A parallel hallway, which Ahrens
calls a “mini art gallery,” draws the eye
from the living room to the kitchen/
family room.
The Beagles added a second-story
master suite, accessed from the kitchen.
“The limestone staircase, turning in
such a tight space, is so charming one
can’t wait to climb it,” Ahrens said.
The handwrought-iron railings echo
the wrought-iron tie bars in the 18-foot
cathedral ceiling in the family room.
The staircase posed a challenge because
it took three people to move Kris’
favorite piece of furniture, an early
American walnut chest of drawers, upstairs
to the master suite.
“The house was designed around
pieces of furniture,” Brent said.
But, obviously, the staircase’s tight turn wasn’t factored
in.
The dimensions of a large secretary determined the
placement of the Dutch door leading to the courtyard
from the family room.
