When Cathy joined Rotary she learned a lot about International Projects and about the
Fellowship that Rotary provides. She first experienced this on July 1 st at the cook-out. Since
then she experiences that each Rotary Morning when the Morning Greeting is given and
Rotarians circulate shaking hands and giving hugs that those greetings are given from the
heart. This is a true welcome to the community of Rotary.

Past District Governor Brian Beagle presented Past
President Les Lengyel with a special certificate
recognizing Daybreak Rotary’s support of the Polio
Campaign last year.
Luci Koebel and Breanne Gruber told us about
two upcoming events. An accessory sale will be held
in February and they will also be doing their annual
Christmas Cookie decorating sale. They will let us
know when these cookies are available.
Program
Past District Governor, Brian Beagle shared his thoughts on the Polio Campaign and how important
it is that we continue this fight. He shared with us the fact that 30% of Rotarians do not support the
Foundation and that those individuals often cite affordability as a reason. He pointed out the 2 cents
will buy a dose of Vitamin A, $5.00 will buy a mosquito net and 70 cents will provide one polio vaccine.
Of even more importance is the relationship which these donations build with those countries that are
in such need. He also pointed out that our Rotary District is #1 in donations.
In the fight against Polio, our District Governor has set the goal of raising $1.1 million for the Special
Projects fund. All of this money is not ear marked for Polio as $50,000 is available to clubs for their
projects.
Brian pointed out the the Rotary Foundation ranks very high in recognition and as a result other
groups also support it. A case in point is the huge donation from the Gates Foundation. It is Rotary’s
challenge to match the $200 million donation which this foundation has made.
The challenge of eradicating Polio is much more difficult than originally though. However, progress is
being made. One of the areas still not conquered is the area along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border.

However, the fighting ing forces have agreed to “days
of tranquility” so that vaccinations can take place.
In India, the main area of concern is in the
northern provinces. There the challenges of poor
sanitation, extreme poverty, flooding ding and a rapid
birth rate make this an astronomical task.
However, this area is self-sustaining ing as the Indian
Government and Rotarians otarians work together to
tackle this challenge. This year $650 million was
expended on fighting to eradicate polio in that
region.
Historically Nigeria was the biggest challenge as tthere
was no buy-in from m either the government or
the religious leaders. However, ver, there has been a change there and the numbers of new polio cases
have reduced significantly. For the first time the there is a break in the chain of transmission and if this
trend holds every child will be inoculated by 2012 and 2013 will be an observation year.
Rotary is the conscience of the polio campaign. We need to see this through or every project Rotary
would like to undertake in the future is in jeopardy. It will have cost over $1 billion by the time we
can say “We did it!” and that’s s a lot of bumper stickers. Next time you make a ddonation
onation to the Rotary
Foundation, you can designate it for Polio if that is your choice.
Announcements
The Annual Rotary Christmas Party will be at the MH MHC C on December 15 year. We will again be bringing an unwrapped child children’s gift for the Food
Bank to distribute to a needy child child. Tickets will be $35.00 per person. Let Mike
Rushton know if you plan to attend.
