30 Biodiversity of Wielangta Forest Swamp peppermint (E. rodwayi). This is a relatively widespread species of poorly drained environments, usually subject to severe frosts and cold-air drainage. In Wielangta it is localised to the upper catchment of the Carlton River. This location represents an outlier on the south eastern extreme of its range. Candlebark (E. rubida). This is sparsely distributed across eastern Tasmania. The records from Wielangta represent the south eastern extreme of its range in Tasmania. Brookers gum (E. brookeriana). This is an unusual species with disjunct distribution in Tasmania, forming prominent stands within the swamp forests of King Island and the Woolnorth region in the far northwest and then occurring in localised pockets in eastern Tasmania on well drained rocky slopes. In Wielangta it is confined mostly to basalt hills in the south where it forms localised dominant stands. Snow gum (E. coccifera). Some of the most eastern occurrences of this Tasmanian endemic subalpine species occur in Wielangta. E. coccifera typically occupies the highest altitude sites of any Tasmanian eucalypt. It occurs on Wielangta Hill and Prossers Sugarloaf as well as Blue Gum Spur and Middle Peak. Southern grasstree (Xanthorrhoea australis) 31 Biodiversity of Wielangta Forest This is generally confined to northern and north east Tasmania with a sub coastal distribution, typically associated with coastal sands and other sedimentary geologies. There are three outlying populations in southern Tasmania. In Wielangta they grow on dolerite on the slopes above the Prosser River and near The Three Thumbs. Xanthorrhoea species are highly susceptible to the plant root rot pathogen - Phytophthora cinnamomi which causes widespread mortality.
