Marist College Enews
Dear Marist Family
Many would have seen the sculpture of Mary and the teenage Jesus in the reception of the Senior School. Br
Terence Heinrich (Headmaster from 1983 to 1988) asked the sculptor to create a work which went beyond
the traditional in that it would be Mary with the teenage Jesus. It’s a very beautiful and powerful work. A
leaflet is available entitled ‘Mother & Son’ and it explains the significance of the work.
See how he stands, straight limbed, healthy, strong, looking
beyond Mary, eager to face his future, to start his public life. His
love and respect for his mother is seen in the gentle right hand
on Mary’s shoulder. His left hand caries the T-square, symbolic
of his trade, but his attention and eagerness and concentration
are drawn away from his mother to the world beyond. Like any
person, he has a life to make, a destiny to fulfil. With him he will
take the love and the values built into his life by those who have
cared for him.
As for Mary? See how still she is. The time is near for Jesus, still
loving her, to look beyond him. She has done all she can, and
soon it will be time to let him go to do his Father’s work. She
recognises this in her stillness. Look at her hands – how quietly
composed they are. She does not touch Jesus. Look at the soft
and peaceful folds of her gown. She is at peace, and yet how
strong is the love she bears her son.
See how she lifts her head towards him. She looks at him with
such love – a gentle gaze, full of confidence in him, eyes open
to the truth and promise of the boy she has helped to mould.
Her mouth, too, is gentle; there is almost a smile; she approves
of what she sees.
(Mother & Son leaflet)
Together, in competition
In recent editions of Enews the focus has been on Mary as
model for Christian people. In this reflection the emphasis
is on the relationship between Mary and Jesus. This
sculpture is about us. It’s a symbol of our faith in Jesus
who was once an adolescent, like our students are or will
become. It’s a symbol of our faith in Mary who models for
us trust in God. It’s about ‘potentiality’ too: about mothers
and sons as they grow in love and understanding of
themselves and each other.
Our Year 5, 7 & 9 boys are sitting NAPLAN tests this week
in literacy and numeracy. These tests are meant to be a
measure of a schools’ overall performance in these areas. It
is also a means by which parents and boys can gauge how
they are progressing in comparison to their peers across
the nation. Well done to the boys for their cooperation
during these test sessions.
Year 8 camps are being held this week and the Year 6 camp
was held last week. These are exciting events for the boys
and I trust they will bring many benefits to the boys as
they continue to grow and develop in the years ahead.
Many thanks to Mr Rugala for his organization of the Year
8 camps and thanks as well to the Year 6 teachers and the
senior teachers who have accompanied the boys. These
opportunities can only be provided through the generous
involvement of our staff.
A survey on the recent Parent Teacher Interviews for boys
in Years 7 to 12 has been sent electronically to a sample
set of parents. Please take time to respond (only a few
minutes are required) as your views help us discern the
most effective means by which teachers can communicate
with you.
Finally, please keep Br Cletus in your prayers. Br Cletus has
recently undergone major surgery and will be in hospital
for some time. Brother is well known to many boys and
families and has long been a wonderful support and
presence to boys and staff in the College, especially in the
Junior School.
The 2012 College inter-house Cross Country titles were held on a perfect
autumn afternoon. The event was held over the iconic Mt Taylor courses,.
The 12 through 15 years contested the 4.0km course whilst the 16’s and
seniors completed the arduous 5.6 km course.
It was great to see so many boys engaged in strenuous physical activity
throughout the event and this is a tremendous reflection on the Marist
culture, the house spirit and the work ethic of the College population. This
year saw five of the eight Houses come away with age champion category
trophy winners. But by the end of the day, McMahon was announced as
overall Champion House for the second year running. The outstanding
individual performance belonged to Patrick Jackson in the 16 years, with
a time of 19.26. This fell just 6 seconds short of the College record.
Thank you must go to all staff and parents who made the day possible.
Also congratulations to the boys on their enthusiasm and sportsmanship
which helped to make the day a very enjoyable experience for everyone
involved.
Conway House
Charity Appeal 2012
As many people may know, Conway House has had The
Canberra Blind Society as its major charity organisation
for several years. The House values the contribution
that CBS continues to provide in the ACT area. The
Canberra Blind Society depends solely on the three
collection days in early May. This year, 26 Year 8 and
9 Conway boys braved the cold to collect at Woden
Plaza and Mawson Southlands shopping centres on
Thursday 3 and Friday 4 May in two hour sessions.
Last year, 2011, the boys collected just over $1,500
for the CBS. This year the boys managed to collect
$2, 417.10 which was a wonderful effort and greatly
appreciated by the Canberra Blind Society.
collected.
Gifted and Talented
Conference 2012
On Tuesday 15 May, Marist hosted the ACT Gifted and Talented Conference for
approximately two hundred students from many schools across the ACT. The
conference caters to the Gifted and Talented programs in schools by offering
university styled lectures from guest speakers on various philosophical topics
and current debates.
Julie Arliss presented a series of seminars on theoretical concerns such as
the physical and psychological perception of time, the question of what is
consciousness and the philosophy of love and relations in contemporary
society. Julie lectures at King’s College, London, and works in close association
with Oxford and Exeter Universities, and is principal examiner at Cambridge
setting questions for the Philosophy Department. Her extensive knowledge and
exquisite oratory skills provided a highly engaging and challenging discussion.
Jeffery Hodges delivered a lecture on the ideas of resilience and self-esteem
to the symposium. His talk focused on how adolescents can develop skills
required to cope with stress and adversity in this high pressured modern world.
Jeffery is a performance consultant who manages elite athletes to achieve their
goals in Queensland.
The day was an enormous success culminating in an open debate amongst the
students. All participants seemed to value the diverse content and ideology
offered, finding the intellectual experience inspiring.
Year 9 Service Day
The day started with an excellent presentation on Service by
the Radford Service Coordinator George Huitiker, followed
by Gus McManus (College Service Captain). Gus did a great
job with his presentation about Service at Marist and how
Year 9 fits into his vision for Service. After Recess each of the
Service Captains met with the Year 9’s in their House to talk
about Service involvement and to brainstorm new ideas
of how Year 9 students can get involved in Direct Service
Initiatives. Each of the eight Service Captains did really well
with their Service learning activities that they designed
and implemented. The Footsteps staff were outstanding,
and by the end of the day they had coordinated their Year 9
students into teams to produce a presentation about their
House Charity and ideas for new direct service initiatives.
My highlight for the day was watching the role plays put on
by the other Houses and it gave me an insight into what other
peoples service passions are. I hope to get more involved by
grasping any opportunities I can and do more service outside
school. I like seeing someone smile and when someone says
thank you and they mean it. “H” was and still is a great guy
and he helped make an idea a reality and made a huge
difference to a small number of peoples lives and made them
just that much better. Gus McManus used his own experience
to show how he became the Service Captain through hard
work and keeping the Marist service sprit alive. I found out all
of the opportunities for service in Year 9 and how I can partake
in more direct interaction with people who need a bit of help.
This was the part of the day where I got to know my House
Group more and we brought all our ideas on service and how
to reach out. I can do more then help at school, I can help
outside in the community.
James Agius, Year 9 Crispin
Thanks to everyone who helped prepare for the day
especially Simon Rugala, George Huitiker and the Service
Captains who gave up time to come and present. Two
Year 9 students were so inspired by the presentations that
they would like to start a sports program for students with
special needs at Malkara.
The Year 10 Christian Leadership class excelled in their
Youth Ministry role, presenting on the Marist themes of
Simplicity and Presence. In small and large groups, they
engaged the Year 8 students through personal sharing,
dramas, multimedia clips, music and creative liturgy. This
set the mood for the rest of the day which saw the Year
8 students living out the Gospel message of service to
love their neighbours. The second part of the Brothers
Together day was the Service Learning component,
led by Erica Drewsen. This involved various guest
presentations, from Gus McManus (College Service
Captain), Debbie Kensey (Operation Christmas Child),
Will Downing and Liam Highmore (Solomon Islands
Immersion participants). The boys were challenged to
discover who their ‘neighbours in need’ are and what
they can do about supporting them in practical ways.
This led them into the hands on service activity which
involved the boys working on the ‘Clackers 4 Kids’ project,
whereby each Year 8 student created a clacker for a child
in a developing nation to receive at Christmas this year.
The Year 5 students in the Junior School will also be
The CSYMA National Conference was held last
Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 May in Canberra with 190
staff and students from around Australia in attendance.
The aim of the Conference was to inform, inspire and
send teachers and students back to their schools with
a renewed energy for Youth Ministry. The keynote
speakers included Sister Hilda Scott, OSB ‘Finding
the God… who is looking for you’ Fr Ken Barker, MGL
‘Presenting the Gospel Message: 101’, Stephen Lawrence
‘The New Evangelisation’ and Fr Steve Fletcher, MGL
‘Opening our hearts to more of God’. This was followed by
a liturgy including the Sacrament of Reconciliation and
Adoration. The following day we were given a choice
of workshops to attend on various aspects of ministry
in Catholic schools such as; developing engaging
school liturgy, project web sharing, new youth ministry
resources, indigenous Youth Ministry and immersions.
The students were also treated to a variety of workshops
on using drama, music and testimony in Youth Ministry
projects. Kathy Haseler and I took away many new
ideas for Marist College Canberra, and had a great time
networking with Youth Ministers from around Australia.
From humble beginnings at St Edmunds College and
a few other Colleges in Canberra, including Marist,
CSYMA has now grown to 48 schools around Australia
and continues to draw in more each year. Marist has
Year 8 Brothers Together
working on this project and will assist with painting of
the clackers.
Student comments: Awesome! We had a great day, and
want to do it more often – how about every week? Thanks
heaps for putting this on. The Year 10’s did a great job
putting on the Youth Ministry session and I got a lot out of
it, especially the personal sharing.
We believe this day compliments the Year 8 camp week
by giving the boys some time for reflection, learning
and action in the service of others. All Year 8 students
participating in the Brothers Together day receive MATES
hours for their Service, and are encouraged to find other
ways to continue serving the community. Thank you
to all involved in the day, especially Erica Drewsen and
Luke Croker who put a lot of effort into the day. We look
forward to the second half of Year 8 participating in the
Brothers Together program on Friday this week. Look
forward to more photos in the Enews next week.
CSYMA National Conference
had a long involvement with CSYMA (beginning
with Br Greg McDonald), and has been critical in the
development and formation of many of our students
who’ve participated in the courses and Youth Ministry
teams that we’ve implemented at Marist in the CYSMA
model. It was inspiring to see our Year 12 students
presenting to everyone at the Conference about Marist
Youth Ministry; how it’s developed, the effect it has had
on our College community and what it has given them
in their faith journey. This group of students will form
part of a new ‘Core Group’ in Marist Youth Ministry, with
the task of directing and coordinating the mission of
MYM. It is exciting to see their passion and commitment
to MYM and I look forward to supporting them in this
new role.
The CSYMA conference was a truly amazing experience
for everyone involved. The conference helped to shape
a core group which will further enhance the MYM team
moving forward. This core group learnt much about how
other schools go about Youth Ministry within their schools
and in the wider community and the boys will use some of
what they have learned and put it into practice in future
youth ministry events.
The Canteen was kept very busy
and the UK Tour boys are doing a
wonderful job cooking sausages and
serving drinks and food. The club is
also selling Entertainment books and
merchandise from the canteen.
PREMIER LEAGUE
Our U16 and U18 Premier teams
played Canberra FC last weekend and
The cold weather has arrived and hockey parents frantically searched their
wardrobes for the winter hockey woollies. Round 2 saw some very pleasing
results - from both the sideline fashion and hockey perspectives!
U13 Blue
Marist 6 - Wests 2. Our first game for the season saw Jesse Absolom peak a
little early and score the goal of the season. This was a really pleasing result
given the new make-up of the team and the fact that most of the boys had only
just returned from Year 6 camp. The boys worked extremely well together and
dominated the match with some well-crafted attacks on goal. Special thanks to
Isaac for racing straight from the camp bus to the match to make sure we had
a full team.
U15/1
Marist 3 - Daramalan 1. The game was extremely close with the scores tied at nil
all at half time. However, in the second half, Marist lifted and was quickly in the
lead 3 - 0. Daramalan had a late surge but it wasn’t enough to take the lead. Goal
scorers, Alex and Jacob. A big thank you to Albert, Charlie and Toby for playing
with the team.
Mixed results again this week however, I hope you all
spoilt your Mums on Mothers Day.
At Marist on Lindwall Oval it was a sea of Pink to raise
awareness for Breast Cancer. Thank you to all those
who made the day possible from the Canteen to the
decorations that made the day special. Thank you also
to those who have donated online by visiting this page.
both teams played very well but went
and 5th on their respective ladders.
GOAL KEEPER TRAINING
Don’t forget Goal Keeper training for
any Marist goal keeper on Thursdays
between 3.30 – 5.00pm on Oval 3.
Matt Selems - President
U15/2
Marist 1 - North Canberra 1. A cold Friday night at Lyneham saw the team show
great commitment to hold their opposition to a draw. Aidan Goodwin chased
down every ball, despite an injury early in the first half. Matthew Barton was
solid in defence and was helped by some good tackling from Andrew Simpson.
With the sides still locked at one all into the second half, it took some dynamic
energy from Yuri Arnould on the forward line and a controlled shot from Stefhan
Meyer, to open the scoring. With North Canberra coming back to score a few
minutes from the final whistle, the boys had to dig deep to keep out waves of
attack from the opposition and Josh Trevor worked tirelessly in defence. All in all
a fantastic effort from the boys without substitutes to provide any relief during
the game.
U18/1
Marist 6 – Canberra Grammar 0. After losing narrowly to St.Pats (1-2) in round
1, the First XI had a handsome win over Grammar. Marist dominated right
from the beginning and the attempts on goal flowed like clockwork. It wasn’t
long before the boys opened the encounter with a goal from a short corner
(second of two) in the 6th minute from John Blake. They followed up with three
more goals to John Dufty, Sean Baker and Jeremy Hopkins. The second half was
littered by nearly double the shots on goal but yielding only 2 goals to Jamie
Hawke and again John Dufty. Grammar rarely ventured into our D with most of
the game being played in their half.
U18 Sky
Marist 3 – Daramalan 1. After a very sloppy start (including tackling our own
players) we held our game in the first half and it was nice to see we had subs
on the side line. It was a much different game in the second half with small talk
from the coach and Natural snake lollies boosting the boys’ running on the field.
Daramalan had no idea what hit them with Patrick moving to centre half and
taking it to Darra scoring our fist goal. Not long after Marlon managed to get a
sitter and scored next to the post. A short corner game Mitchell the chance to
hit the backboard and put us further ahead. Not to be out done, Darra managed
to put one in our net.
The Marist Australian Football Club would like to pass on our
condolences and deepest sympathy to the family and friends
of Brendan Dorman, who passed away this week after a long
battle with illness and who will be sorely missed by all who
knew him at the Eastlake Football Club, Marist and the AFL
Canberra communities.
Brendan was Chairman of Football at the Eastlake Football
Club, Committee member, Coach, past player and life member
of the EFC and through the EFC a great supporter and sponsor
of AFL at Marist. Through Brendan’s support there have been
and are now many ex-Marist players playing across all grades
of the EFC, including Dean Roulstone, past MAFC Player and
100+ game player at EFC, who lead the EFC Club tribute
at the weekend wearing his and Brendan’s No32 guernsey.
Brendan is an uncle to Reg Dorman(2010), Luke(2009) and Tom
Cusack(2012) and brother to Chris Dorman, MAFC member and
coach of many Marist AFL teams over past years.
Dear Marist Families,
Easter Sunday seems to have been such a
long time ago. What is easily forgotten in
the business of life though is that we are
still in the season of Easter. This time, when
we celebrate the reality of Jesus living
among us, will come to an end on Sunday
at the feast of the Ascension. The following
Sunday is an even more significant feast
in the Church. The last Sunday of this
month (the 27th) gives us the opportunity
to celebrate a very special birthday; the
birthday of the Church.
The feast of Pentecost celebrates the
coming of the Spirit to the followers of
Jesus (Act 2), after which, the disciples went out and enthusiastically proclaimed
the Good News of Jesus. These frightened disciples were transformed into bold
preachers by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is a consoling companion in our efforts to live out the values of the
Gospel. We hope that in our faith journeys we learn to listen to the voice of the
Spirit, which speaks to us from many sources. Students in Year 6 are busy preparing
for the Sacrament of Confirmation in their classes at School and with their Parish
community. As they prepare for this step in their lives we pray they will be able
to ‘hear’ the Spirit speaking in their lives. Please keep all the Year 6 boys in your
prayers as they reflect and learn about the Holy Spirit.
Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide.
Give them a spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of right judgement and courage,
the spirit of knowledge and reverence.
Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
After School Training
The supervision of children at school here requires that we have in place policies
and procedures that ensure, as best as is possible, the safety of the boys; keeping
in mind that we also wish to encourage physical activity and socialisation. Marist
College is fortunate in that it has grounds that allow all boys to kick a ball, run and
enjoy the sunshine. Our after-school sports training is also well catered for through
the grounds of the College and surrounding ovals.
All the volunteers who take after-school sports training sessions continue, in a very
real way, the supervision of students. I am sure that on these cool autumn (soon
to be cold winter) evenings their efforts are greatly appreciated. These coaching
sessions finish no later than 5pm; however, I am aware that there are occasions
where boys are not picked-up until much later. It should be realised that many
coaches feel a strong obligation to remain with the younger boys until collected
and have, on occasion, waited at school until near 6pm. While realising that the
unexpected can occur, I ask that all parents please collect boys at the time training
concludes.
A Timely Reminder Before Photos
I think a few boys have decided to use their own hair to keep themselves
warm during winter. However, may I please remind all families of the following
requirements as printed in the Marist College Canberra Junior School Parent
Handbook. Hair should be neat, tidy, above the collar, of natural colour, of even grade
and all extremes avoided.
Year 6 Camp
I take this opportunity to thank the staff who attended camp last week. Mrs Maree
Rolfe, Mrs Michele Izzard, Mrs Katherine Dickson, Mrs Gabi Nulley, Mr Laurie Hicks
and Mr Michael Lloyd all gave of their time so the boys could experience the
enjoyment and challenges of their final Junior School camp.
Peace be with you
Our Adventure to Narrabeen
We arrived at Marist early Tuesday morning, packed our bags onto the bus and we left for our
adventure to Narrabeen. Arriving in Sydney, hamburgers were waiting for us! After lunch we
launched straight into activities. Our class headed to the indoor pool for water safety activities,
followed by team building initiatives. Shower time was 4:30pm then dinner - beef stroganoff
and chocolate mousse. Night show the first night included various challenging coordination and
strength activities.
Day Two began with an early start. After breakfast we were keen to head for the morning’s activities.
We were looking forward to cruising down the Flying Fox and hitting a few bulls-eyes at Archery.
After a scrumptious lunch of Burritos, we headed for the climbing walls to Abseil down then Rock
Climb up! It was the best day (three ‘peak’ activities in one day – awesome!) By the end of the day
we were exhausted. The night show was Trivia and after supper we were keen to hit the hay.
On Thursday we were tired (and some of us a little homesick) but the warm toast and fruits
warmed our hearts and we were ready for the first of the day’s activity – the High Ropes course.
We challenged our fears and felt a great sense of achievement when completing the course. After
lunch we finally headed to the activity we were looking forward to the most; canoeing. First we
geared up with lifejackets and then came the canoes. We paddled around for two hours. It was
hard work but a lot of fun. There were a few stiff arms and sore hands but we pushed through the
pain – even though we didn’t all come first over the finish line, we were all winners. After a delicious
dinner of Roast Chicken, jelly and ice-cream, we headed to the Futsal Court for tabloid activities.
That night we fell exhausted into bed, sleeping soundly till morning light.
Our last day was spent at the beach – the water was refreshing and it felt good to have the sand
squishing between our toes. The morning went by so quickly and before we knew it, we were
having sandwiches for lunch, and then loading our bags onto the bus for our trip back home.
The trip home was relaxing, everyone was tired but happy. The camp had been awesome but it was
great to see our families again.
The Great Book Swap Challenge
The Great Book Swap Challenge is not only an easy way
to help raise funds to buy books and literacy resources
for Indigenous children living in remote communities,
but also an opportunity to make students in our school aware of
both the benefits and joy of being able to read and enjoy books.
How does it work?
All students are encouraged to donate a book they have read and
enjoyed. Ideally books should be not just an unwanted item but
a book that they think someone else would love as much as they
did. All these pre-loved books need to be brought into the library
during Week 4 (there will be a reminder in next week’s newsletter).
On the 28th and 29th May (Week 5), students can exchange a gold
coin for a ‘new’ book.
Marist Olympic Reading Challenge
This week, we are launching the Marist Olympic Reading Challenge. This is a competition
that encourages all boys to challenge themselves to read a greater amount and more
widely than they have in the past. Students will earn points for reading books, which can
be exchanged for special privileges and rewards.
The Challenge will run from 21st May to 17th August.
This challenge will only work with your help. Your son(s) will bring home an event sheet for each set of
books that they complete. Each sheet needs a parent/guardian signature to prove that they have indeed
read those books.
If your child is a struggling or reluctant reader they do not have to complete this alone. Students can read
to you or have someone read to them. The amount of pages per event are a guideline and if your son is
struggling to achieve it, we are happy to modify it to suit his needs.
A note containing further information about this challenge will be sent home this week. I look forward to
working with you in encouraging your son to develop a greater enthusiasm for reading.
