Significant areas of High Conservation Value forest have also been identified on private land. Much of
the privately owned High Conservation Value forest identified in the report constitutes swift parrot
breeding and foraging areas.
No areas of private land have been included in the reserve proposal. However, the cooperation of
private landholders, to manage or reserve areas of high conservation value on private land, would
compliment the proposed reserve system. This would help achieve planning guidelines for the
management of Swift parrot important breeding areas (SPIBA’s). There should also be incentives to
restore habitat trees on previously cleared land.
Collectively these areas are worthy of inclusion on the National Heritage list. This mechanism would
confirm the national significance of Wielangta.
