice President, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Secretary,
Correspondence Secretary, Sgt. At Arms ,Junior Golf Director, and Four (4) at
large members.
I would like to congratulate this year’s Club Champion, Don Brown, and President’s Cup
winner, Rodney Suttles. One of their prizes will be entry into the Desert Mashie 64 th Annual
Golf Tournament in March 2012.
Desert Mashie’s Halloween Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, Oct 9 at Sun City South
Golf Course. The cost of the tournament is only $35 for members and $40 for guests. You
can register via the Desert Mashie website, www.desertmashie.org or you can contact Cecil
Mosley at 623-535-5966 or email cjm5270@msn.com. Tournament information can also be
found on the website.
The Board of Directors has approved the Desert Mashie’s 64th Annual to be held at The
Arizona Golf Resort and Superstition Springs Golf Course. The dates of the tournament have
also changed. Desert Mashie will be leaving its traditional Mother’s day weekend and
changing to Friday and Saturday, March 30th & 31st, 2012. The tournament will be dedicated
to Dr. William “Bill” Dickey. The club will host a testimonial dinner and birthday party for Bill.
So, mark your calendar and plan to be part of the festivities. The tournament will be open to
the first 240 golfers. Entry blanks will be mailed out on December 28 th .
The Social Director, Carolyn Suttles, and her committee are in the planning stages for a New
Year’s party. Details to follow.

Hole—In—One POT
The club has initiated a
$500
Hole-in-One Pot.
Any paid member who gets a hole-in-one during
a Desert Mashie sponsored event will receive the
$500. If there is more than one hole-in-one during
the same event, the prize fund will be divided.
DID YOU KNOW…
In less than two hours play in the second round of the 1989 US
Open at Oak Hill Country Club, Rochester, New York, four
competitors - Doug Weaver, Mark Wiebe, Jerry Pate and Nick Price
- each holed the 167 yards 6th hole in one. The odds against four
professionals achieving such a record in a field of 156 are reckoned
at 332,000 to 1.
HEARD A GOOD ONE…. Golf Lessons
A new lady golfer was on the first tee and asked the pro to tell her what to do.
The pro told her, "See that flag on the green, you have to hit your ball as close to it as you can."
The lady took a powerful swing and ball took off, landed on the green and rolled 4 inches from the
hole.
She asked, "What do I do now"'
The pro answered, "Now you have to knock it into the hole."
The woman yelled, "Why didn't you tell me that before!"

21st Annual North/South Shootout Tournament Recap
September 23 -25, 2011
On September 24 and September 25, 2011, the ladies of Northern Area Western States Golf Association (WSGA) Golf
Clubs, specifically Arizona/Colorado, hosted the 21st Annual Women in Golf North/South Shootout Tournament. The
WSGA sanctioned two day event was held at the Starfire and StoneCreek Golf Courses and the Embassy Suites-
Phoenix was the host hotel.
Despite the angst of playing in the Arizona heat, fifty-nine (59) golfers and ten (10) non-golfers arrived with great
anticipation and excitement of renewing acquaintances, meeting new friends and playing golf.
A meet and greet reception was held on Friday, September 23, 2011 where the ladies were welcomed. Mr. Granville
Brown, newly elected WSGA President, addressed the ladies at the dinner on Friday night. He expressed his desire to
support the Women in Golf Program. During the reception, a brief history of the Shootout which began in 1990 was
read. A DVD of photos of the shootouts from 1990 to the present was prepared by Esther Wilson and given to each
participant.
Former Women in Golf Chair, Katie Catron, introduced Carolyn Suttles as the new Chair. Carolyn is a member of
Desert Mashie Golf Club, an avid golfer and looking forward to leading the ladies as their Chair. Presentations were
made by Doris Lacier, Naomi Bryson and Esther Wilson respectively to Katie Catron, Eloise McCreary and Edna
Buckley for their long and untiring years of service to Women in Golf. The Tee Divas Golf Club was recognized for
having 29 ladies in attendance.
Gwendolyn Brown, Spear Golf Club, lead a memorial tribute in honor of B.J. Homan (Sacramento Black Golf Club),
Jeannette Wiley (Tee Divas) and Caroline Parker (Desert Mashie) who passed this year. Everyone was requested to
sign a scrapbook prepared for B. J. Homan’s family.
The golfers wore their club colors on Saturday during their play at Starfire Golf Course in Scottsdale. The course was
challenging. The Southern Area ladies were leading by 32 points at the end of the round of golf. On Sunday, the
scenery at StoneCreek Golf Course was enhanced with the beauty of ladies dressed in Pink (North) and Blue (South)
shirts. Patty Boykin, Tee Diva, hit a perfect tee shot to score a HOLE-N-One on Hole #3, Par 3, 103 yards. That Hole in
One was not enough to prevent the Northern Shootout Team from winning overall low net to win the Shootout by 8
strokes.
A special thanks to committee members Carolyn Suttles, Lillian Aiken, Carol Boone, JoJo Bridgewaters, Naomi
Bryson, Rose Cotton, Gloria Douglas, Barbara Davis Hines, Gladys Lee, Cheryl Marshall, Ernie Mathis, Sharon
Stewart (Desert Mashie), Edna Buckley (SBGC), Carnell Wilson (Mile Hi Sandbaggers) and Esther Wilson (Spear).
Our volunteers were delightful, Bea Baker, Hazel Jefferies, (Desert Mashie), Lynda Donahue (Sisters on the Links)
and Saundra Pierce (Greenseeker). Shirley Dones, Tee Divas, was recognized for signing up early on the Golf
Fusion Desert Mashie Women in Golf Website. Gloria Howard, Tee Divas, won $50.00 in the drawing for
Tournament Entries before July 20th. Next year’s WIG Shootout will be held in Southern California.

CONDOLENCES
People, places and things!
Stanley Dean (Stan) Grimes passed away on Sept. 9, 2011. Stanley was the fourth of
seven children born to Otha & Cora Grimes. Stan was born on August 25, 1940 in
Phoenix, AZ. Raised in the Matthew Henson housing projects, Stan dedicated his life to
community involvement. Stan was a distinguished entrepreneur, and as a developer of
Paradise Shadows, a low-income apartment complex, he was proud of the fact that
Paradise Shadows was one of the first two government-sponsored developments in the
United States. “The idea is to give a decent place to live to working people” was one of
his favorite comments regarding Paradise Shadows. Stan was the Arizona State
Chairman for blacks for Regan-Bush ’84, and along with his wife Dorothy, were invited to the Inaugural Ball on
January 21, 1985 in Washington, D.C. Stan was an active member of the West Buckeye Neighborhood
Assn., and a founding member of the Paul Laurence Dunbar Black Alumni Assn. Stan leaves to cherish his
memory his wife Dorothy, daughters Donna Grimes & Nina Grime of San Francisco, CA, and Lynn Grimes of
Sacramento, CA., sons Darryl Plunkett (Linda) of Chicago, IL, & Stan Grimes Jr. (Abigail) of Sydney, Australia.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Grimes family during their time of sorrow.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Fresh off of a win at the WIG North/South Shoot Out at the Starfire and
Stonecreek courses where she won 1st low net in Championship flight,
our very own Carolyn Suttles ventured to Kingman, AZ on Sept. 26-28th
for a 3-day stroke play tournament in the Women's Golf Association
Tournament at Cerbat Cliffs Golf course where she captured 1st low
gross in her flight. Way to play Carolyn!
Carolyn has also been elected the new
WSGA Women in Golf Chair.
